Timo Maas follows the release of ‘Articulation’, his haunting release featuring Katie Cruel with another Rockets and Ponies offering; ‘College 84’, this time featuring the eminent Rock icon, Brian Molko of Placebo. Due out on 16th of September, the release comes inclusive of a multifarious remix package featuring Riva Starr, Butch, Patrick Chardronnet and Eric Volta.

Maas’ original mix runs a highly charged and gritty current under a vocal that is rich with exemplary doses of emotion and intensity. In a distorted and dense mix that climbs throughout, Maas manages to add a deeply interesting dimension to Molko’s voice. A widespread and layered texture working to compliment it perfectly in a more electronic manner than Molko’s fans may be accustomed to.

Riva Starr delivers a warped and driving dub and remix that cement a winding bass groove under apocalyptic stabs, panned vocals and chopped guitar motifs. With the vocals in the remix drenched in reverb, they creep in and out of focus before a rueful and melodic breakdown that sinks into a guitar riff set to catch the listener off guard. Crystalline percussive flicks dance above a sufficient degree of low­end substance to satisfy a prime­time dance floor.

Butch’s offerings also come in the form of a dub and remix that add a forceful Techno element to the package. A truncated electronic riff sits behind glacial sweeps and gathering percussion that climb to a density staggering in scale. In his efforts, Butch clearly showcases his knack for accelerating intensity and snowballing a mix towards a big­room crowd.

Eric Volta’s ‘Electric Bodies’ mix injects a luscious degree of cosmic electronica into the collection. Complex and melodically varied, the mix is peppered with vocoded vocals, swung hats and synth stabs that peregrinate freely whilst remaining anchored by a sharp and accurate clap.

Patrick Chardronnet’s 'Ambient Mix' instantly establishes an ethereal texture with ambient yawns and panned sweeps dominating the mix. In an offering far more dreamy than it’s predecessors, Chardronnet utilises Molko’s vocals, a staggered kick pattern and heavily reverberated signals to develop an end­of­set quality certainly suitable to soothe listeners into a cosmic state of consciousness.

Colourful and powerful in equal measures, College 84 and its various reworks mark another stage in the ever­developing levels of experimentation put forth by the Rockets and Ponies label.

For our 16th podcast episode we introduce you to the romanian DJ and producer Michael Ius who blends classical roots with a deep passion for techno.

INTERVIEW
You took classical guitar lessons for 14 years and studied music at university – what was the decisive moment or thought that led you to dedicate yourself entirely to techno production?

All my life I performed other people’s music, whether it was classical or pop. Later I was a guitarist in multiple cover bands. In 2012, I attended a music festival in Bucharest where Luciano was playing. It was melodic techno and it was also the first time I connected with myself on a deeper level. My musical synapses suddenly opened and I instantly fell in love with synthetic sounds. Loved the lowend and the punch! I started producing electronic music in 2016, step by step, and in 2023 I found my current sound and stayed consistent with it.

You're part of the Techno Diatom collective in Bucharest – how would you describe the collective's musical vision and vibe, and what makes your approach different compared to the international scene?

Me, together with Techno Diatom, wanted to bring something different to the local techno scene on a bigger scale. We wanted to actively promote it (via social media ads) to reach more people who like techno and let them know that a “new” subgenre is now present in Bucharest through Techno Diatom. Here in Bucharest and Romania in general, most techno events are focused on Rominimal (which is really good) with slow BPM, Tech House (very commercial), and Hardcore Techno (very fast). Nothing in between.
Compared to the international scene, there’s no real comparison – we’re basically inspired by the international Deep Raw Hypnotic Techno scene, and we’re grateful for that. Western Europe’s electronic music has been going on for generations, and here in Romania we’re just starting to scratch the surface.

In classical music, you work a lot with sheet notes, but these days you probably work more with software and sounds – how has your creative process changed since switching from sheet notes to electronic music production?

Having strong music theory behind me, plus jazz harmony and colorful chords, helped me understand a lot of things faster. I used that knowledge a lot when producing melodic techno in the beginning. But when I went deeper into the real underground minimal techno sound, the theory became useless. Techno has a lot of tension, and if you stay in key, it often sounds too static or melodic. Now the only thing I really use is the octaves. If you “play” the “lead” or “stabs” in the right octave, it works. Everyone can do this by analyzing techno tracks with a frequency analyzer, hovering the mouse on the frequencies when you hear something, and you’ll see in which octave it was played.

Unmistakable are the sonic experiments of Spanish alchemist ORBE; with this fresh release on Token. ORBE’s iconically viscous textures and impactful percussion weasel their way into ‘Ascender’ for a deeper release on Kr!z’s label. Thick, brooding atmospheres drive these tracks into stories of pursuit and escape throughout its four tracks.  

A slick, pulsating low end in ‘Flashback’ stands out as a first impression for an imposing EP. Electric leads zip by for maximum psychosis; he’s known for his uncompromising dissonance and drive. A staple of the Spanish scene, ORBE bites down hard on deep and hypnotic techno to resonate through concrete warehouses. This jagged edge to club music continues through ‘W9Y’ - a more drum-forward cut with noisy transitions and breathable synthwork. Sharper stabs occupy this space as opposed to the track’s predecessor and tension is maintained with a lingering pad in the background. A meditative conclusion for the A side, ORBE quickly shifts his attention in the titletrack ‘Ascender’. Emphasizing tone and tune on the kick, the lead comes with confrontation. Rolling through shifting hats, the producer brings boiling tension through minimal arrangement and the weight of his sound design - a skillset only the most seasoned artists can claim. To close things out, ‘Break Nation’ does just that - cutting off the traditional four/four rhythm and instead presenting itself as a bass stepper. With ORBE’s classic unison packed synths, this dweller presents a whole other perspective on ‘Ascender’. A hybrid of influences and yet still destined for the techno dancefloor, this breath of fresh air serves as deep dive into the subconscious for an eyes-closed experience.

