CEM’s unique brand of emotive hysteria was forged in Herrensauna’s hedonistic Berlin furnace in the last few years, and as one of the party’s two core members, he has been at the heart of the operations since its inception. With the party attracting more and more attention for its critical contribution to Berlin’s queer community, as well as their raw italo-metal aesthetic, the opportunity came to move into Tresor, where it has cemented its place as a unique addition to Berlin’s nocturnal topography. CEM’s role in all this is twofold—firstly, as curator of the party’s unique mix of frenetic DJs and industrial-edged live performances; and secondly, as one of the resident DJs. The sheer pace of Herrensauna’s preferred grade of techno is offset by his enigmatic presence and selection. It’s a crucial edge of the party, and it’s rightfully brought CEM to the world’s attention.

MCMLXXXV is perhaps best known as a founding member of Herrensauna - the beloved queer party originating in Berlin - but the influence of his curational work resonates much further afield, encompassing the spheres of music, art and fashion with a sincere appreciation of subcultural movements and their associated aesthetics.
His DJ sets celebrate a countercultural approach to electronic music, drawing upon an intense, seductive fusion of charged rhythmic tension and obscure sonic imagery. With a comprehensive knowledge of genres ranging from EBM and electro to hard trance and industrial, his ability to weave seemingly disparate references together is the result of years spent dedicated to the underground, in all its grit and glamour.

Herrensauna reflects the need for a queer-led techno event in a city where underground and mainstream sit tensely alongside each other, and gentrification threatens the vast network of cultural spaces the city calls its own. Despite its name - a tongue-in-cheek reference to the clandestine culture of gay men’s saunas - it is the sense of community at the parties, which have now travelled the globe, that lend to their ever growing influence across the queer diaspora.

Upcoming highlights include showcases at Dekmantel Festival, Sonar 2022, as well as the release of the second V/A EP on Herrensaunas own Label featuring Slikback, Isabella, Crystallmess and more.

Awakenings Podcast #112 - MCMLXXXV x CEM

@mannidee finds comfort in vibing off a room full of people who are lost in abrasive textures and high octane rhythms. It is that industrial brand of techno which he has perfected over the years, not least on his new Perc Trax LP, A Low Level Love. It is his second full length after 2018's The Residue on Tresor and shows a marked evolution in his sound. While still defined by blistering drum patterns and caustic synths, there is also plenty of melody and introspection in the record. As much as it is a fresh look for him, it's a fresh sound for techno, too. 

On this week's podcast, the London based artist goes hard and fast. He pays homage to his love of grime with a blistering industrial rework of a Stormzy track which launches us into a world of distorted drums and tortured synths. The ensuing barrage of sound is coloured with everything from trance chords to club rhythms and lashings of acid. It's a full throttle mix that is always on the move, much like Manni Dee himself.

At the invitation of LACKREC and Magic Power in 2018, Berlin’s DJ Spit has surfaced as a new talent pushing a hybrid set of sounds. Geared toward drum and bass, techno and warehouse to drill and amen-infused breaks, Spit fills a gap between ghetto house and hi-tech industrial.
With beats making it to Spandau20, Possession and Pollerwiesen podcasts, other sets and appearances include Slam Radio and Lobster Theremin, to mixes for Rinse FM France and HÖR in Berlin. 
Booked for Berghain’s Säule, Endurance in Copenhagen and Kyiv’s ∄ - to raves in Armenia through London - Spit’s other spots online include a back-to-back set with VTSS (Q Club) and a session for Boiler Room at Leipzig’s Distillery.
Sending an unapologetic dive bomb into the contemporary fields of rave, Spit launched Rascal Records in 2021, and ahead of founding the Verteiler label, he’ll continue to blaze a trail to the very extremes of club music.

CcC (Jimi Oduntan) Born in Lagos, Nigeria (16.06.1995) and raised in Duisburg, Germany is a DJ and producer. At the age of twelve, inspired by German and American Hip Hop, he began his first steps in his musical career.
By discovering Dutch and German techno culture, he teamed up with a childhood friend between the ages of 15 and 17 and began to focus on his creative career. Always wandering between two worlds, playing at HipHop & trap Partys but also producing faster electronic music. With the early move to the capital (2015), he again dealt intensively with productions & rap. Several publications and live appearances followed. Through the intensive examination of the electronic music scene in Berlin, he discovered that the values and the lifestyle propagated by rap culture at that time were no longer compatible with his ideas. Then he started the electronic DJ & producer project CcC. Since the beginning of 2020 there have been 2 releases, Digital & Vinyl (Melt The Pot, U4E, “CcC - Pe Awon Olopaa (Don't) & Club Qu Sampler Vol. 1, CcC - Hectics)” on which he is already working alongside international greats such as Adiel, Orlando Voorn, Hector Oaks, Marcel Dettmann & Steffi. Despite the pandemic, he managed to increase his level of awareness through formats such as Arte Concert and Hör Berlin and is currently forming the record label/collective „VERTEILER“ with a group of creatives such as DJ Spit.
Focusing on fast-paced techno experimentations, his soundscape can be described as dark & twisted, yet dreamy and blissful. An ever spiralling, tippy ride down the rabbit hole of electronic music.

@theo-nasa is a purveyor of weird, animated, rough, melodramatic techno with supreme body catching patterns and sounds. An artist without any limits, Theo surrounds himself with all forms of music and takes inspiration from the deepest corners of Jungle/Drum & Bass, Grime, R&B, Rap, and Hip-Hop.

Around the time of 2009, Theo developed a love for house and electro as he was drawn to the esoteric, otherworldly soundscapes of the genres which inspired him to launch his renowned @aliensoundtrax label a few years later with an anthology of all things unordinary in electronic music.

Theo’s meticulously crafted yet eccentric productions first saw the light in 2013 on @mokujin-recordings before dropping an array of releases on his Alien Sound Trax imprint and his first-ever vinyl on Andy Blake’s World Unknown imprint in 2018 which sold out in Tokyo and Detroit within a few months.

A regular feature on UK airwaves over the years, Nasa’s music has been supported regularly on Rinse FM and in 2019 his ‘Amen Mayhem’ single received a play on Nastia’s BBC Radio 1 show amongst an assortment of heavyweight producers.

Beyond his productions, DJing and label curation, Theo can be found humorously reviewing unreleased tracks via his Instagram and Youtube pages, making him a truly vital asset not just in the electronic music world, but in the wider spectrum of internet entertainment.

With a constant passion that fuels Nasa’s interest in electronic music, Nasa is being guided by his refreshing, lighthearted approach to music and is certainly one to be treasured for years to come.
