Dutch designer Bouke Bruins has collaborated with Flux Projects twice over the last three years to create public social design experiences, including 2019’s RailtalkATL with Wouter Corvers and 2020’s Don’t Waste Your Vote with Daan Wuben. In the latest episode of The Extension podcast, Flux Projects Brand Manager Floyd Hall chats with Bruins about some of his early projects and how he and his collaborators approach Social Design, the differences in working in Holland versus Atlanta, and how becoming a Boy Scout influenced his design practice.

BOUKE BRUINS - Exploring Social Design

Artist Rachel Parish reads a creation story written for the land upon which Atlanta now sits and considers how the geology of place impacts the social structures that build upon it.  

This text accompanies her work Emergence, which builds monuments to the four spring heads buried beneath Downtown Atlanta.  By illuminating the “birthplaces” of Atlanta’s waterways, Emergence will offer the public the opportunity to collectively consider the power of the natural ecology upon which Atlanta has been built and the continued presence of the life-springs that support the land upon which the city’s residents live their lives.

Artist Hannah Palmer worked with sound producer Santiago Páramo to create a soundtrack for Ghost Pools, her public art installation exploring our history with public swimming.  The project remembers two pools in East Point, GA, that became battlegrounds over integration and were eventually abandoned.

Ghost Pools Soundtrack

This ambient audio journey uses field recordings from the river journey of Atlanta to the Atlantic, a public art project by artists Rachel Parish and Sarah Cameron Sunde.  From May 17 - June 23, 2024, Parish and Sunde kayaked the waters of the South River from a tributary in south Atlanta's Brown's Mill Golf Course to where the waters meet the Atlantic Ocean at Sapelo Island.  This was the first phase of their project.  

Atlanta to the Atlantic would culminate back in Atlanta with installations along South River tributaries in three City of Atlanta parks: Kirkwood Urban Forest, Arthur J. Langford Park, and Perkerson Park.

A collaboration with the South River Watershed Alliance, Atlanta to the Atlantic aims to foster awareness of the South River and its environmental health by bringing people into closer relationship with its waters that run through their neighborhoods.
