EPM Podcast 142 comes from ghetto-tech, booty, hip-hop, electro, house and techno producer, Detroit’s Filthiest. Detroit’s Filthiest (Julian Shamou) began DJing as a teenager in Detroit in the mid-90s and has gone on to produce over 100 records under multiple aliases including DJ Nasty, Digitek, 313 Bass Mechanics and these days, Detroit's Filthiest. Here for our 142nd podcast we get Detroit’s Filthiest undiluted as Julian shakes it up with new releases ‘Werewolf’ and ‘All White Buffs’ amongst the many rump-shakin’ anthems in his cannon.

Originally born in Baghdad, Shamou and his family moved to Detroit in the summer of 1983, just before the dawn of techno. Despite growing up in Detroit during the ‘80s and ‘90s, Shamou never planned on a career in electronic music.  "All the music that I liked, you could only get on 12" records; they wouldn't make it on CD," he says of his early record collecting days. "I just wanted to have this music.  I was buying vinyl for a year before I bought a $99 turntable.  A year after I bought that turntable, I bought a drum machine and thought, this is more exciting.  I want to make music."

Shamou soon became a part of the city's emerging Ghettotech scene in the late 90s, working primarily under the alias DJ Nasty. In 2002 he released 'Pass Out' under his 313 Bass Mechanics alias for Ed DMX's Breakin Records.  Fast-forward to 2015 and platinum selling UK house dons, Disclosure sample it for their massive ‘Bang That’ track.

Today, Detroit's Filthiest continues to push boundaries with his music production.  Refusing to stick within just one genre he makes hip hop beats, bouncing electro bombs, smooth house cuts, warehouse techno and booty shaking tracks as his Motor City Electro Company imprint (MCEC), which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019, continues to channel his creative output and Detroit’s Filthiest becomes his main production alias.

As well as releases on MCEC, he has also released on the likes of Defected (with the smash ‘Handprint’), Casa Voyager, Bass Agenda, Philthtrax, Defrostatica, RotterHague Records and many more.

Detroit’s Filthiest’s new electro track ‘Werewolf’ features on ‘EPM20 – EP2’ alongside new cuts from The Advent and Zein Ferreira, Carl Finlow and Modulator AKA Freddie Fresh.

Our third artist of this January roster is the illustrious DJ, producer and Of Paradise Co-Founder Fade, who has been making a name for herself in the electronic music scene with trademark bass-heavy sounds in both her productions and DJ sets. Blending intense rhythms with emotive melodies, her hard-hitting style has marked her out as an artist playing by her own rules.

She hosts regular radio shows on Movement Radio and dublab, and has previously been on the air with prominent stations Rinse FM, Reprezent, and Operator Radio, as well as providing mixes for the likes of Fold, Bubble Bath, Hypnotic Groove, and Bicep.

Having previously released music on her own imprint, Fade is currently working on her debut EP which is set for release later this year, and is working with artists on forthcoming releases for her recently launched label Badlands.

Second one for our new OYE podcast series is our good friend MEJLE. Since some year´s we are working with him now as he is always bringing the newest hotest Mechatronica stuff to our shop.

MEJLE is a DJ and co-owner of Mechatronica - the Berlin based record label and collective, founded in 2012. Mechatronica releases music from an umbrella of artists across their labels, and holds club night residencies across Berlin for the past decade.

We are beyond thrilled to have Fade for our next guest mix @symposiumrecords ! I have been following Fade and the Of Paradise label for quite some time. Both have been a big influence on what I play in my sets and curate for Symposium Records.

Following an appearance on Touched Electronix 4 and a collaboration with Zodiac Childs towards the end of last year, this man’s debut EP Error 502 with the brilliant “Wisdom Track” has established him as a promising new talent. Using analogue hardware, the London-based producer fuses melancholic braindance and breakbeat-laced electro with cosmic acid melodies.

This mix is a perfect reflection of what this man is capable of: a blend of electro, acid & breaks with tons of long stretched soundscapes and lush melodies. It contains both well-established bangers and a few unreleased gems.

One listen to her release catalogue, and it’s clear that Lauren Chalmers has nailed the weighty swing of breakbeat, techno and all in between. As the Co-Founder of @ofparadiserecords – which has seen the likes of @strattontrax and @Interplanetary-Criminal – she divides her time between the studio, appearing at leading radio stations (including @RinseFM and @MutantRadio) and directing the label.
