Having spent the first half of 2013 working on two site-specific installations; UnThread in Southend, and After the Flood as part of Hebden Bridge Arts Festival, Isnaj Dui (aka Katie English) presents the follow up to 2012’s ambitious year-long Duodecim project.  Euplexia, Isnaj Dui’s most recent studio album, sees a return to the raw, edgy sound prevalent in earlier works, yet combines this with the maturity of composition which English has refined over the years.

With Euplexia, Isnaj Dui has drawn on aspects of her installation work and the journal-like nature of Duodecim to combine field recording and sampling alongside her trademark concert and bass flutes and dulcimer.  Using coil pickups, dictaphones and other electronics to build unstable textures and throbbing basslines, English has created a soundscape that is at once serene and grating.  Whilst the trademark schizophrenic nature of tracks is in check, this album also sees a move towards more dissonant harmonic structures and high frequency playing on the flutes.  The CD comes packaged in a hand-printed sleeve.

Ian Hawgood and James Murray began Slow Reels in 2018 from studios in London and Warsaw. The early work involved exchanging heavily modulated long-form textures, recorded on a variety of instruments, notably vintage synths. Reiterative digital manipulations and successive destructive passes through an end-of-life reel-to-reel tape setup resulted in a collection of entirely unrepeatable drone suites.

Their debut Farewell Islands for Morr Music was met with widespread critical acclaim. Sustain, presented now by Fluid Audio, extends the force of this uncompromising aesthetic further, as the artists’ shared medium further degenerates into overwhelming, full-frequency emotion.

The universe would like some stillness. In the insanity created by us, we try to find some peace and quiet. But even that has been commoditised and sold as yet another refuge from this all. The focus on our mental health has brought with it another pathway of escape. But when you run, you find yourself again, with all your demons. Wherever you may sit in silence - there you are. Perhaps some music will unhinge those thoughts and carry you throughout this session. It's time for self-reflection and repose. I have recited many words on this entrancing topic. Five years ago, I even shared guidance on meditation and on music. Can music be a tool to help you breathe? I think so. Yes. And here's one example of such wonder. "‘Demain, dès l’aube’ is a quietly powerful collaboration between From Overseas and zakè with a beautiful stillness at its center. It is meditation music that secures a clear pathway to intimate contemplation." And now is a good time to sit and to breathe. Some music reminds me of breathing: a cyclical motion that sustains our lives yet goes somehow unnoticed (until it's too late)... This is why, during meditation, it is important to bring your attention to the steady flow of your breath... This is why, during these turbulent times, I remind myself to focus on the steady flow of this beautiful music... Don't let this one go unnoticed...

It was a rainy day in October when the mail man knocked on Max Würden's door. He had ordered an album from El Muelle Records in Malaga, Spain, but when he opened the package it didn't contain only PEPO GALAN's album STRANDED, he found a bunch of CDs in there, published by the same label. What a pleasant surprise, and it turned out to be a true cultural survival kit just in time for the following grey weekend full of rain. Having never actually met in person they came to realize that they already followed each others musical projects online for years, a vivid exchange ensued peaking with a question if they shouldn't work together on an album. 30 minutes later Pepo had sent his first idea, and Max started working on it right away. Musically the two artists had found each other. They immersed themselves so deep into the tracks that at the end neither one of them was able to tell who exactly contributed which sounds to their album ALL OF A SUDDEN. 

They also found commonalities in their work processes. Both like to incorporate cassette tapes (like Max's album RETOUR, Kompakt 2016), and they also like to experiment with guitars...  more
