Resident and co-founder of one of Sheffield's best loved underground parties, Adam's usually found slinging heater tech-house and garagey styles at intimate parties across the city. Here however he delivers a supremely well put together mix of stuff from across the downtempo spectrum. This is "one for lovers of smooth grooves and shimmering seaside views. Dubbed out trip hop, bliss breakbeats, head soothing house n everything in between".

Transmissions From Space No.23 | Chapel Walk

Super duper excited to be dropping number 24 in our series from another good pal and very talented bean, the lovely Admin.

Adam should be something of a familiar name by now, as one of the leading lights of the Bristol disco/funk/rare groove scene. He's been travelling across Europe and around the UK of late, playing alongside some of the absolute best in the game, and showing off what he can do. He's also dropped a couple of stellar 7" records in the last couple of years - 'Step Into Light' and 'Halo' - which were both immediate buy on sight material, with the former receiving lofty praise from the mighty Luke Una.

We first crossed paths through our friend Jake's party 'Tzara', and had an absolute blast hanging out, chatting records, and then playing them late in to the night at the party. We then met behind the decks again at Westival with a 6hr b4b between Adam, Jake, and ourselves, and it was easily one of our highlights of the year.

This mix shows off his inimitable style, with an incredible selection of records, mixed about as smoothly as it gets. Enjoy!

Transmissions From Space No.24 | Admin

For our 25th mix we're welcoming Amsterdam based selector DJ Tracksuit, who's supplied an hour and a half of beautiful world rhythms.

We've known Tim for a few years, having linked up previously when he did a mix for our 24 hour Live For Love fundraiser livestream during lockdown. His music taste and knowledge runs seriously deep, and is a DJ we're consistently blown away by. This mix is no different, and shows off his style and versatility.

DJ Tracksuit says: "I’ve been wanting to record this mix for a while but had troubles with turntables, tonearms, needles and in general, a very busy 2022. The result is a full vinyl mix of (mostly) psychedelic and percussive grooves from some of my favourite musical countries (Guadeloupe, Cape Verde & Haiti). Starting at 75 or so BPM all the way up to well over double that in a bit less than an hour and a half. I can imagine an Apricot Ballroom party have a similar (but more stretched out) progression! Protest music, slow & fast Gwo Ka or Zouk, Compas, Carnaval music. It’s all in there, including some of my all time favourite songs. Hope you enjoy and thank you for having me Apricot Ballroomers! ❤"

Transmissions From Space no.25 | DJ Tracksuit

For No.26 of Transmissions From Space, Sheffield's own, Yarni presents an hour and a half of summer-ready soul music, with lashings of Balaeric, electronic and percussive dance music. 

Developing an authentic artistic identity is a lifetime’s work – a journey of ever-changing creation. It is within this freewheeling creative space that Benjamin Harris, AKA Yarni, has produced four albums of beautifully diverse and emotively engaging work – all charting his development from band member to producer, arranger and ensemble leader. 

Born and based in Sheffield, Yarni is a purely self-taught multi-instrumentalist. First finding his way around a family piano and picking up on the emotive songwriting of his mother’s Simon and Garfunkel records, he was later introduced to the world of Acid House via his aunt, who was a Hacienda regular. His subsequent combination of gossamer melodies with thumping rhythms soon found its way into his work as a drummer on the local scene, playing through the indie and nu-rave trends of the early to mid-2000s.

Over the last two years Yarni’s three LP’s (Boro, Pigna & Parenthesis) have earned high praise from the likes of tastemakers Luke Una, Gilles Peterson, Huey Morgan & Lauren Laverne. Jazz FM’s Deb Grant regularly featuring his work as ‘Track of the week. 

Already working on his next record and securing more dates for his unique live show, it is clear that Yarni’s artistic journey is still moving forwards at pace. And what a joy it is to hear it develop, since there will surely be many more delightfully unexpected turns to come.

Transmissions From Space No.26 | Yarni

We are delighted to have the superbly talented Kay Suzuki join us for the 27th mix in our Transmissions From Space series. He has blown us away on countless occasions and countless dancefloors over the years, from one of the best sets we've been lucky enough to host at our own party in Sheffield, to packed festival stages at the likes of We Out Here, and special selections at London's audiophile spots Brilliant Corners and the superb hi-fi party Beauty & the Beat.

