Insomnia

Box Full of Air

Skywatching is a contemporary classical piece written for the Vermont Brass Ensemble. This is my second attempt at writing a piece for brass, and my first multi-movement work for a group of this size.

Movement 1, Sidereal Day, features a flugelhorn solo in the Lydian mode.  Listen for the stepwise motif in the final chords, it comes back later.

Movement 2, Lunar Month, features a Trombone solo (played here by Mei Endo) and a Tuba solo (played here by myself on Euphonium). This darker movement evokes the night sky, full of stars and a slowly rising moon. Picture sparse clouds gliding overhead.

Movement 3, Solar Day, again features Flugelhorn and Tuba solos. This movement is about laying on your back on a perfect summer's day. Picture fluffy clouds and a bright blue sky.
