Everyone knows that the food we buy is grown on thousands of farms across Europe. But how much do we know about the policies that shape our agriculture and ensure healthy food production? The 'Food for Europe' podcast brings you mini-series that discuss the EU's efforts to increase organic farmland and produce more organic food for Europeans.

Die Auswirkungen der Landwirtschaft auf die Umwelt gehören zu den umstrittensten Aspekten der Gemeinsamen Agrarpolitik. Die Europäische Union bewegt sich jedoch schrittweise in Richtung einer grüneren, nachhaltigeren Landwirtschaft, die Umweltaspekte berücksichtigt und wo Landwirte die Hauptrolle übernehmen um diesen Übergang zu ermöglichen.    

Die EU-Bürger wollen zunehmend wissen, woher ihre Lebensmittel stammen und wie sie produziert wurden. Nichtregierungsorganisationen und Umweltverbände bringen ihre Ansichten in die Debatte ein und überwachen die Umsetzung der Politik in den Mitgliedstaaten der EU. Die Landwirte betonen unterdessen, dass der Wandel kein Umbruch, sondern stetig und überschaubar sein muss.

Dieser neueste Podcast in der Reihe "Nahrung für Europa" befasst sich mit den umweltpolitischen Maßnahmen, die aus dem jüngsten Gesetzgebungsverfahren zur Reform der Gemeinsamen Agrarpolitik hervorgegangen sind.

Pour permettre à l’Union européenne d’atteindre la neutralité carbone à l’horizon 2050, le secteur agricole doit repenser ses pratiques. Concrètement, cela veut dire une gestion plus ciblée des parcelles et des sols, en matière de semis, mais aussi d’irrigation et d’intrants, de sorte de répondre sans excès aux besoins des cultures, pour un meilleur rendement dans le respect de la biodiversité et de l’environnement.

A travers l’Europe, de nombreux agriculteurs ont déjà intégré à leur quotidien les toutes dernières technologies numériques permettant d’exploiter les données des satellites de géolocalisation et d’observation de la Terre. Tous arrivent au même constat : la numérisation, couplée à des engins agricoles autonomes, leur permet de gagner du temps, de l’argent et d’économiser leurs efforts. 

L’Union européenne dispose d’une armada de satellites capables d’évaluer la composition des sols, l’état des cultures, et de planifier les interventions humaines en croisant les besoins précis en un point donné avec, notamment, les prévisions météorologiques. Par exemple, l’épandage sera déconseillé une veille d’orage, car les nappes phréatiques pourraient être contaminées par lessivage des cultures. Les technologies numériques réduisent ainsi l’impact des pratiques agricoles sur l’environnement.

C’est pourquoi la digitalisation de l’agriculture est un objectif transversal des grandes stratégies de l’Union européenne - Pacte vert, De la ferme à la table - et bien sûr de la politique agricole commune (PAC) nouvelle mouture, qui entrera en vigueur en 2023.

Consacré à la numérisation de l’agriculture, le dernier épisode du podcast « Nourrir l’Europe » vous emmène en Irlande, à la rencontre d’un agriculteur céréalier qui, grâce aux technologies numériques, a vu ses rendements augmenter, tout en consacrant moins de temps aux tâches répétitives dans ses champs. Un scientifique de l’Agence spatiale européenne vous parle de ses recherches pour pousser encore plus loin l’agriculture de précision, et une éleveuse estonienne férue de technologies explique comment elle s’assure du bien-être de ses animaux depuis son smartphone, à des centaines de kilomètres de sa ferme.

8. #Digital : Le numérique, bonne étoile de l’agriculteur

14. #Organic: EU Organic Awards

L'industrie européenne des engrais a été touchée de plein fouet ces dernières années : pendant et après l'épidémie de Covid en 2020, lorsque de nombreuses usines d'engrais ont dû fermer et ont eu du mal à relancer leur activité dans un contexte de hausse des coûts de l'énergie et des matières premières. Ensuite, la guerre en Ukraine a considérablement affecté les approvisionnements, non seulement en provenance d'Ukraine, mais aussi de la Russie et du Belarus voisins. Ces trois pays représentent environ un tiers des importations d'engrais de l'Europe.

