This is something I couldn’t let live and die in the archives. It’s a narration/observation piece about someone who suffers with alcohol abuse. Through the mouths of the judgers & through the eyes of the abuser. I always say there’s 3 sides to every story, and in this here ol’ tale, it’s a one man show.

I had a dream I was talking to my future self on my death bed about all of my angst, self indulgence, being aware of who I am and also not recognising the man looking back at me in the mirror, so when I woke that morning, I wrote this. 
. 
“VELA” is the Latin word for CURTAINS.
I decided to title it this because no matter what way you try to spin it, tart it up, dress it nice and put on a brave face. The curtains close on all of our theatrical emotions some day, so my sub-conscious sent me to myself for the answers.

Plus, the curtains in the dream had a million words and scribbles on them which I haven’t quote deciphered.

VELA

Mainly, it’s a clan mentality piece, going to war on wax with my blood and teaching him the ruthlessness of the game and the tools you need to survive, like a Viking hunting in the wild with his offspring for the first time. I wanted to test the boundaries of lyrical ability and my writing. I wrote this from a perspective of protecting Calen with my words. My words and art have kept me safe for as long as I can remember and I’ve always felt like if I can offer my child anything, it’s the knowledge I’ve picked up along the way. This is that with a mix of becoming a puppeteer to my own ego and competing in the sport of rap.

“The Soundtrack” is a deeply introspective track born from Flynn’s reflections on his journey as an artist and individual. Blending influences from UB40, Eminem, 50 Cent, and The Fugees, the single serves as the cinematic “theme song” to Flynn’s life, highlighting his internal dialogue of “Composure vs. Composer.”

The Soundtrack

Flynn Johnson is a multifaceted writer whose poetry, storytelling & introspection shatters through the various realms of Hip-Hop. 
The Blanchardstown, Dublin 15 native first started penning his own lyrics from the early age of 10. Influenced by artists such as Tupac, Nas, Eminem, 50 Cent, & the whole of the Shady/Aftermath roster, 
Flynn developed an undeniable love for creating songs for his friends and family to listen to and deciphering rhymes to study a formula that would certainly be fool-proof. 
His passion for literature & realism saw Flynn rapping over any instrumentals he could get his pre-adolescent hands on, narrating the gritty cold truths that froze time & touching on subjects he had no business knowing, it was evident he had found his calling in rhyme. 

Fast-forward a few years, tears & thousands of torn pages. Flynn found himself under the wing of artist and producer ROC. The two would go on to release a debut EP titled "In The Meantime" with a bass-heavy, pop influenced tracklist of 5. Flynn's versatility and ROC's production range shun through,  it was critically acclaimed and helped lay the foundation for what Flynn & ROC were constructing. 
Since then, the duo have built a rapport and chemistry in the form of single releases. The track "Man_Cub" from ROC's NINETYNIE beat collection album has gone on to be an Irish Hip-Hop cult classic, in the words of District Magazine. 

Sporadic single releases and accolades aside. Flynn's style, creativity and perspective on the adaptation of the life of a young, working-class man has perked ears near and far. With is witty word play, unorthodox pockets and puppet show of emotions, Flynn isn't afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve and stand out like a sore thumb. 
Flynn is set to release his debut album at the end of 2023 which he describes as "a love letter to the estate, beautiful streets of D15 and a thank-you note for the lessons it taught me" Consciously and conceptually based around a time-stamp of the early 00s - 2010s accompanied by a sound that emulates that feeling,  his introduction as a writer and producer is set to cement his name alongside the Hall of Famers that he looks up to in Irish Hip Hop.
