“strange and beautiful sounds” - Drowned in Sound

As part of our unique Beer vs. Records project, the debut single from Edinburgh’s shimmering Magic Eye will be released on a bottle of Barney’s Red Rye beer. This is a copper-coloured ale with a crisp, toffee apple and fruity taste is made from two types of rye malt and German melanoidinmalz.

As part of a 4-pack of excellent beer from one of my favourite micro-breweries, this will be competing directly with Song, by Toad’s next split 12” - eight songs each, who can sell their run of 250 first. Both will go on sale on Record Store Day 2013, with the launch night held that evening, where both the beer and the records will be on sale, and all four bands will be playing - Magic Eye, Plastic Animals, Le Thug and Zed Penguin.

Magic Eye are a relatively new band, with only one cassette release to their name so far - the Shreddin’ on Heaven’s Floor tape from April last year. They play dream-pop with twinkly guitars, played with an almost glockenspiel-like quality, and clean, clear vocals. Whilst a lot less electronic, the impression can be one of a slightly more poker-faced Saint Etienne or Dubstar.

They are also one of those bands with about a million other things going on as well. Alex Johnston, for example, plays in Edinburgh School for the Deaf as well as a brand new band called Naked, who we’ll be telling you a little more about in the Summer.

The Zed Penguin Pale Ale and Le Thug Lager will be making their way to you in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, please enjoy!