Aujourd'hui, il s'agit d'une crise à part entière, les agriculteurs étant confrontés à une multiplication des prix par quatre dans certains cas. Beaucoup d'entre eux réduisent les apports d’engrais sur leurs terres, voire y renoncent, tout simplement. Cette situation menace à son tour les rendements de l'année prochaine et pourrait faire grimper encore plus les prix des denrées alimentaires.
 
Le 10 novembre, l'UE a dévoilé sa dernière réponse, annonçant des mesures supplémentaires pour aider les agriculteurs et le secteur. Et pas seulement en Europe, mais aussi dans d'autres régions du monde qui n'ont pas les moyens de subventionner ou d'indemniser les producteurs de l’agro-alimentaire et les fabricants d'engrais.

L’épisode 22 de « Nourrir l’Europe » se penche sur le dossier des engrais, à travers le regard de toutes les parties concernées : agricole, industrielle, scientifique et politique.

22. #Engrais : Réduire notre dépendance aux engrais

Bei den meisten von uns kommt europäisches Obst und Gemüse jeden Tag auf den Tisch. Und die Obst- und Gemüseproduktion der EU steht im Mittelpunkt ihrer Gemeinsamen Agrarpolitik: Sie ernährt die Europäer und wird weit über den Binnenmarkt hinaus exportiert.

23. #ObstundGemüse: Obst und Gemüse in Europa: Innovation, Tradition, Ernährung

There’s one guest that will have an honoured place at the tables of millions of Europeans in every member state this Christmas: geographical indications. These hallmarks of quality, authenticity and tradition are indelibly associated with the European gastronomic tradition. They reflect the food and drink heritage of a specific territory, and they give producers in that area the right to market their products under a registered name, provided those products respect the established criteria that define the product.

Geographical indications add value and commercial advantage to quality products, especially at Christmas – think Champagne, Cava and Prosecco, to name but three that will be savoured in millions of European homes over the festive season.

In this special Christmas edition, we’re looking at speciality food and drink from Germany and Hungary that benefit from GIs. Stroll with us around the beautiful Christmas market in Nuremberg to enjoy delicacies including the famous Nürnberger Glühwein, unique in the world. We also meet a fish farmer from Hungary whose carp, which benefit from a protected designation of origin, will grace many thousands of Christmas tables in central and eastern Europe.

At the Christmas market we meet Richard Balling,  who’s responsible for food quality policy at the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry, and Branka Tome, who oversees GIs at the European Commission’s DG AGRI.

25. #Geographicalindications: Protected local delicacies for Christmas!

Networking in agriculture, and in rural areas in general, is hardly talked about and the effects are difficult to measure. Nevertheless, in Europe's rural regions you meet farmers and entrepreneurs again and again who say: "Without networking, I wouldn't be where I am today".

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, DG AGRI, has therefore in 2022 launched the European CAP Network as a forum for the exchange of knowledge and information between national CAP networks, organisations, administrations, researchers, entrepreneurs and users in the fields of agriculture and rural policy.

This 47th episode of 'Food for Europe' begins with an interview with Antonia Gamez Moreno, Head of the Rural Areas and Networks Unit at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development. Three female entrepreneurs from rural areas report on the importance of networking for the development of their respective activities: Maria Elf, who promotes local production from her region in Sweden, Lidia Moroń-Morawaska, a beekeeper in Poland, and Helena Golden, a basket maker in Ireland.

47. Networking for rural women entrepreneurs

57 is the average age a European farmer. This figure is all the more alarming, according to specialists in the sector, because it keeps rising. If nothing changes, this means that in 10 years' time, more than half the farmers in the European Union will have retired. Ensuring the next generation of farmers is now a priority, and the raison d'être of the Youth Policy Dialogue launched in December - a series of meetings between the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, and representatives of young farmers and rural communities.

The 55th episode of Food for Europe looks back at the issues discussed at the second session of this dialogue, held in Brussels on 7 May, and at the conference on the Vision for European Agriculture and Food held the following day.

You will meet two young women farmers with contrasting views: Justine Poppe, who works on her parents' dairy farm, and Anne Van Leeuwen, an art historian who has turned to regenerative agriculture. Martin Siemen, a shipbuilding engineer and vice-president of the NGO Rural Youth Europe, talks about the importance of opening up the countryside to stem the rural exodus and make life easier for farmers. Finally, Commissioner Hansen takes stock of his discussions with young people on access to land and finance, and suggests possible solutions.

