It is said that in the deepest layers of the subterranea, biology has no place... the complex mechanisms of old evolved relentlessly in ever-spiraling complexity, drawing their energy from the eternal thermal vents of the Worldcore. Mechanical beings woven within a delicate web of survival, spun into life from the sprawling hierarchical mechanism of the planet itself. In the dimly lit depths of one such level, subtle core alignment shifts spark their reaction, vents rerouting the intense heat through systems long untouched, spreading its energy across ancient precipitation tanks. Slow tendrils of steam curl upwards in the darkness, growing in intensity... feeding life into the machines of this place, setting the gears to their purpose. Lights flicker into being, and with them the metal orchids flourish, casting their alluring glow throughout the level. Life stirs in the fresh heat of the moment, the whirring of a thousand intricate mechanisms returning to life as wing films push against the air... every gear’s movement with a single purpose – to feed.EATBRAIN presents rapidly rising Ukrainian producer NICKBEE with his GEARS EP, also featuring the eerie and alluring vocals of JOANNA SYZE. With these 4 delicately balanced and keenly crafted slices of neurofunk, Nickbee displays a refined sense of structure and minimalism, whilst delivering a powerful vibe for the dance. Half of the EP drips with dystopian spirit, bristling with razor sharp edges softened in NOWHERE TO RUN and WE FIGHT by Syze’s ethereal and alien voice. The Gears EP retains a sense of tight urgency and patient precision throughout, with GEAR’s tilted syncopation providing a light-footed and paranoid pace, while TOGETHER WITH FUTURE delivers a hulking stepper that packs a weighty punch.

The forthcoming LP from The Clamps and Kosen Productions isn’t just a collection of records which the French artist has spent months perfecting. It’s also a colossal look into the soundscape which such a high-calibre artist has at their disposal. Stretching across fifteen tracks, between drum & bass and garage, The Clamps focuses around the insanity that is stretching itself across the contemporary world and how he’s helped to define this sonically through each one of his records. There’s also a host of sci-fi inspired cuts which add to the LP’s explosive themes. From the already revealed record ‘LHS 1140b’, with a name that’ll resonate for any space fans, right through to the hard-hitting throws of ‘End of an Era’, there’s a taste to suit every palette throughout every expertly composed record. 

After already setting an enviable standard with the undeniably heavyweight standards on tracks like ‘Looking for Trouble’ alongside the notorious Nuklear MC, standalone offerings such as ‘Mankind’ and ‘30a #3a-23 Happiness’ peddle an unforgettable level of engineering whilst also pushing through a cinematic backdrop. Then a range of collaborations follow in their wake, including ‘Astronauts’ alongside Impak, as well as Snotrocket for ‘Friends in the Hood’. Merikan also joins the fray with ‘Fast Way’. 

The pace is continued to be set with ‘Cattle Mutilation’, whilst Mizo and The Clamps join forces for the meticulously sequenced drums of ‘Time Pressure’. ‘Medina’ pulls you through its half-time madness whilst adding to the LP’s strident versatility, which is followed in quick succession by ‘Soul of the Abyss’ with its throbbing LFOs. The Clamps and NickBee then merge their collective talents for ‘Addicted’, with its more old-school underpinnings. ‘The First and the Last’ platforms the creeping atmospherics which characterises many pieces of The Clamps’ sonic artillery, whilst ‘End of an Era’ draws the album to a close on a cataclysmic breakdown which takes you deep into the belly of the beast. ‘End of an Era’ alludes to The Clamps’ hardcore roots, whilst paying homage to the new foundations he’s laid down through his new music and Kosen Productions.

Deep within the shifting sands lay the remains of a once great city, a monument to the hubris of those who had once thought they could conquer the indomitable forces of the planet. To hold back the everpresent encroachment of the dunes they had raised walls of great heights, built upon the sacrifice of those least fortunate among them, those condemned to work beneath the blistering heat of the land. It was through their blood that the city was built, through their blood that the fortunate lived in such an otherwise inhospitable climate. As the death of these sacrifices increased however, they bore new life elsewhere. Their blood, seeping through the cracked desert soil, awakened something long since sealed away.

Fed by their misery, the creature’s power grew beneath the dunes. For each that fell it became stronger, its hunger rising as it tasted more and more that which had been denied to it for so long. Upon the night of the sun’s peak it rose, driven by the heat that still radiated from the earth. It was a malstrom of sand, fire, and bone, an amalgamation of destruction which surged across the landscape. What little life there was in this desolate place was subsumed into its maw, becoming a part of the dynamo which swept towards the city. Its winds battered against the walls, grinding their stones to dust which only furthered the creature’s power. In minutes it had broken through, and as the city was swallowed within the vortex the DUST DEVIL reclaimed for the desert what was its own once again.

MIZO returns to EATBRAIN with the release of DUST DEVIL, a five track EP featuring collaborations with TRILO & CHASER. DOUBLE RUSH features the powerful combination of MIZO & CHASER, as well as the combination of a frantic topline and charging bass which work together to move the track forwards at a rapid pace. DUST DEVIL whips this dynamic energy into a further frenzy as its basses whirl with unrestrained fury atop a devastating drumbeat. While the gradual approach of HORIZON grows to become a steady lock-step rhythm that soars with effortless aptitude over its arpeggiated bassline, MIZO & TRILO’s ARTIFICIAL NOISE takes a different approach as it leaps into the musical melee, bolstered by the power of its roaring synths.The second collaboration with CHASER, CONTACTLESS, closes the EP, its desolate soundscape quickly transformed into a tech filled groove that rides upon its rolling sub and the strange shiftings of its tonal topline synths. Backed by the powerful Eatbrain platform, DUST DEVIL is sure to soar across the sonic landscape for quite some time.
