Our next podcast comes from London based Dan Shake, who has become the very first producer without a Detroit heritage or residency to land a release on Moodymann's prestigious record label, Mahogani Music. Having just watched Kenny Dixon Jr. perform as part of the 3 Chairs at Dimensions Festival, Dan handed over a demo CD with a collection of unreleased tracks. Moodymann was hooked from the offset, taking the first plunge on welcoming an outsider into his tight-knit crew of Detroit strong artists.

Our next podcast comes from 2020 Vision Label Boss, Ralph Lawson. We're releasing this exclusive prior to 2020’s Content World Tour arriving in Leeds on the 29th March featuring Greg Wilson, Crazy P and Ralph. This tour celebrates 20 years of 2020 Vision and the release of “Content”. 

We had Ralph play at Mint Warehouse early last year, and he showed everyone why he’s played a pioneering role in electronic underground dance music for the past two decades. His 2020 Vision Recordings have created a vibrant trail of releases, making it one of the best-loved and most respected imprints in the industry. First Play: Fernando – Mid Decade [Futureboogie]

After two solid EPs out on Exploited Ghetto last year, Florence-native Mennie is back with ‘Reels Rebel’. The EP consists of two tidy house cuts, and for you today we present the first track on the release, ‘Reels Rebel’. 

Mennie’s approach to producing the music involved a classic aesthetic, drawing upon vintage machines to build up his grooves. From the track structure to the way samples have been worked, you most certainly get this classic tech-house feel. There’s this vintage sheen to ‘Reels Rebel’ that reeks of class, achieved through a most capable handling of percussion and an addictive riff on the loop. A rare breath of quality in a sea of generic four-to-the-floor.

First Play: Mennie - Reels Rebel [Exploited Ghetto]

For the latest release on Rob da Bank’s dance focussed imprint Silver Bear Recordings, longtime collaborators Krywald & Farrer have turned in a three track EP. The Percolate residents are well respected across London for their exemplary skills behind the decks, and the wonderfully titled ‘Top Pocket Persies’ EP is evidence their talent also extends to the studio. Today we premiere the lead track, ‘Spoon Billed Sandpiper’.

‘Spoon Billed Sandpiper’ is testament to the duo’s keen understanding of songwriting. The song begins with a meditative drum pattern, which grows more propulsive as pads begin to swirl around it. An early breakdown is accompanied by a heart torn vocal sample before the beat comes back in, sounding even more frenetic to ensure to send the floor into raptures.

First Play: Krywald & Farrer - Spoon Billed Sandpiper [Silver Bear Recordings]

For our latest Flux First Play we introduce 22 year old Frenchman Leon Revol, who has kindly allowed us to premiere a song from his new EP for Ben Gomori's Monologues Records, ‘Eulogy For Hip-Hop’. 

‘Eulogy For Hip-Hop’ samples a Donna Summer song, and the title may be a nod to the prolific use of the sample in modern hip-hop, notably in Beyonce’s ‘Naughty Girl’. The sample drifts above bleached pianos and sunkissed strings, undercut by sharp chugging percussion, painting a sepia-toned picture of a summer evening in warmer climes.

First Play: Leon Revol - Eulogy For Hip Hop [Monologues Records]

Our latest First Play is a new track from Crazylegs and Local Talk alumni, Tommy Rawson. The aptly titled ‘Piano Pleasure’ is Rawson’s contribution to a new four track EP on Red Rack’em’s label, Smugglers Inn.

Rawson uses afrobeat-inspired percussion as the foundation for the track, while filtered vocals drift atop the beat and pianos glisten in the distance like a mirage on an oppressively hot day. In the latter half of the piece, a muted acid line provides weight underneath, adding a late night suitability to the production.

First Play: Tommy Rawson - Piano Pleasure [Smugglers Inn]

We’re fortunate to have the first play of “Before The Rain”, taken from Mius’ forthcoming album on the mighty Sonar Kollektiv. Although this is Mius’ third long player in as many years, it will be the first appearance that the Hungarian artist has made on the label.

The album itself features appearances from many live musicians, and with “before the Rain” we are treated to the bass playing of Tamas Mezey. The track spans just short of seven minutes and is full to the brim with melody and emotion, finishing in a crescendo of erratic percussion and synths.

First Play: Mius - Before The Rain [Sonar Kollektiv]

For the third release on Astropical Tapes, the Polish label have invited various artists to contribute to the ‘Interstellar Funk’ EP. Among them are Marcin Krupa and Astro Buhloone, who contributed the past two releases on the label, alongside a host of new talent. 

