her new album “Lullaby for a Stranger” was born. 

The album is inspired by a true story of a journey, one that took place 70 years ago when a pregnant woman made a solo drive from Minnesota to Oregon to deliver her unborn daughter and give her up for adoption. That baby grew up never knowing her mother, and 30 years later gave birth to her own daughter.  And as generational trauma is often a circle without completion, that mother then left her own daughter when she was just 6 months old. That child was Jamie Stillway. 

In “Lullaby for a Stranger”, Stillway’s most haunting and personal album to date, Jamie writes a letter in sound that chronicles her grandmother’s journey as she imagines it might have been. These are songs of grief, loss, contemplation, and ultimately, beauty. They speak not only to the two women who became her strangers, but also to others who have made the decision to part with a child, and those left behind to grieve in silence. If you have a beating heart, prepare yourself. “Lullaby for a Stranger” will touch anything you have lost and loved. 

For this album, Stillway exclusively used a custom archtop guitar built by Maegen Wells of Forestville, CA. It was recorded and texturized by Dan Phelps at Wreck Room Studios on Bainbridge Island and mastered by Rachel Field of Resonant Mastering of Seattle. All songs written by Jamie Stillway (BMI). The album will be released digitally and on vinyl on November 11th, 2022 on Portland’s Fluff and Gravy records.

Episode #2: This episode of the Future of What focuses on sync licensing, which is the process by which music is sync'd to picture, as is the case in advertising, movie trailers, etc. Justin Ringle of the band Horse Feathers sits in the studio with Portia this time around, and they talk about his recent tour(s) and the series of sync/placements that he had with the California Dairy Board. Rounding out the hour, Portia speaks with Matt FX about what its like to secure music for an of-the-moment show like "Broad City", and Carianne Marshall(of SONGS Music Publishing)explains the importance of sync licenses to an artists' career. Sohrab Nafici (Director, Music/legal at Warner Bros.) caps the episode off with his insight into the historical and current trends within the sync business.

Heroes Waking Up, Anna Tivel’s third full-length album, is the result of a year spent living and writing in a friend’s garage and on the road. The eleven song recording winds through a dusky darkness of hopeful strangers, shadowed struggle, quiet love, and flying dreams. Produced by guitar magician Austin Nevins (Josh Ritter, The Mountain Goats, Anais Mitchell, Aoife O’Donovan), Tivel’s faded-photographic songwriting swell above a soundscape carefully crafted by Nevins on guitar, lap steel, banjo, and pump organ. He is joined by Sam Howard (Ruth Moody) on bass, Ian Krist (Blind Pilot) on vibraphone, Robin Macmillan on percussion, Tivel on violin and octave violin, and Jeffrey Martin and Moorea Masa singing harmonies. The final effect is a sweeping, dream-like exploration of Tivel’s raw imagery and powerful storytelling.
