Our rebel talent from Ohio, throws down a funky techno live performance James Johnson Jr AKA Plural is one exceptionally talented electronic music producer, composer and DJ known across the world for his hard techno sound. His calm demeanour belies the massive amounts of energy he creates in his highly technical DJ sets, and the ethereal beauty of his live performances with many top-flight DJs swearing by his output, dropping his tracks relentlessly throughout their sets. He grew up in the 80’s listening mostly to soul, RnB and hip-hop. He knew he wanted to follow a musical path, but because he couldn’t rap or sing and was more interested in the beats he decided to become a DJ. His early inspiration came from amazing artists like Stevie Wonder, Prince, Michael Jackson, Herby Handcock and Public Enemy. after becoming a DJ and discovering so many more styles of music out there, especially techno, it was Jeff Mills, Claude Young, DJ Stingray and The Horrorist to name a few that held his awe.

Asymptote is a Rome based duo, resident dj of the insane Resistance events and label head behind of Suburban Avenue (@suburban-avenue).
Their music is defined as a Retro-Futuristic Techno; it's inspired by the early 90’s Detroitian elements and the newest and darkest electronic movements.
Through their productions, Asymptote, give us their own synthesis between Acid, Raw, Electro and EBM sounds.

Next up on Unmasked Discussion iS Cukier, founder and resident at Codeword, the techno series at Fold and monthly show on Threads radio.  As a DJ, Cukier is drawn to deep and transcendent sounds inspired by a blend of Berlin industrial-minimalism and more explorative, trippier soundscapes. 

As event curator, Cukier’s Codeword events have been praised for “expertly smudging the line between the emotive and dynamic”. With a focus on timeless and immersive techno, Codeword lineups have featured artists including Efdemin, Boris, Inigo Kennedy, Inland, Blind Observatory and Jamaica Suk. The event series is set to return to the dancefloor in 2022.

Belfast based dj Nez is an obsessive vinyl collector, dj and lover of all genres of electronic music specializing in techno, electro and house music of all forms. He started djing around Belfast regularly in 1998 playing mainly both house and techno and was a resident dj at the legendary Evolution night in Vico’s. After relocating to Leeds he promoted his own night Device and was a resident at Darkside (now Detatched) until he moved back to Belfast. Since then he has co-promoted Grub with Boxctutter, played at all the big clubs like Shine, Electrotoxic/Diston/Acroplane, Ecker, to name a few and was one fourth of the Pressure nights and is now currently resident dj/promoter for DSNT, Beat BBQ and Scope and is the label owner of Computer Controlled Records.

Mister Willis is an english dj. During his 12 years spent in Manchester enjoying nightlife and club culture from a young age, the city was a fantastic place by having some of the best parties, records shop, music institution in the Uk and being surrounded by many djs/producers that made him develop his hobby to a passion and started playing locally. Now based in Berlin for 3 years he is the resident of Rave Atlas parties held in Suicide Circus and occasionally have a takeover at Hoer Berlin a few times a year. Over lockdown he started ‘Gardens’ with budding DJ Sparkling Water Dreams, a platform to showcase their music, that maybe don’t always get opportunities to do so. 
However Black owls is happy to have him onboard by offering us the second part of this series of podcasts.

Phemia is an Antwerp-based DJ. Music has always played a role in her life. Her dad runs a musical instrument store so naturally, she learnt various instruments throughout her childhood. The piano was the main instrument of choice.
Phemia’s teenage years were where electronic music entered the equation. Her passion for techno was built dancing nights away in Belgium’s clubs. Artists like DVS1 and Surgeon, amongst others, were big inspirations for her.
In Roman Mythology Virgil wrote about Phemia: “She had her feed on the ground and her head in the clouds. Making the small seems great and the great seems greater.”
Expect a strong, danceable, energetic techno experience from Phemia.

Whilst being regarded for many years as a force within the hard dance scene with his Rebel Frequency project he has also explored other genres House and Garage.
