As a respected member of the Metalheadz family for 7 years, the time has now come for Friske to unleash his first full length album in the shape of 'A Different Perspective'.

Since breaking through, Friske, aka Sam Oliver, has consistently and habitually honed his skills whilst preserving an ever-present style that focuses on razor sharp breaks and dark and foreboding moods, as well as incorporating veins of influences from b-boyism and hip hop culture.

A product of 3 years of hard and diligent studio work, 'A Different Perspective' is without doubt Friske's own take on drum & bass. This is an artist who has never followed trends and prefers to take inspiration, stimulation and motivation from outside of the genre - something arguably reminiscent of early powerhouses such as Adam F and J Majik. This is an irrefutable factor in the culmination of a more alluring fusion of sounds which is where Friske really begins to hit his apex.

With 16 uncompromising, high-caliber solo tracks to choose from this is an album that will further identify Friske as one of the most respected and distinctive underground drum & bass producers in the years to come.

‘It’s been nine years since my first release on Dispatch Recordings (Structure made with Skeptical). In that time I’ve featured on so many releases with some great producers (DLR, Homemade Weapons, Black Barrel, Dub Head, Tephra & Arkoze, Bredren). I have built a back catalogue of music that I’m incredibly proud of. It’s with great pleasure that I can now present my own project – the Frequencies EP.

This is the culmination of over two years of work – what started as a collaboration with Test Switch has grown to become a varied collection of tracks featuring some of my close friends and allies within the scene. The title track – Frequencies – is a particularly poignant moment as I have known Ben for nearly 15 years. He was the first promoter to offer me a proper residency, and I continue to play at his night – the Bristol-based ‘Intrigue’ – to this day.

This EP has allowed me to showcase my versatility as an artist. I’ve balanced the more aggressive lyrical styles (something for the heads that like to hear an MC spit!) with the catchy dance floor rollers and some laid back, conscious grooves. Whatever you are into, I’d like to think you will find it here.

‘Frequencies’ is also a pivotal moment in my career as – for the first time – I am the lead artist as opposed to a ‘feature’. This scene can sometimes undervalue the role of the MC, and I think it’s critical that we are recognised as artists within our own rights.

However, I am completely aware that without the hard work of the producers involved, there would be no music. I cannot make tracks on my own; I do not claim to be a producer. It’s a team effort, and I only work with people that I get along with, where there is mutual respect. I am super grateful to all of the guys for the beats they’ve made.

Music can take you so many places. I once freestyled with C-Rayz Walz back in 2003 in a dark alley in Baltimore near the Ottobar. In September 2024, I performed at Sun & Bass alongside the DJ Strife at Ambra Day, San Teodoro, Sardinia - a global mecca of drum & bass. I’ve had the pleasure of emceeing and hosting for inimitable artists like LTJ Bukem, Goldie, Makoto, Zero T, Break, Calyx, Ray Keith, Nookie, Mampi Swift, Aphrodite, Klute, DJ SS, Fabio, Total Science, Audio, Teebee, Pola & Bryson, Flava D, Redeyes, S.P.Y, Ant TC1, Craze, Kasra, Mefjus, Halogenix, Bad Company UK, Digital, Matrix & Futurebound, Heist, Command Strange, Phibes, Spinscott, MC Fava, DJ Rap, Enei, Bladerunner, Robert Manos, Dieselboy, DJ Dara, AK1200, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, The Upbeats, Critical Impact, Sub Zero, Random Movement, Gremlinz, Rene LaVice, Prolix, Loadstar, Brookes Brothers, T.R.A.C, The Prototypes, Sinistarr, Quadrant, Taxman, Teddy Killerz, and so many more. I love the rush that accompanies the feeling of holding the mic, but having no idea of what I am going to say next.  When you are the conduit between the DJ and the crowd, the medium by which expression is felt and shared.  In those moments you are able to influence the crowd + what people may think or feel, the night, and the direction it will follow.  Ultimately, that memory will be yours to keep forever.  I have been freestyling, writing music, and emceeing for over 22 years now with no plans to change.  My goal is to share a piece of who I am every time I perform for those who listen.  I emcee simply because I love it.