One of these new artists is Easy Audio, whose effort ‘Gypsy Funk’ we premiere today. ‘Gypsy Funk’ uses snatches of vocals and a 2-step drum pattern to create a vivacious sense of life within the track. This is supplemented by strummed guitars and whispering flutes that sound like they are lifted from old traveller’s folk music, perhaps explaining the song’s title.

First Play: Easy Audio - Gypsy Funk [Astropical Tapes]

Returning to his label with his first solo EP since 2013, Ian Pooley has delivered three deep, emotional techno tracks for the “Turakina EP”. We’re lucky to have secured the first play of the final (and our favourite) track from the release – a dub mix of “Mudou”. 

There’s an interesting and poignant story behind the release actually; the release is dedicated to Pooley’s dog Basil – who recently passed away after 12 years of companionship. It’s a truly fitting tribute and we’re sure this production will secure a spot in record bags for years to come.

First Play: Ian Pooley - Mudou (Dub) [Pooledmusic]

Hot on the heels of the monster release of “Mutter” on Gerd Janson’s Running Back, Konstantin Sibold has delivered an acid remix for the Danish experimental pop band WhoMadeWho.

The original song, an infectious 3-minute pop ballad has been mutated and stretched out into a pulsating acid track, aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Tomas Høffding’s vocals sit proudly over a thumping kick drum and result in 7 minutes of potent, almost ominous club music that sits resolutely at the low end of the pH scale.

Dinky has come forward with “Casa”, the first single from her forthcoming album due out this autumn on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels label. The tracks were recorded whilst she was resting at home, pregnant with her second son. Due to a medical risk, Dinky was forced to stay in bed and decided to keep herself busy by writing music.

Whilst the original features summery, almost blissful vocal hooks interspersed with acid bass gurgles, Satori’s remix takes thing down an altogether more turbulent route. Initially ambient and spaced out, it then morphs into a driving techno track, combined with reverberating pads and choral wails.

Since its inception in 2010, much of Uncanny Valley's output has found its way into our proverbial (and literal) record bags here at Flux. As big fans of both Jacob Korn and Cuthead, we watched the label grow, accommodating releases from the likes of Massimilano Pagliara and Joel Alter. In its relatively short lifetime, Uncanny Valley has become an extremely well regarded label in European house music.

It's a privilege to be hosting an exclusive from the Dresden-based label, but for now we'll leave you with a quote from the press release that summarises the release far more accurately than we ever could...

He's produced a pretty inconceivable total of 8 albums, released over 80 remixes and his music has also featured in TV series and adverts. To celebrate this milestone, Vince is releasing a 36-track boxset featuring beatless versions, reworks and remasters on his own label "Everysoul".

"Moments in Time", originally released in 2002 on Vince's second album has now been retouched, remastered and is an ethereal house masterpiece. We've fortunately managed to twist a few arms to let us host the premiere. Here's to another 20 years!

We've tried to avoid hosting exclusives from the same artists, but sometimes the tracks that make their way into the Flux inbox are simply too enticing. This is a remix of South London's Afriquoi by Krywald & Farrer. 

For the last 6 years, Afriquoi have been drawing from diverse influences across the African continent and repackaging them with a dancefloor aesthetic. "Can I know you" is no different, resulting from a collaboration with Kakatsitsi - a group of traditional drummers, dancers and singers from the Ga tribe of Southern Ghana.

Ben Gomori tweaks the mighty Nahawa Doumbia's Sigi Sele. Doumbia has been a prominent voice in Malian music since the late 80s. Gomori's tasteful edit gives a little more breathing room to the track, allowing the horns to really do the business on the dancefloor. Sterns edits delivers another fun yet refined release.

Posthuman are cousins Rich Bevan & Josh Doherty - veteran producers and DJs who have been in action since the late 90's. Modern spearheads of Acid House, the duo are residents & hosts of "I Love Acid" clubnight, as well as the vinyl-only label of the same name, and their main imprint "Balkan Vinyl". They have run well over a hundred parties since 2007 across the UK & Europe - with current regular residencies at Pickle Factory in London and Gorilla in Manchester. "I Love Acid" won best club event in DJ Magazine's Best of British awards 2019. 

The duo have an extensive back catalogue of 12"s on labels the like of Tusk Wax, X-Kalay, Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Body Work, Craigie Knowes, Shipwrec, Chiwax, Acid Avengers, B12 Records as well as their own imprints.
