Massive release for you all this week from man like @donsurf - a name you may well recognise, having made an instant impact on the scene earlier this year with a first release on EC2A (alongside Bakey) that sold out almost instantly!

This track is a brilliantly wonky dancefloor destroyer, stylistically sitting somewhere between breaks & UKG (with notes of other influences too). It’s packed with twists & turns, with a really interesting structure that keeps the energy building throughout.

We’re honoured to have him on board, Charlie is a seriously impressive producer & just generally lovely guy who is bound to have big things coming. If you didn’t already know - now you do!

Witchdoctor is an emerging new talent on the UKG and Bass Music scene. Operating out of London, the DJ & Producer has been steadily carving a name out for himself in both genres, most recently with his wicked debut release on Hausmade.

Downplay is proud to present ‘6AM, the sophomore EP from London producer Witchdoctor.

‘Champagne’ kicks off proceedings with a fully feel-good vibe, staccato rhythms and good-time melodies mixing it up before the groove steps in properly. Sugar-sweet basslines and chopped vocals intersperse the track for a little ray of UKG sunshine that will put a smile on any raver’s face.

Title track ‘6AM’ takes another path entirely, with a low-slung 4X4 rhythm guiding the beat across chord washes and a rolling bassline that gives the production a full-on warehouse bumpy bubbler taste that’ll have the floor full in no time.

‘Wot U R’ mixes the best elements of both proceeding tracks into a perfect UKG concoction, saccharine melodies inter-playing tough beats to mesmerizing effect.

‘Vybe’ is pure summertime fun with an incredible lyrical turn from Steps AKA Steppa Style, delivering a pitch perfect salvo of MC nostalgia wrapped up in modern production savvy. The beat switches between 2-step speaker-shaker to 4x4 chest-rattler with ease, running through a whole trick bag of FX and percussive cuts that is 100% sunshine.

Rinse FM’s DJ Dappa delivers an outstanding remix on the digital flip, increasing the summer vibes with a take that includes sweet string samples and orchaestral stabs to devastating eﬀect. No danceﬂoor is going to be safe from this one!

Downplay is proud to welcome producers On1 & ZeroFG to the label for their first collaborative release.

‘Big Sound’ arrives in an ominous atmosphere, brooding chords swirling around a stripped-back 2-Step groove. Bubbling basslines provide the punch as the percussion gets an intensive workout.

‘Next Up’ raises the tempo and delivers a master-class in minimal funk as the rolling bass combines with a killer rhythm to get your head nodding and your feet moving.

‘Conform’ drops soulful vocal samples over an ever-evolving rhythm for an intriguing roll-out that extrapolates the classic UKG template and mutates it into something fresh and new.

Next up is Aversion, an equally eerie introduction in fine On1 style, subtly building sounds and energy pushing towards the climax which is the drop which makes for a bass heavy, head nodding, screw face pulling, gun finger pointing riddim! This track will make any dance floor shake to the foundations making it almost impossible not to skank to it!

Signal kicks off with a eerie tone, murky spaced out strings sit ontop of a bouncing high hat groove setting the tone. As the intro progresses more elements get introduced continuously pushing the track forward getting the listener more immersed and more curious about what is going to happen next, when almost out of nowhere the real build hammers in and without warning so does the gritty bass and skippy drums making this proper 2-step X grime hybrid making it a track that would sit well in a set with MC's as well on its own.