55. Youth dialogue: Facilitating access to agricultural careers

European wines enjoy a reputation for excellence throughout the world and provide 2.9 million jobs in the European Union. But in many regions, wine is much more than its market value - it's a heritage, the backbone of local identity. But now, with consumption at an all-time low, production costs soaring and the threat - sometimes existential - of climate change, the wine industry has its back up against the wall: to overcome the crisis, it is going to have to adapt. This is the theme of the 56th episode of our Food for Europe podcast.

The situation is complex, which is why the European Commission's response consists of a multitude of measures and aids that can be modulated according to the regional and national situation of the vineyard concerned.

We talk to Simone Loose, professor of business economics in the wine and drinks sector at the University of Geisenheim in Germany; Valentine Picant, co-owner and manager of Château Hostens-Picant, east of Bordeaux; Luca Rigotti, chairman of Copa-Cogeca's ‘Wine’ working group; and Lavinia Stan, market analyst in the wine sector at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development.

56. European wines: World class under pressure

Since July 1st of this year, Denmark has been holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union. In episode 58 of 'Food for Europe', we discuss Denmark's ambitious plan for the Presidency including wrapping up negotiations on the agricultural simplification package, efforts to make life easier for farmers, as well as promoting innovation, ensuring sustainability and competitiveness in the sector.
But the big story over the next few years around Danish farming will be the implementation of the Green Tripartite agreement, Denmark's firm plan to reduce carbon emissions. 
Of course, one size does not fit all in farming across the EU but can the Danish model for a sustainable future be an example for other states to follow in the future?

57. Denmark's plan for sustainable farming in Europe

Depuis le 1er juillet, le Danemark occupe la présidence tournante du Conseil de l'Union européenne. Le 58ème épisode de « Nourrir l’Europe » s’intéresse aux priorités du Danemark pour l’agriculture européenne, et se penche sur une agriculture danoise en plein tournant écologique.

Dans les années à venir, le pays de 6 millions d’habitants va en effet s’atteler à mettre en œuvre un plan ambitieux pour réduire les émissions carbonées du secteur agricole : l’accord vert tripartite. De quoi s’agit-il ? Comment a-t-il été possible de dégager un compromis dans un contexte où la compétitivité devient un impératif ? En quoi cette initiative danoise peut-elle inspirer les autres Etats-membres ?

Pour en débattre, « Nourrir l’Europe » donne la parole à Christian Orthmann Andersen, agriculteur danois et président de LandboUngdom, une organisation de jeunesse rurale, à Niels Peter Nørring, directeur climat du Conseil danois de l'agriculture et de l'alimentation qui représente tous les acteurs de la chaîne agro-alimentaire, ainsi qu’à Neda Skakelja, chef de l'unité chargée des États membres nordiques et baltes (Danemark, Suède, Finlande, Estonie, Lettonie et Lituanie) à la direction générale de l'agriculture et du développement rural de la Commission européenne.

58. Prix du bio : porter haut les couleurs de l’alimentation et de l’agriculture bio en Europe

C'est un sujet récurrent dans Nourrir l‘Europe : le mécontentement des agriculteurs face à la charge administrative. Au cœur du malaise : les longues heures consacrées à remplir des formulaires perçus parfois comme incompréhensibles, qui conditionnent l’obtention des subventions européennes.  Or ces aides sont devenues indispensables à la survie des exploitations dans un contexte où les prix des denrées agricoles ne couvrent pas toujours les coûts de production.

Le 59e épisode du podcast s‘intéresse aux solutions proposées par la Commission européenne pour faciliter la vie des agriculteurs. Ces solutions se présentent sous la forme d’un important train de mesures dit paquet de simplification, qui doit encore être approuvé par les autres institutions européennes.

Pour nous expliquer le contexte et le contenu du paquet de simplification, nous avons tendu notre micro à Carl Ljungqvist, un jeune éleveur suédois, aux conseillers agricoles Lovisa Filipsson en Suède et John Greaney en Irlande et à Bence Mayor, chef adjoint de l'unité « Durabilité économique » à la Direction générale de l’Agriculture et du développement rural de la Commission européenne.

