(Soundtrack for Windowsen FW21 Barbie with the Chinese Zodiac Collection)

@ruiho - Horror Pop Barbie

This is a collaborative project between RUI HO and the designer and founder, Sensen Li, of the Chinese fashion brand Windowsen. RUI HO made this set of music for Windowsen’s 2021 Fall/Winter Couture and ready to wear show, which has been a combination of fashion runway, Lip Sync, video installation and garment presentation continuing for over 40 minutes.

Easily came out as one of the most imaginative and memorable shows during the whole Shanghai fashion week this season, the whole show is filled with sounds that drives the inspirations from genres such as vogue house, techno, hardcore, deconstructed club and spoken words, etc. The soundtrack, accompanying the theme of the show: Barbie and the Chinese Zodiac, has used the samples of Aqua’s europop classic “Barbie Girl”, a lot of screaming and horrific laughters and one of the segment of Rupaul’s drag race’s recap on heavy autotune and distortion.

Last night we presented @threadsradio with Brooklyn’s undergrounds finest contemporary @danirev on @coccyyx. Dani’s signature of pulse, structure and dynamism is left with no imperfection on this mix. A gazing shadow of breakbeat outrun by rumpled kicks and bass, tied in with early noughtie classics (e.g. Gwen Stefani, Linkin Park, Elliot Smith, Marilyn Manson, and many more.) They utilise a plethora of soundscapes as divisive transitions. The 60 minutes takes deliberately renewed purpose in each upward ascension of Techno, Gabber, Dance and Electronica. A standout moment is her mid-mix placement of a Himukalt harsh noise track blended into ‘She Said’ by Introversion. Consisting of a Tatu sample drawing us back into pleasantries of IDM as a means of replenishment for the remainder of the experience. 

Having worked with Dani in the early months of 2020, her markswoman precision and articulating intangible emotion can only be explained in her vast experience and training as a producer/ DJ. Keeping a close eye on whats to come from her in the near future, we are grateful to have had her as a guest on the series.

K. Mulhern is a poet, filmmaker, and sound artist based in NYC. Her work looks at the swath of human time from the detached standpoints of pre-humanity and post-apocalypse through an iconography of discarded artifacts and Edenic landscapes. 

Cember (Pressed against Winter I have a floating feeling) is an unusually personal work for Mulhern, functioning as a diaristic record of the month of December. The mix travels from one movement to another stitched by field recordings of the artist’s shoes clacking in the subway station, environments shifting as she passes conversations, creaking rails, a plaintive subway performance. Also included is a recording of her mother following along to a YouTube laughter yoga tutorial and a Bruce Springsteen song Mulhern once fell in love to.
