Play On Records is proud to present Flashed Glass, a new record from electronic duo Sleep D and mixed chamber ensemble Ad Lib Collective. Culminating from a two-year project borne out of a live collaboration in a Melbourne underground carpark, the LP marries the euphoria of the concert hall and the club, presenting a rich sonic universe for the listener to discover. 

Having first been introduced at rehearsals for Play On’s 6th series in late 2018, the two groups hit it off, opting to perform a semi-improvised set together, rather than two separate sets as originally planned. They soon realised their pairing could unlock sounds they wouldn’t have otherwise found on their own, and their idea for further collaboration was born. 

Because Flashed Glass didn’t use formal notation in the creation process, this resulted in charts and maps to plot out each track. This influenced the artists’ sonic interpretations of vast open spaces, dystopian landscapes and expansive journeys. What’s culminated is a record that combines spacious, repetitive, ambient electronica with the gentle, lilting woodwinds, strings and acoustic percussion of modern classical. 

In March 2020, the two groups recorded at Head Gap studios in Preston — layering sounds, building melodies, and striking out what didn’t work — until the COVID-19 pandemic cut things short, twice, due to Melbourne’s dual lockdowns. This resulted in an accidental hybrid work, finishing as a mix of live professional recordings, and DIY home-recorded samples, with the latter including crushed plastic and pulverised sea shells. 

This marks the first release of Play On Records, a Melbourne-based label exploring the intersection of acoustic and electronic music. This release is available on vinyl and digital download.

Back in the nineties, Human Beings were pioneers in the Dutch techno scene. And The Matrix may well be their finest moment. SoHaSo gives this stone-cold classic the re-release it deserves, together with a magical Plaid-remix and a forgotten track, straight from DAT.

Together with Quazar and Fierce Ruling Diva, Utrecht-based duo Human Beings were among the very first brave enough to go live, back in 1992. Dance music was still called house or techno. Other flavors only came later.

Both Allert Aalders and Bert van der Grift were proper nerds. Their studio was filled to the brims with vintage synthesizers and drum computers and all machines were constantly challenged. Van der Grift sadly passed away in 2005 after a sudden cerebral haemorrhage, marking the abrupt end of Human Beings.

The Matrix ticks all the boxes of a proper Human Beings-tune: crystal clear melodies sweeping from corner to corner, ultra-clever drum programming and a main theme that knocks your socks right off. In the energetic live version, they have shaped the track to perfection. A secret weapon that works wonders on dancefloors, even 30 years later.

London duo Plaid strip The Matrix to its bare essentials, focusing on the main melody while giving the kick a bit more oomph in a Plaid kinda way.	

Ghost in the Shell is exactly that. A forgotten off-beat track, made during one of those many sessions in Bert's crampy studio. Its murky downtempo rhythms take a nod to both Meat Beat Manifesto and Renegade Sound Wave.

Human Beings - The Matrix

Last show of the year for our Japanese crew ワイルドキャット Soundsystem. 

For this special occasion, they are thrilled to have Tokyo party collective @yescheftokyo on board today! 

Broadcasting from Tokyo, Yes Chef! Radio is a weekly dose of red hot Disco, House, Techno and all things dance music. They will be sharing their favourite new releases - stone cold classics and rare vinyl gems from Japan’s incredible record stores.

Collective leaders, Joe O  and Good Company Broadcast Group, have channelled their newfound buzz to play monthly shows at clubs across the Japanese capital into their own showcase, now available on Keakie (www.keakie.com/shows/yes-chef-radio).

With host duties rotating between Joe and Good Company, the show leaves no stone unturned in exploring the groove, from Disco heaters to cool, jazzy House, via some thrilling edits.