Regular listeners will be familiar with the frustrations that European farmers face, trying to comply with the rules and regulations of the Common Agricultural Policy. In Episode 59 of "Food for Europe," we discuss the plans underway to simplify those rules and regulations and help farmers get their subsidy payments earlier.

At this stage, however, the plan is still a work in progress. For the package to take effect, it must first be approved by other EU institutions – such as the European Parliament and the Council.

59. Simplifying the Common Agricultural Policy

Es kommt bei 'Nahrung für Europa' immer wieder zur Sprache: die Unzufriedenheit der Landwirte mit dem Verwaltungsaufwand: die Stunden, die sie damit verbringen, Formulare auszufüllen und Subventionen zu beantragen – ohne die sie angesichts der niedrigen Preise für landwirtschaftliche Erzeugnisse nicht überleben könnten –, die Unsicherheit hinsichtlich der Zahlungen und auch die aus ihrer Sicht oft unverständlichen Vorschriften…

In dieser 59. Folge des Podcasts geht es um die Antwort der Europäischen Kommission auf diese Unzufriedenheit: das Vereinfachungspaket, das darauf abzielt, die Arbeit der Landwirte zu erleichtern. Das Paket liegt auf dem Tisch, derzeit handelt es sich um einen Vorschlag der Kommission, der noch von den anderen europäischen Institutionen genehmigt werden muss.

Um uns die Hintergründe und den Inhalt des Vereinfachungspakets zu erklären, haben wir mit Bence Mayor von der DG Agri gesprochen, mit dem jungen Landwirt Carl Ljungqvist, aus Jönköping in Südschweden, sowie mit den Landwirtschaftsberatern Lovisa Filipsson (Jönköping) und John Greaney (Dublin, Irland).

59. Simplere Regeln und Vorschriften: das EU-Vereinfachungspaket

A l’occasion du lancement, par la Commission européenne, d’une nouvelle stratégie pour susciter des vocations dans l’agriculture, Nourrir l’Europe consacre son 60ème épisode à la question du renouvellement générationnel dans le secteur. Il y a urgence : alors que l’âge moyen des agriculteurs est de 57 ans dans l’UE, la relève n’est, à ce jour, pas assurée. Au cœur du problème pour les jeunes : l’accès au foncier et aux financements. Trouver des solutions est fondamental pour notre sécurité alimentaire et la préservation de nos campagnes.

Nous vous emmenons en Irlande à découverte du Service de mobilité foncière (Land Mobility Service), qui met en relation des jeunes sans terre et des agriculteurs plus âgés qui souhaitent lever le pied, afin de les faire travailler ensemble. Chris Cahill, jeune agriculteur élu jeune éleveur de l’année en 2024, et Tony McCormack, propriétaire exploitant, nous parlent de leur partenariat réussi dans l’élevage laitier. Patrick Brady, leur conseiller du Land Mobility Service, nous explique les tenants et les aboutissants de sa mission.

Ruth Fennell, conseillère spécialisée dans l’agriculture collaborative à l’Autorité irlandaise de développement de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation, Teagasc, nous expose le contexte irlandais et les autres pistes explorées pour faciliter l’installation des jeunes.

Enfin, Sandra Sanmartin, chargée de mission au sein de l'unité « durabilité sociale » de la Direction générale de l’agriculture et du développement rural de la Commission européenne, évoque les grandes lignes de la nouvelle stratégie visant à rendre les professions agricoles plus attrayantes.

60. Renouvellement générationnel : assurer l’avenir de l’agriculture européenne

The average age of a farmer in the European Union is almost 60. The task of generational renewal – ensuring younger farmers take up the profession to ensure continuity – is therefore among the most urgent priorities of the Common Agricultural Policy.

It’s not only a question of maintaining food production, important though that is. It’s also about caring for Europe’s unique landscapes and nurturing its rural heritage. Farming is deeply intertwined with Europe’s history, culture and society, and every time a farmer leaves the land, we lose a piece of our identity as Europeans.

For episode 60 of Food for Europe, we have travelled to Ireland to discover more about the challenges and opportunities of generational renewal in a country whose economy depends on high-value, high-quality food products for export. We meet Irish Young Farmer of the Year 2024, Chris Cahill, who has entered into a farm partnership with an older farmer, Tony McCormack.

Tony’s lack of succession options led him to consider a partnership arrangement, and it’s working well – with Tony providing the land and experience, and Chris bringing technical excellence and innovation to the farm’s expanding operations.

