This past week, Floyd suggested that instead of doing a cover for Susan’s celebration of life that he, Aimee and I create an original instead. We came up with “Hilagang Bituin (North Star)”, which to me felt like a homecoming to bid a loved one goodbye, embraced by the collective grief, strength and love of those whose lives she deeply touched.

To activist, author, mother, wife, dear friend, Susan Quimpo, maraming salamat. This is for you.

It is taking many tries and different kinds of practices to process my grief and accept Ate Susan's passing. I'm not sure I'm fully there but at this morning's tribute, I was powerfully reminded how critical it is we help Ate Susan transition peacefully with love.

One of the more healing ways I sifted through my pain was helping write this love song - with genius Floyd Gonda's powerful and sweet music and wordsmithing. It was also a beautiful collaboration with friends Celia Ferrer Earnest Mangulabnan Zabala Veda Luna Zabala (and I hear Buddy Zabala himself).
