The second installment in Darwin’s curated mixes for Rhythmic Culture comes from UK duo Dual Monitor. Their boundary-pushing productions have earned them the moniker “The UK Genre Alchemists” from Rinse FM. This open-format approach to music carries through to their vibrant, kaleidoscopic DJ sets—no two ever the same. The duo deftly weaves together twisted, low-slung UK bass, skittering IDM, dancefloor-shaking tech-bow, and zoned-out dub and jungle.

Jake Hodge sent me a track they made "Step Pattern" because he was so blown away by the production and said "You need to sign this," and I did instantly not even listening to it a second time! Fliss and Zebb are hands down some of the most talented up-and-coming producers I’ve come across in a while. The speed at which they’re cranking out tunes and dubs, and the range in their sound, is unreal. On top of that, they’re two of the loveliest people to hang with. So happy to have them as part of the SPE:C family."

For their debut EP on Tectonic, Beatrice M. drops four deep, dubby cuts bringing weighted bass energy together with techno sensibilities and advanced percussive manoeuvers. Elegant but powerful tracks built for sound systems and curious ears!

Midnight Swim is an ode to the “softer” club sounds, repetitive aquatic grooves that remind Beatrice of their go-to sport: swimming. No phones, just back and forth in the cold water, settling into a mechanical groove. The opening track, Oval, carries its title from the appreciation of soft edges, little distortion, minimal rhythmic pattern.

Upon hearing Pinch’s tune 136 Trek, (itself a nod to Zinc’s 138 Trek), Beatrice decided to name a tune 132 Trek, to continue the lineage of their musical heritage. The tune was already called Trek because it was made after spending some months in London, and realising “everything is a bloody trek”!! 

The EP’s title track is about warm-up music and enjoying the earlier hours of the party - a quick immersion and then time for bed, rather than banging club tracks all night long. Beatrice likes to show up early at the club, watch it fill and then leave as it packs out. Midnight Swim is a dip into a roller. 

The last tune of the EP features Sub Basics, the first artist to have a vinyl release on Beatrice’s own label, Bait, and one of their biggest musical inspirations. Sub Basics’ immersive progressive sounds fit simultaneously in the deep techno world and the dubstep world. A beautiful in-between.

MR010 spins what we’ve perceived as noRecall’s continued electronic ode to grime and hip hop. Islay begins with a truly blended lead-out piece called Grid Failure. The track evolves around punchy grime drums and sonic swing, creating an environment where function meets form and form meets function. The project moves forward with Inhalation’s commanding choral intro, a rather fitting lead that both juxtaposes and highlights sub-smashing frequencies. Inhalation’s stepping patterns take us through multiple switch-ups and variations, a common denominator for this ever-morphing EP.

Moving to the third track, listeners are met with hybrid dancehall that is somehow (and rather spectacularly) entangled with nostalgic 8-bit crush. Islay’s (this time the track, not the EP) introduction serves as a crowd breather before the ensuing onslaught of patterning and low-end weight. It’s clear how much time went into its composition… a labor of love that offers many class ear catching elements.

And now, to guess which direction the remix would take would’ve been futile! All we knew was that whatever came next was at the mercy of Maude Vôs… and wowie, what a delivery. Maude Vos’ remix depicts something expertly large and immersive, something that requires much more than the dBs produced by my little Renault Clio. This track feels like an audio depiction of the rain cycle, with sonics heated into the atmosphere only to fall back over your head. A fitting curtain call for this project.

"I was born in Oakland and raised in Alameda. I play almost exclusively in the Bay Area underground rave scene. My favorite places to play are basements, forests, and of course warehouses. I've been a raver since I was fifteen. Sometimes I produce. The release I'm most proud of is an ep I put out in 2023 featuring a collaboration with my friend Daria. The party that you're most likely to see me DJ at is anything thrown by No Bias.

This mix goes from languishing in slow, negative space to frenzied sensory seeking. Lately I’ve been devoted to harder styles of all tempos. Doomcore is a genre that I’d really like to see have a moment in the Bay Area underground. I was hooked ever since I listened to Nkisi’s mix for Crack Magazine. I’m hoping if I play enough of it, it’ll sink its claws into other listeners. This genre looms, darkens, and threatens impact while intermittently drawing back and giving you time to wallow. Artists Fifth Era and Doom HK make multiple appearances. While austere, Doomcore still has some bounce and sexiness to it. From there, I blend in faster old-school hard techno and gabber, moving up to a sprinting pace. Lately it’s hard to enjoy anything less than 15 years old, and I think that shows in this mix."