We also talk to Patrick Brady from the Land Mobility Service and its work to promote generational renewal through mutually beneficial arrangements that ensure young farmers have the resources they need to move forward. And we meet Ruth Fennell, an adviser with Teagasc, a farm advisory service that is driving new initiatives that deliver solutions to support young farmers and their dreams of making a living from the land.

60. Generational renewal: central to Europe’s farming future

Das Durchschnittsalter der Landwirte in der Europäischen Union liegt bei fast 60 Jahren. Der Generationswechsel – also dafür zu sorgen, dass jüngere Landwirte den Beruf ergreifen, um die Kontinuität zu gewährleisten – gehört daher zu den dringendsten Prioritäten der Gemeinsamen Agrarpolitik.

Es geht nicht nur darum, die Lebensmittelproduktion aufrechtzuerhalten, so wichtig dies auch ist. Es geht auch darum, die einzigartigen Landschaften Europas zu pflegen und sein ländliches Erbe zu bewahren. Die Landwirtschaft ist eng mit der Geschichte, Kultur und Gesellschaft Europas verflochten, und jedes Mal, wenn ein Landwirt aufhört, verlieren wir ein Stück unserer Identität als Europäer.

Für Folge 60 von 'Nahrung für Europa' sind wir nach Irland gereist, um mehr über die Herausforderungen und Chancen des Generationswechsels in einem Land zu erfahren, dessen Wirtschaft von qualitativ hochwertigen Lebensmitteln für den Export abhängt. Wir treffen den irischen Junglandwirt des Jahres 2024, Chris Cahill, der eine Partnerschaft mit einem älteren Landwirt, Tony McCormack, eingegangen ist.

Da Tony keine Nachfolgemöglichkeiten hatte, entschied er sich für eine Partnerschaft, die gut funktioniert: Tony stellt das Land und seine Erfahrung zur Verfügung, während Chris technische Kompetenz und Innovationskraft in den expandierenden Betrieb einbringt.

Wir sprechen auch mit Patrick Brady vom Land Mobility Service über dessen Arbeit zur Förderung des Generationswechsels durch für beide Seiten vorteilhafte Vereinbarungen, die sicherstellen, dass junge Landwirte über die Ressourcen verfügen, die sie benötigen, um voranzukommen. Und wir treffen Ruth Fennell, Beraterin bei Teagasc, einem landwirtschaftlichen Beratungsdienst, der Lösungen anbietet, zur Unterstützung junger Landwirte und ihres Traums, ihren Lebensunterhalt mit der Landwirtschaft zu verdienen.

60. Generationswechsel: entscheidend für die Zukunft der Landwirtschaft in Europa

Le 61ème épisode de Nourrir l’Europe revient sur la conférence du 17 octobre qui a réuni à Bruxelles tous les acteurs du Réseau d’information comptable agricole, le RICA. L’occasion de fêter les 60 ans du réseau mais aussi de se tourner vers l’avenir avec l’évolution du RICA en Réseau d’information sur la durabilité économique des exploitations agricoles ou RIDEA.

Si la base de données comptables a joué un rôle capital pour évaluer l’impact des politiques agricoles et les ajuster, elle a aussi permis aux agriculteurs d’avoir une vue d’ensemble de leur gestion. Quant au monde académique, on ne compte plus les travaux de recherche rendus possibles par ces données de terrain communes à tous les États-membres. En intégrant des données environnementales et sociales, le RIDEA veut refléter l’évolution récente de la Politique agricole commune. Seuls les agriculteurs qui se porteront volontaires seront sollicités.

Pour bien comprendre la valeur ajoutée du RICA et du RIDEA, Nourrir l’Europe a tendu son micro, dans les allées de la conférence, à Patrizia Engelhart-Getzinger, une jeune agricultrice autrichienne qui alimente le réseau en données depuis des années. Katre Kirt, qui dirige l’unité RICA/RIDEA au Centre estonien de recherche et de connaissances rurales, nous parle des défis rencontrés par les collecteurs de données dans son pays. Alessandra Kirsch, ingénieure agronome et docteure en économie et politique agricole en France, nous explique comment le RICA a alimenté ses travaux de recherche, encore utiles aujourd’hui à la Commission européenne. 

