The emotion behind this track is somewhat difficult to convey in a vague enough manner that suits me but I'll give it a try... Life is a little weird sometimes, especially as you get older and realize what a real balancing act it is. Then you will inevitably ask yourself why we were all so much happier when we were all young and life was unbalanced?...when we were blinded, so to speak, by our naivety and ignorance. Then responsibility sets in and the balancing begins. That's when you truly start to recognize what actually makes you happy. What stays? What is forgotten about? Who stays? Who is forgotten about?...My advice is to pay more attention to the outliers, the ones that you didn't have control over. The ones that you tried to forget but just couldn't, the ones you tried to keep but they just got away. This track is about one of those outliers...the one that keeps coming back.

Do you guys ever feel alone?...even when every usual sign is telling you that you are very much surrounded? Given the many sub-sets of mental, physical, and emotional loneliness that can occur; it's safe to say that everyone is lonely in some regard. Certain types of loneliness can come from out of nowhere and that blindside can put you into defense mode. You feel abandoned, so you try to control every little situation in an attempt to regain that feeling of presence...of comfort.  For me, that comfort doesn't come from another person, but rather, it comes from an understanding...an understanding that amounts to an ideal that I carry around with me every day. I can definitely feel, at times, when its principles have left me stranded... time to build back up and get back to where I was.

I get into these retrospective moods sometimes... they've been more frequent lately. I just sit and try to pick apart bits of my past, looking for memories that I had lost throughout the years. Doing this has taught me that, in any situation, whether you take a win or you take a loss; you learn something. But what if you experienced something and you were too young to see the lesson?... too naive to notice the "moral of the story"? Is it now too late to acquire that wisdom through hindsight? I don't think so... but then that begs the question: If anything can be learned from, what constitutes a regret?... At what point does the suffering outweigh the personal growth? I've always believed that regret was pointless because of the inherent, personal growth that comes along with it... I'm not so sure anymore.

It's spoken of in universal terms as this everlasting bond that's supposed to weather any storm, so to speak. The feeling itself fools us into thinking that we really know what "love" is...that it was even love we were receiving in the first place. Only when it turns on you do you realize that it was a lie. And only when you realize its falsehood do you realize just how much you sacrificed in order for that lie to perpetuate, to thrive and live as long as it did...was it worth it in the end?...Did it make you happy enough to go through it again knowing that there's a possibility of nothing having changed? That's what this song is about...that moment.

June 23rd was a dark day in American history, as far as I'm concerned. It's heart-breaking to watch the country that I served strip the rights that we fought to preserve. Cooler heads will know that when losing control, all that is needed is to fasten your grip... Fools panic and then only end up tightening their grip; choking the life out of the very thing that they think they're protecting. And that's even after having given the benefit of the doubt. This "brand" of anger that I feel towards this decision is the same kind that I feel when researching old crimes and you come across the inevitable homicide that is the result of rejection or a loss of pride... they just re-insert themselves back into the equation where they don't belong out of revenge, essentially... like an insecure ex needing that last ounce of control; until it means the end of someone else. Lives lost, needlessly. And that's where the metaphor finds me for this track; the insecure ex. We'll find an answer, we have to.  #istandwithyou

Coming across realizations can be a little rough sometimes... especially when it's been right in front of your face the entire time. Well guys, I went back to the journal. I went way back this time trying to find something to be inspired again. I found an old entry that consisted of a piece of advice that my mom gave me years ago before she passed. When I first read it the only thing that I knew was that it was important enough to me for me to write down. She said: "...when something in life sticks you at a red light, just remember that it's only that, a red light. Everyone gets their turn, if you just make it through then it'll turn green"...Finding that advice now, at this moment in my life, kind of forced me to apply those words introspectively in order to realize all of the different "red lights" that I've made it through since writing that journal entry. So, keeping with that feeling, I figured that I would take a few minutes to to speak to the past me, the old me... the old me that was sure that none of this would be possible. Inspiration. It's a powerful tool. The honeymoon phase of any project is so full of inspiration that it's sometimes hard to contain, in a sense... Thoughts and beliefs have a tendency to form barriers, walls if you will. These walls are metaphorical when speaking of them and emotional in nature but have the ability to give the illusion of safety and sanity. The effect is so powerful that we often seek its safety knowing full well that its just a placebo. Before you even realize it you have built a castle of sorts. The question then becomes whether you're safe because of those walls or are you truly better once they crumble? ...all I know is that it gets better, I just don't know how.
