Gone Gold is the second album from Herrmann Kristoffersen, aka Daniel Herrmann (Flug 8) and Kristina Kristoffersen. Mastered by Jörn Elling Wuttke (The Primitive Painter) it is inspired by the world of gaming and the idea of composing an imaginary soundtrack for the classic racing video game Need for Speed, but in their unique style - kosmische techno, ambient soundscapes and gauzy electronica. 

Creating an imaginary soundtrack for a game and working apart due to Covid-imposed travel restrictions (Daniel in their house in the Taunus woods outside Frankfurt, Kristina in a summerhouse in northern Denmark), it was logical that the couple would use the shortcuts from the gamers’ world to communicate with each other.

Every title represents an aspect of that, providing an insight into how to interpret the song, creating your own online gaming world while listening. From the early-Autechre/AI machine-funk stylings of 1LC (One Life Clear: playing through a video game from start to finish without ever losing a life) and the soulful, space-age techno of Mud (Multi-User Dungeon: a multiplayer real-time virtual world, usually text-based) to the euphoric shoegaze-IDM of 4X (an abbreviation of Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate - a subgenre of strategy-based computer and board games) and the stately, dubbed-out closer Season (a season pass is a form of video game monetisation in which consumers purchase a discounted package for current and future downloadable content).

The term “Gone Gold” (the album’s exceptional title track) comes from the term “gold master”, which is a version of the game that the publisher has determined is good enough to be shipped to stores. (Back then, recordable CDs were manufactured with gold film.) 

However, the album is not just a salute to the gaming industry, Gone Gold also represents an awareness of how it is a growing influence in our lives - for good and bad - especially in these Covid times. 

“The computer has taken over from the television,” explains Kristina, who used to work as a composer for Nintendo. "The escape into the gaming world is an open invitation to let out all the worry and problematic things in life. Millions of children and grown-ups are online communicating all over the world with each other every second of the day. That is pretty wild. I could never have imagined that back in the Nineties when I was playing with my Gameboy."

Acid Pauli’s foray into the world of modular synthesis in his music making resulted in one of last year's most intriguing albums - MOD. His third full-length released on his own Ouïe label, Martin Gretschmann’s modular systems allowed him to traverse new territories in his creative process. A year later, we are treated to four new interpretations of some of the album’s highlights via friends and family from the Berlin underground. 

JakoJako is a techno artist who primarily per- forms live and uses modular synthesis extensi- vely in her music. Her rework of Quantize Hell takes the original into even further directions - an intricate, organic, exploration of modular interplay. 

Hamburg based DJ and producer Nutia, shares a wonderful reinterpretation of Intellijel Bell - a heavy slo-mo vibe that connects airy sounds and a thick bottom end. 

No Kick, No Cry is overhauled by Frankfurt- based artist Daniel 'Flug 8' Herrmann, who delivers a textured, dreamy soundscape to lose yourself in. 

Bar 25 legend Pilocka Krach is responsible for the remix of Sublime Frequencies of Cairo - her trippy, heavy rework is a real treat for those who like their sounds pitched down and psychedelic.

In February of this year photographer and producer Daniel Herrmann and his partner, singer-songwriter Kristina Kristofferson, released their first collaborative outing on our cassette offshoot Bytes. The album was a beautiful collection of long, meditative and atmospheric soundscapes made during a winter spent at one of their homes in the Taunus forest, on the outskirts of Frankfurt. 

Individually they've both had their fair share of musical accolades; Daniel as Flug 8, who has been a regular on Ransom Note Records for the last few years, and Kristina as Mono Girl, who formerly composed music for Nintendo.

Stimulated by an introduction from a friend to Börft Records, the pair have created a mix in homage to the Swedish label, recorded in their woodland home...

The noise echoed between the walls of the old metal framework, it bounced and reverberated inside what was now little more than an empty shell. In the old space ship he sat watching the stars in the night sky - they glittered and glistened against a backdrop of pristine, dense black. He wondered what it might be like out there - in the open expanse, beyond the confines of gravity, where time stood still. This was everything. 

Flug 8 is set to re-release an old track of his digitally which was met with much acclaim and praise in previous years. The EP features collaborations with Acid Pauli and is now available on his label, Kerosene.

PREMIERE: Flug 8 - Liebeslied [Kerosene]

Closely trailing last year’s Space Techno EP, and his recent outing as Herrmman/Kristoffersen, Daniel Herrmann’s new album; Electric Field sees the return of Ransom Note’s favourite aviation enthusiast, Flug 8. If the upbeat, driving Space Techno acted as the lift-off, Electric Field sees Daniel remove his hand from the throttle, pull the shuttle into low earth orbit, sound tracking the cosmos as he watches from his porthole. 

We know there’s no sound in space, but if there was, we think it’d sound something like this.

Setting the tone for what’s to come, the album kicks off with Night Effect. Grainy drones and swirling soundscapes lay the basis for the track. Hard-panned, delayed melodies and restless low frequency percussion ricochet off of each other as they slowly intertwine and settle, making peace with their newfound trajectory. Next up is Arc to Time where morphing, guitar-like plucks cascade around the listener’s perspective, jostling for the limelight like some sort of intergalactic wind-chime, while lush pads and chords evolve to fill the background from the outside in.

The epic Continuous Wave sounds like it was composed for the big screen. The meandering lead wouldn’t sound out of place on Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar soundtrack, all the while whirring leads sound like Herrmann might have actually sampled them from an astronaut’s respiratory system. Bubble Cell, characterised by generous servings of analog tape hiss, fizzes over the top of slow churning synth swells, placing you at the forefront of an otherworldly environment. Inhabiting some distant molten planet, he somehow finds tranquillity within the chaos.

On the flip, Herrmanns’s Effective height pokes its head into unknown territories, as a ceaseless lead transmits repeatedly searching for a reply, only to be consumed by the vastness of space, becoming lost beneath sombre drones. Pulsing synth percussion lays a foundation for Polarizing as warped, hardly distinguishable vocodered vocals give way to overdriven, plucked synths sustained by lush, never- ending reverbs.

Driven by a jittering lead and soaring synth plucks, Side Band is the only track to feature anything remotely close to a conventional breakdown - as the track explodes into a crescendo, we hear distant, saturated, guitar-like licks far off. Closing out the project is Cosmic Noise, which as its name suggests is unsurprisingly the most experimental track on the album. Surges of noise and distortion serve up a stark reminder of our place in the universe as it chews you up and spits you out

Sitting on the floor of his living room with a complete arsenal of vintage analog synths, Daniel builds each layer of his unique soundscapes, one continuous take at a time. With Alter Ego’s Jörn Elling Wuttke lending a helping hand on mixing duties, Electric Field might just be Flug 8’s most accomplished work yet.