Enfin, Bence Tóth, chef adjoint de l’unité Analyse et Perspectives de la direction générale de l’agriculture et du développement rural de la Commission européenne explique le calendrier de mise en place du RIDEA et répond aux questions soulevées par les autres invités du podcast.

61. RIDEA : une vision à 360° sur la durabilité économique agricole

The 61st episode of Food for Europe looks back at the conference held on 17 October 2025 in Brussels that brought together all the players in the Farm Accountancy Data Network, FADN. 

It was an opportunity to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the network but also to look to the future with the evolution of the FADN into Farm Sustainability Data Network (FSDN). While the accounting database has played a key role in assessing the impact of agricultural policies and adjusting them, it has also provided farmers with a better understanding of the management of these policies.

As for the academic world, there are countless research works made possible by this field data that is made available across all Member States. By integrating environmental and social data, the FSDN aims to reflect the impact of recent developments in the Common Agricultural Policy and shape its evolution in the future. Only farmers who volunteer will be involved. 

To fully understand the added value of FADN and FSDN, Food for Europe spoke on the fringes of the conference to Patrizia Engelhart-Getzinger, a young Austrian farmer who has been feeding the network with data for years. Katre Kirt, who heads the FADN/FSDN unit at the Estonian Centre for Rural Research and Knowledge, talks about the challenges faced by data collectors in her country. Alessandra Kirsch, an agricultural engineer with a PhD in agricultural economics and policy in France, explains how the FADN has fuelled her research, which is still useful to the European Commission today. Finally, Bence Tóth, deputy head of unit for analysis and outlook of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, explains the timeline for the implementation of FSDN and expands on issues raised by the other podcast guests.

61. A sustainable farming economy: the added value of data networking

Die 61. Folge von 'Nahrung für Europa' befasst sich mit der INLB/FSDN-Konferenz, die im Oktober alle Akteure des Informationsnetzes landwirtschaftlicher Buchführungen (INLB) in Brüssel zusammengebracht hat. Es war eine Gelegenheit, das 60-jährige Bestehen des Netzwerks zu feiern, aber auch einen Blick in die Zukunft zu werfen, da sich das INLB zum Informationsnetzwerk zur wirtschaftlichen Nachhaltigkeit landwirtschaftlicher Betriebe (FSDN) weiterentwickelt.
Die Buchhaltungsdatenbank spielte nicht nur eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Bewertung der Auswirkungen der Agrarpolitik und deren Anpassung, sondern ermöglichte den Landwirten auch einen Überblick über ihre Betriebsführung. Im Bereich der Wissenschaft gibt es unzählige Forschungsarbeiten, die durch die im Netzwerk in allen Mitgliedstaaten erhobenen Daten ermöglicht wurden. Durch die Einbeziehung von Umwelt- und Sozialdaten spiegelt das FSDN die jüngsten Entwicklungen der Gemeinsamen Agrarpolitik sehr genau wider. Es werden nur Landwirte befragt, die sich freiwillig dazu bereit erklären.
Um den Mehrwert von INLB und FSDN besser zu verstehen, hat 'Nahrung für Europa' auf der Konferenz Patrizia Engelhart-Getzinger, eine junge österreichische Landwirtin, die das Netzwerk seit Jahren mit Daten versorgt, interviewt. Katre Kirt, Leiterin der Abteilung INLB/FSDN am Estnischen Zentrum für ländliche Forschung und Wissen, berichtet über die Herausforderungen, denen sich die Datenerfasser in ihrem Land gegenübersehen. 61. Wirtschaftliche Nachhaltigkeit in der Landwirtschaft: der Nutzen des Datennetzwerks INLB/FSDN

Die Europäische Union ist einer der weltweit größten Getreideproduzenten. Seit drei Jahren jedoch befindet sich der Sektor in einer Zwickmühle zwischen Tiefstpreisen auf volatilen internationalen Märkten und steigenden Produktionskosten. Ganz zu schweigen von den Auswirkungen der Klimakatastrophe auf die Erträge.

Wie geht es den Getreidebauern heute? Wie sehen die Aussichten für europäisches Getreide aus? Antworten auf diese Fragen gibt es in dieser 62. Folge von 'Nahrung für Europa'.