Florian Meindl's third artist album "Time Illusion" marked another big milestone in
his career. These last 12 months have seen him tour his live show, where he has
showcased his flair for live performance with some heavy equipment including his
Eurorack Modular System.
To remix Time Illusion Florian has chosen three artists that he admires for their
unique take on techno music. Lucy, responsible for the curation of the highly
respected Stroboscopic Artefacts imprint, Sigha renowned for his modular system
performances and productions on Token and Blueprint and up and coming
Netherlands duo TWR72 who have been continuing to put out fresh and gamechanging
releases on their label Float Records.
The Lucy remix spans on a whole A side with 45 rotations per minute and opens a
window in a yet unknown dimension of expanding effect drones which takes the
listener on an extraordinary trip of its own. He took the opportunity to weave the
breakbeat from the original composition into a straight-clocked rhythm while
giving the harmonic content a new unheard surreal depth. This track has got the
potential to suck the dancers minds into a strange journey and yet keep them on the
steady rhythm.
Sigha's interpretation of "Frame Of Mind" manages to be heavy and soft at the
same time with industrial noise movements and mystic synth sequences emerging
and disappearing. The beauty in this masterpiece lies in the balance between the
sweet harmonic content and the pounding beat construction, which keeps moving
and modulating until the very end.
TWR72 deliver a perfectly working and grooving DJ weapon, which is highly
playable in all sorts of situations. They perfectly manage to incorporate the key
elements from the original into their very own signature sound. The eclectic
alternation between a suspense-packed part and a pure forward going beat
section makes this tune outstanding and joyful to put on the turntable again and
again.

Appearing on ’Kish Kash’, Basement Jaxx’s third studio album, the unforgettable single was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Dance Recordings category and also reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart and number 2 on Hot Dance Club Play in the US. ‘Good Luck’ also featured as the opening theme of 2004 anime movie Appleseed, Victoria’s Secret fashion show in 2003 and 2005, and a version without lyrics was used for the opening sequence of BBC’s UEFA Euro 2004.

Real name Bülent Gürler, German producer Butch has been a formidable force within house and techno for over two decades, enchanting crowds from all across the globe with his technical performances. Highly regarded for producing compelling grooves, his releases have appeared on labels like Desolat, Cocoon, Rekids and Sei Es Drum, not to mention collaborating alongside Virginia, C. Vogt and Ricardo Villalobos (as Butric).

Receiving regular early support from Villalobos, Butch has provided three different renditions of ‘Good Luck’ and the ‘Remix’ is a rhythmic roller from the off, featuring numerous elements from the original whilst generating a cacophony of percussion as Kekaula’s iconic voice is chopped and looped – the result is high- octane and geared for the dancefloor. The ‘Dub’ strips things back, purely using segments of the vocal for instrumental purposes as a whirring bassline joins deep synths and mesmerising effects. Tying it all together, the ‘Drum Tool’ is a high-tempo percussive cut produced for peaktime DJ sets.

Following on from her critically acclaimed album ‘SoMe’ comes a trio of remixes that represent the different shades of Anja Schneider’s new Sous Music imprint. 

Butch is a long-time friend and respected colleague of Anja’s and championed ‘All I See’ from early on, begging her for a copy after seeing her play it at Street Parade. His re-work felt fated, but that didn’t mean it was easy. “I know it was a difficult one for him to do. We didn’t expect the track to be such a huge hit, so I was very interested to see what he’d do. He’s done an amazing job!” she buzzes. Butch delivers an inspired off-kilter minimal house interpretation, that’s heavy on mood without losing the spirit of her original.

Florian Meindl is a multi-talented and multi-faceted artist, who is renowned for his technical
prowess.
Producing for over fourteen years, Florian has become known for his deep, grooving powerful
techno. His productions are characterised by his love of analog, which represent his true signature
sound.
2006 saw the inception of Florian’s label FLASH Recordings. The label showcases Florian’s musical
vision, reflects his taste and gives him tracks for his DJ Mixes. A platform for artists that Florian
likes, FLASH has had over 130 releases already including tracks from Heron, Electric Rescue, Jamie
Anderson, Alignment, Hans Bouffmyhre & Avgusto.
In May 2015 Florian released his second solo album ‘Collide’ to critical acclaim. The album was
clearly influenced by Florian’s transition from producing almost entirely digitally for thirteen years
to recording mainly analog jamming sessions and editing the end results after on the computer. The
technical aspect is integral to Florian’s musical journey that he takes the listener on. His talent lies
in enabling the machines to speak and groove, to connect with them and create sounds and
patterns.
In addition to solo releases and numerous collaborations with international artists, and remixing the
likes of Hot Chip & Royksopp, Florian is busy with his sound design brand Riemann Kollektion and
Riemann Modular which is his new studio gear company specializing in Eurorack Modules.
As a DJ, live performer, studio producer and sound designer, Florian has over the years established
an impressive producing base for himself in his Berlin based Riverside Studio complex with an
exciting hardware set up including Modular Systems, an analog mixing desk as well as classic
machines like Roland 909.
After fourteen years of international performances and production, Florian has developed a special
connection with his analog equipment, letting them speak for him in music where words just aren’t
possible. His third album will be released in February 2017 in combination with a worldwide full
analog live act tour.
