From time to time, I start feeling like I'm without artistic merit, especially in comparison to the many fantastic artists, composers, and performers on YouTube. When that mood strikes, I often console myself by pulling out one of my most visually and audibly impressive pieces, just to remind myself that 15 years of piano practice hasn't been for naught!

It's been a while since I've played this piece, however, and my fingers got raw too quickly to take many takes. It's good, but not perfect.

Unfortunately, I don't have the sheet music specific to this version I played; it was an impromptu amalgam of two different sheets (one a raw orchestral score, and another a simplified piano version). I had to keep my hands moving fast to continue to emulate the orchestral and full sound that this awesome song provides! I hope you enjoy it!

Upon request, I decided to re-do my 1 Piano Version of Doctor Who's "I Am The Doctor", now with my new mic (and ability to record on the Grand Piano).

Unfortunately, during the first take, the piano emitted a horrific twang and I was terrified that I'd broken something. That turned out to be the better take until that point, so Audacity kindly let me merge the tracks together mostly seamlessly. You wouldn't know it just to hear it (I hope), but this is actually two takes of the same song merged together. Apologies that it's so obvious with the video, however; I'm not quite skilled enough to blend those together easily, and it was tricky enough getting the timing acceptable.

Additionally, while listening to the original piece, I decided that I much preferred the two-piano version for accuracy (not to take away from Sebastian's magnificent transcription; I simply feel he chose to make it more playable instead of more true to the song, for the majority pianists' sakes). So watch out for this song to be uploaded again as a two-piano, twice-as-long version (assuming I can make the two-piano version work!).

Hey all! One of my most popular Soundcloud performances was this very piece, so I felt it was time to re-record it with my better setup. I was pleasantly surprised by this specific take - I thought it nothing special while recording, but the playback showed it to be quite pleasant! (There may still be a re-uploaded version coming within the week, depending on response and whether or not I even have access to a piano).

Yes that's right! With spring break coming, I may not even have access to a piano for the next 10 days! A bit unfortunate, so I decided to leave you (and myself) with something nice to tide us over.

If someone hadn't told me otherwise, I would've sworn that this is part of the official soundtrack for The Hunger Games. (I still think it should be, in fact!) I was very excited to play this piece, and when razorc03 and violingal13 finally teamed up to produce some sheet music, I couldn't wait to try it out. 

I happened to require the sheet music in PDF format (for playing on my iPad), so I decided to turn razorc03's png files into one nice compact PDF, and then decided that I shouldn't be the only one to have a nice PDF - so I shared them with razorc03! They were then kind enough to ask me to perform their song, and I was blown away! I was already planning on doing it, but when the original composer asks to hear you play their song, it's something special :)

So thank you very much razorc03 for composing this piece, and for asking me to play it. And thank you very much for violingal13 for putting it down on paper, because I'm useless without sheet music :D

Performer's Note: You may notice that I didn't stay completely true to the sheet music as it's written. For my fellow pianists who may wish to play it the same way I did, there are only a couple of changes:

1) I filled out the right-hand chords (usually by adding the octave below, plus occasionally a fourth, fifth, or sixth). This held true from measure 1 (after the measure zero lead in - just measure one played once) until measure 38.

2) I added the bottom octave to the first note of each left-hand measure, starting on measure 8, and continuing to the end of the song.

These two minor changes increased the difficulty of the song a bit, but I felt that it was appropriate, considering the scene I had in mind when performing this: Katniss' whistling of Rue's Song near the end of the games, and remarking at the beauty and complexity of the piece as the mockingjays began singing over another, adding harmonies and melodies. I wanted to emulate the depth created by a forest of mockingjays singing together. That may have contributed to the slightly sad tone of the performance, too; it's quite difficult to remember that scene without a bit of sorrow.

That's about as much as I can say without having to include a Spoiler Alert! Hopefully that's enough for those of you who've read The Hunger Games to understand where I was coming from!

(Also: It turns out it's very difficult to simulate the sound and dynamics of a whistle while using a percussion instrument :| Oh well, I did my best! :D )

Taking a break from performing my store of rather difficult Hunger Games and How To Train Your Dragon songs, I decided to record this song from .hack//SIGN (or .hack//EXTRA? Apologies, I'm not familiar with the series) that a friend sent me this morning! I thought it was extremely pretty and merited a good effort; fortunately despite me not feeling great, the sheet music was rather easy to read, and I was able to get a presentable take after about an hour of practice! :D

Only a couple more days till The Hunger Games premieres! And the official soundtrack was released today!! I've had the pleasure of listening to the entire sothing on infinite repeat for the past couple hours, apart from when I was inspired to finally finish up this song!

(Note: I must say, I'm beginning to feel a bit bad about being excited about The Hunger Games - wouldn't that imply I'm from The Capitol?)

Hopefully the many fans of this wonderful series will recognize T.T.L.'s "Deep Shadows" from The Hunger Games Official Trailer (http://youtu.be/4S9a5V9ODuY). 

Fortunately for us, Sebastian Wolff (http://www.youtube.com/user/GermanSeabass) took the time to transcribe that into sheet music! It was a toughie, though - that's for sure. I was hoping to be able to present this piece to you after only a couple hours of practice; I ended up needing a good three days to really get it nailed down (and even then I simplified a few parts from Sebastian's original transcription)!

I'm a classically trained pianist, and took lessons for about 12 years before continuing on my own in my spare time.
