You are now entering the colorful world of DJ Duck Trash. Duck is a nonbinary techno DJ based in Indianapolis, IN. They believe in the emotional healing powers of the dancefloor, so they aim to illustrate the full range of human emotion in each of their other-worldly heavy dance mixes.

Some of their favorite previous mixes include their contribution to the monolithic queer dance podcast Daisychain, an anti-capitalist mix reworking Y2K infomercials with hard techno for Chicago’s queer dance collective Rumors, and a ravey mix you can’t resist bopping your head to for Brooklyn-based Kharax [pronounced care•ax] Residency. 

Back in college, they collaboratively created the queer dance collective HedoniQue alongside talented DJs Ethan Brown (now based in Chicago) and Starka (now based in New York City) and threw a monthly dance party to raise money for mutual aid for a number of transgender support organizations. They are currently affiliated with the DIY-rave dance collective Club Plex here in Indianapolis.

To mark the 150th Truancy Volume, we are very happy to share with you a mix from one of the most distinct and interesting artists around. Over the course of several EPs, two albums and many live performances, Laurel Halo has created music which is as strikingly original and engaging as it is unbound to conventions. The jagged Liaisons Dangereuses-sampling New Beat of Out of the Ordinary, sparse-yet-infectious gqom, Hard House Banton’s classic “Sirens”, dubbed-out house stompers, various strains of experimental music and much more – all these diverse sounds are played in a manner which helps provide a glimpse into what makes Halo’s work so compelling. There is an adventurousness in taste, an expert ear for detail and talent in seeking out exciting and surprising sonic combinations and contrasts – all skilfully bound together without ever feeling forced. Ultimately, the result is something which is captivating, irresistibly fun and rich for unpicking. To accompany the mix, we discussed over email her approach to playing live, her last record and the perception and reception of her work.

Truancy Volume 150: Laurel Halo

Alright alright, here we are with another installment of Live and Direct after a few months off. Our first recording for 2020 comes from a memorable night last November when our resident Aurora Halal invited Pessimist in to share the booth. 

Aurora provided the opening (and closing) moments, which is a side of the beloved techno we are really enjoying getting to know. Known for her meticulously programmed sets that build with both patience and intensity, this opening stays true to her hypnotic style. Taking us from cinematic dub techno to pitched up club favorites and back again, it's a subterranean and psychedelic ride leading us to the surface just before Pessimist's dnb stylings took over for the night.

Aurora is back in our booth on March 28 alongside Wata Igarashi, DJ Python, Juliana Huxtable and more for Nowadays Nonstop. Tickets for that are available on Resident Advisor now.
