Milestones

The first in a short occasional series of tracks dedicated to lost places.

Many cultures believe in 'household spirits', presences that define a place and that are to be respected or acknowledged to maintain spiritual harmony. What happens to this consciousness when a place is abandoned or demolished? What do the spirits of a place do when the place is forsaken by those upon whom those spirits rely for verification? Some souls rely on a place to anchor them.

In 1882 Philip Brannon built a large house on the Naze cliffs above the site and called it Highcliff Mansion. In 1886 the building became the St Osyth Home of Rest for the Work Girl’s Protection Society of London, and remained aa such until around 1895, training girls for domestic service and providing holidays for the overworked. By 1901, as St. Osyth House, it had become a private college. Then from around 1922 it became the Mabel Greville Convalescent Home and was again a children’s home prior to its sale in 1939. The building was demolished in 1984, and new houses now occupy the site.

Mabel Greville survives in the name of a breakwater that is one of several concrete ones along the coast which, coupled with the usual groynes, are designed to reduce longshore drift and to try to stabilize the beaches.

What happens to this consciousness when a place is abandoned or demolished? What do the spirits of a place do when the place is forsaken by those upon whom those spirits rely for verification? Some souls rely on a place to anchor them.

The warehouse that I spent most of my time in from 2003-2008 had steel pillars holding up its roof, proper solid steel pillars from another time. Embossed on them were the words “Dorman Long” I was always a little in awe of these symbols of real production, which, although they were cast a mere 250 miles away on this little island, might as well have been an artifact from some ancient civilisation, one where men still made things.

In 2005 I toured the D-Day landing sites of Normandy. At Arromanches a length of steel from that staggering feat of engineering the Mulberry harbour had been given prime spot on a promenade, repainted and decorated with flowers as a monument. Upon it the words “Dorman Long” appeared.

I returned to my warehouse feeling more privileged than ever.
One morning about a month ago I awoke to a radio interview recorded with the schoolchildren of Redcar.

If it was a bank felled by greed and not a steel works............
