Kavir's Saltdome Orchestra

Nabro Volcano emitted water vapor, volcanic ash, and copious quantities of sulfur dioxide on the morning of June 22, 2011. At the time, the volcanic plume extended from the site of the eruption in Eritrea across the border into Ethiopia. This natural-color satellite image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite. The red outline at the base of the plume indicates an area of exceptional heat, either the site of the eruption or lava pooling in Nabro’s caldera.

Nunation: Endorheic Lake Fitri

Sonifications to accompany my presentations at ICAD2012 in Atlanta, Ga.



Eccentricity - Eccentricity is a measure of the shape of Earth’s orbit and has been linked to global climate patterns. Laskar created a mathematical solution for the orbital motions of Earth covering a time span of ~250 Ma. Here, periods of higher eccentricity (more elliptical orbit) are presented as lower frequency tones and more circular orbits are mapped higher.

Background - This sonification project combines preexisting paleoclimatic data (proxies) with astronomical calculations of Earth’s orbit. The mathematically based orbital solutions (Laskar 2004, 2010) are aligned in geologic time with real world oxygen isotope data (Wang 2012) and terrestrial mollusk species counts (Li 2008).