Kay's ability to traverse musical boundaries within the context of a dancefloor is very special indeed. There's an underlying influence of jazz & funk that's ever present through his meandering sets, but the scope of his collection and tastes belies those expectations, and absolutely destroys any dancefloor.

This set's an exploration in to the heavier and dancier side of his tastes, but has the same raw eclecticism that makes him such a wonderful selector.

Kay Suzuki is a London-based / Japanese-born producer/DJ who runs reissue focused record label Time Capsule, which he started in 2018. He's one of the founding members of East London’s audiophile restaurant Brilliant Corners and played a major role in establishing the venue’s character & sound. Kay also got involved setting up and running the record shop Vinyl Delivery Service (London) on Columbia Road in East London in 2021.

His productions have acquired critical acclaim and support from some of the most respected DJs and taste makers including David Mancuso, Gilles Peterson, DJ Harvey, Francois Kevorkian, Theo Parrish, Laurent Garnier, Hunee and Bradley Zero to name a few.
 
As a DJ, Kay has been invited to numerous cities in Europe and Asia for the past decade as well as hosting and guesting on radio stations such as NTS, Worldwide FM, J-WAVE and many more. His sets carry the impression of an atomic collision of funk/jazz-infused energy with an electronic severity that you just can’t quite locate – a combination that has repeatedly proven irresistible on the dancefloor.

Transmissions From Space No.27 | Kay Suzuki

Whether he’s taking the roof off a club with his unique selection of deep and tough house music, enchanting a backroom with a genre-bending set of disco, Balearic, rock and hip hop or playing chillout music in a bay in Croatia, Bill Brewster is the man for all occasions.

In a former life, Bill was a punk rocker, a chef and also the co-editor of football magazine When Saturday Comes but has been a record nerd all of his life. He began DJing in the 1980s, but came into his own in the early 1990s, particularly during a two-year stint in New York running DMC’s office, where nights at the Sound Factory and hanging out with Danny Tenaglia gave him the musical grounding you can still hear in his music today. Bill was also one of the founding residents at Fabric in London, a position he held for five years. There are few still playing regularly today that have his dedication, eclecticism and encyclopaedic knowledge of music.

His parallel life is as a writer and with his long-term partner-in-crime Frank Broughton they have written four books together, including the acclaimed Last Night A DJ Saved My Life (latest edition published last July), How To DJ (Properly) and The Record Players. The pair are also behind the legendary DJhistory.com and their party, Low Life, has been running for nearly 30 years. They now spend most of their time on a dinghy moored on
the Rochdale Canal.

He has been working in the industry’s fringes for over 40 years including the running of various labels from Twisted UK and Forensic in the ’90s to Disco Sucks and Anorak in the noughties. Occasionally Bill finds time to secrete himself away in a studio to make music
or cook up edits. And when he’s not doing any of that he has a family and a dog called Mavis to tend to. He is currently working on a secret project involving badgers, GM crops and disco.

Very happy to have mix 29 out there at last, and it comes in hot from Paris based DJ Raw Queen, with a scorching hour of upbeat party sounds.

Antoine - AKA Raw Queen - is a DJ that's been on our radar for a bit now, having played parties with a few good friends who absolutely sing his praises. With a seriously good collection of obscure private Modern Soul, Gospel, Disco and House rarities, Antoine has quickly made an impression with his mixtapes landing him visits to London, Bristol, and Madrid.

Back in Paris Antoine can be seen DJing in the city at musical hotspots Fréquence and Bambino, and also runs the club night DiscoStormy where he's hosted some of our favourite DJs in the game, with previous guests including Rahaan, Amir, Mark Grusane, Zernell, and Admin.

Inspired by the legendary Prescription label and a love of smokey
basement deep house, Benedict has produced records for labels
including Surface, Freerange and Detroit’s Kolour. Benedict migrated
to Sheffield in 2020, starting a party called Machine Soul with
co-migrant Sirrey. Outside Sheffield, Benedict has recently played at
Berlin's infamous Paloma, has been a regular guest at Audioteca in
Napoli and regularly plays at Eastern Bloc Records in Manchester.

Andrew Weatherall's first official posthumous mix. The only b2b DJ Harvey ever agreed to. Six hours at Trouw. This one's special.

When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable masterclass, recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. (2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000, and if we have to clock it, so do you.)

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around rare combinations playing start-to-finish. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is a 385-minute marathon of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes: a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than any comparable point in the 21st century. 

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. Disco-dub covers of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM practically feels like an F1 car.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few full-send goals: tick off long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far.
