Spring is here and with it comes a fresh installment in the PAX-Series. For our march edition we have a mix by @samo-rane, a multi disciplined musician based in Berlin.

You might have seen him on line ups at “Art Bei Ton” events, where he is a resident Dj. But Samo Rane does so much more than Djing, he is also an electronic music producer and mastering engineer with a preference for ambient and techno music.

Being based in Berlin was not fully by choice however, in 2016 the Iranian unfortunately had to leave his home country and flee to Berlin, where he has been working and living since then. Samo has been using his musical talents and his work to express his political convictions. He runs a collective record label and podcast “mercyTechno” where he collects donations for artists and refugees and appeals against violence and discrimination in any form. In February he released his EP titled “Aliveness” on the label, again using his music to support refugees. We highly recommend you check it out, it showcases twisted dark sounds and his affinity for sound design and mastering really shines through.

Then onto the mix, it is a crazy 2 hour ride fizzing with energy that sucks you in and won't let you go. It's dark, unrelenting, very hypnotic but with moments of melancholy and euphoria, holding your attention and making you long for those dark nights from before, and those that are yet to come…

PAX-SERIES - VI - Samo Rane

Exos is an artist with loads of experience: he has put out more than twenty vinyl records and four albums since he debuted at age 17. He has described Iceland, and the island’s raw and untouched nature, as the inspiration for the energy of his music. Exos always seem to surprise his listeners with his atmospheric electronics. Moving freely in the flux of unpredictable creativity and constant wide spreading interests, Elisa has been mixing for over 15 years, beginning in her native Sardinia before moving to Milan. Her own productions have been much welcomed by international audiences and artists alike, gaining considerable airplay both on the dancefloor and on the radio. More recently Elisa’s releases have delved into techno and 90s UK rave sounds, with her love for acid driving her exploration.

Pär Grindvik joins for DifferentSound Podcast #126.

Pär Grindvik has been a central figure in the Swedish electronic scene since the 90s as record store owner, label manager and producer. In his artistic career Pär has released music across a plethora of acclaimed electronic labels, including a string of hits on his own Stockholm LTD imprint as well as Drumcode, with frequent collaborator Hardcell. Pär’s recent output has seen him contribute music to labels such as Semantica, Marbacka, Sinister and Dystopian. Founded in 2002, Stockholm LTD began as an outlet for singles and EPs from Swedish artists with a focus on releasing timeless electronic music. It has since developed into a hallmark for finely crafted electronic music from a range of international artists. Pär continues to serve as one of the most exciting and hardworking contributors to the scene. Every inch of Pär’s work, including labels, artwork, release info and music, is wrapped with heart and emotion, a quality which keeps the sparkle and curiosity alive within the ever changing adaptations of the artistic world.

EPM Podcast 156 comes from the low-profile German producer His Master’s Voice. He has been intricately weaving sounds from IDM, Jungle, breakbeat, electro and techno into a melange that can be heard in his often cineastic podcasts which he again produces to glorious effect here for EPM. Bringing together electronic maverick’s like DMX Krew, Skee Mask, ERP, DJ Stingray 313, Answer Code Request and more, his take on techno is a cultured blend of outsider disco 3000. 

Also, he has been transferring this mixture in a less listening focused manner, yet being no less surprising, to dancefloors across Germany and sometimes beyond. His releases span from left field club music as heard on Schleifen in 2017 to stuttering rhythms boosted by rough, yet emotive melodies with his latest Delsin EP in 2022.

For this episode and for the followings, I wanted to give the floor to some artists I admire and respect a lot. I believe everyone has ideas, a voice, opinions they want to fight for. I believe we can aspire for a better future world through music. Today, I have invited @djauspex to record a Mixing for a Cause podcast.

MFC 28 : Auspex - A Broken System

Having cut his teeth over the years coming up through Brooklyn’s now imperiled warehouse scene, Auspex has solidified himself as a regular fixture and contributor to its strong underground techno community, very much at home in and a part of New York City's burgeoning and vibrant queer nightlife scene. Known for creating energetic and raucous dance floors and driving them to bedlam, blending skittering techno and blistering industrial with anthemic rave and glitchy breaks to create dense and textured overtures, his uncompromising and unapologetic style has seen him tapped to play as support for many international touring acts from Phase Fatale to Randomer, Kamikaze Space Programme to Headless Horseman, Juan Atkins to Rebekah—as well as being called upon to throw down on the regular at NYC techno institutions and parties such as Unter, The Black Hole and The Bunker New York. As the club scene of NYC has emerged to the forefront of the scene, he has also been tapped by The Good Room, Elsewhere, before settling in with his residency party Altær at new subterranean techno haunt, Basement. The past few years have also seen him making multiple appearances in Berlin at such notable parties as Staub and Pornceptual, and venues like Griessmuehle and ://about blank.  

For this mix, he wanted to highlight Intentional Spaces for Queer and Marginalized Persons.

Auspex: “When I got down to thinking about a cause, I couldn’t help but to feel a bit powerless in the face of so many great causes and questioning how I can really affect change in the world as a mere individual when the systems we operate under are irrevocably damaged. So, I began to question what I am most passionate about and where I most influential, and realized it was in fact in the furnishing and preservation of community dance spaces for queer and marginalized persons, enclaves of powerful manifestations and modern day magics. Recently, this gave rise to the concept of “intentional spaces,” refuges from the capitalistic machinations of corporate money proliferating the dance music landscape, spaces where the purpose of what these cells of counter-culture influence has been lost over the years. So, my truest passion and cause lies within the continuation and proliferation of these spaces—how do we preserve them and their intent? How do we coalesce behind similar ideals and affect real change towards the greater causes that need our attention by using these spaces as think tanks for the greater good? All questions with no end point, but what’s most important is in positing them within our communities in the first place and creating action where we can. The rave isn’t simply a place for hedonistic excess, although it very well can serve one’s needs in those ways, but rather, a place in which like-minded and forward-thinking individuals can begin to redefine the parameters of what society can and should look like, if only on the micro level. So, in setting a mission statement to create “intentional space” we are setting forth with a purpose to provide and accomplish something broader and grander than simply a night out and re-establishing a framework for the necessary and cathartic work that nightlife spaces can provide for marginalized but also reinterpreting them as opportunities for the coalescence of ideas that fuel the resistance to tyranny in all its forms all around us.”

Born 1966, I fell in love with music when I was a five year old, where the summer of 1971 was plagued with the infectious synth lead of Pop Corn by the French cover group Hot Butter, and their interpretation of Gershon Kingsley's original from 1969. I've been DJing and arranging parties since 1979. 

Affiliated with NEMCOM [Norrköping Electronic Music Community, Est. 2002, Reg. 2003], for 16 years, as an artist firstly, then arranging numerous of events with two-figure number of event concepts/formats, and three-figure number guest artists through the years. Development of local DJs and artists is also a core activity in our community and association, taking place in our local #NKPGLearnSpace by NEMCOM.