Eric Thiroin, französischer Getreidebauer und Vorsitzender der Association générale des producteurs de blé (Allgemeiner Verband der Weizenproduzenten), berichtet über die Verschlechterung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und der Stimmung in der Branche in der Europäischen Union seit Beginn des Krieges in der Ukraine. Guillaume Jacquemin, Getreidezüchter am Wallonischen Agarforschungszentrum, erklärt, wie in der EU neue Getreidesorten gezüchtet werden, die gegen Klimaveränderungen resistent sind. Und Philippe Mitko, Leiter der Abteilung für Außenbeziehungen bei der französischen Getreidehandelsgrupp Soufflet Négoce by InVivo, analysiert, was genau die Getreidepreise auf den internationalen Märkten bestimmt und inwiefern die europäischen Erzeuger den Wechselkursschwankungen ausgesetzt sind. Schließlich berichtet Justyna Wrobel, Leiterin des Teams für Getreide, Ölsaaten, Hülsenfrüchte und Reis in der Abteilung Ackerkulturen der Generaldirektion Landwirtschaft und ländliche Entwicklung der Europäischen Kommission, über die Art der Unterstützung, die die Gemeinsame Agrarpolitik den europäischen Getreidebauern in dieser schwierigen Zeit gewährt, und über die geplanten Maßnahmen zur Stärkung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit des Sektors.

The European Union is one of the world's largest producers of cereals. But for the past three years, the sector has been caught between low prices on volatile international markets and rising production costs, not to mention the impact of climate change on yields. How are cereal farmers doing today? What is the outlook for European cereals? 

The 62nd episode of Food for Europe attempts to answer these questions. Eric Thirouin, a French cereal farmer and president of the General Association of Wheat Producers, reports on the deterioration in the competitiveness and morale of the profession in the European Union since the start of the war in Ukraine. Guillaume Jacquemin, cereal breeder at the Agricultural Research Centre of Wallonia, explains how new varieties of cereals that are resistant to climate change are being created. And Philippe Mitko, head of external relations at Soufflet Négoce by InVivo, tells us about the factors that determine the prices of cereals on international markets and the exposure of European producers to exchange-rate fluctuations. Finally, Justyna Wrobel, who heads the cereals, oilseeds, pulses and rice team in the Arable Crops Unit of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, discusses the nature of the support provided by the Common Agricultural Policy to European cereal producers in this difficult period, and the ways in which the sector's competitiveness can be strengthened.

62. European cereal producers: returning to competitiveness

Parasites, maladies, tempêtes, et bien sûr, incendies : impossible d’ignorer les feux de forêt dévastateurs qui dévorent le sud de l’Europe chaque été. Comment se portent les forêts européennes aujourd’hui ? Comment les protéger et les réparer ?

Forests are an economic and ecological wealth that are directly impacted by many threats: global warming, parasites, diseases, storms and of course, fires. It is impossible to ignore the devastating fires that ravage the forests of southern Europe every summer. How are European forests doing today? How can they be protected and repaired?

In the 63rd episode of Food for Europe we take you to Portugal, where Jorge Brito, executive secretary of the Coimbra region, looks back at the measures put in place to regenerate the forest ravaged by deadly fires in 2017 and ensure the protection of the population. Pierre Hermans, forester and founder of the private firm Sylva Nova, explains how he integrates global warming into the solutions he offers to his clients across Europe. Finally, Jérémie Crespin, policy officer at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, a specialist in forests, discusses the state of European forests and the role of the Common Agricultural Policy to prevent forest fires.

Die dreitägige Veranstaltung, an der Akteure aus den Bereichen Landwirtschaft und Ernährung, darunter Landwirte, Vertreter von Zivilgesellschaft, Wissenschaft und Politik, teilnehmen, ist ein jährliches Forum auf dem die neuesten politischen Trends, Herausforderungen und Chancen im Agrar- und Ernährungssektor der EU diskutiert werden.

Der erste Tag war der Ernährungssicherheit gewidmet – und den notwendigen Schritten zur Stärkung der Widerstandsfähigkeit des Agrar- und Ernährungssektors. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt lag auf der Frage, wie Forschung und Innovation die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit verbessern und wie nachhaltige landwirtschaftliche Praktiken helfen können, die gegenwärtigen klimatischen und ökologischen Herausforderungen zu meistern.

Mit dabei waren der deutsche Bio-Milchbauer Felix Riecken, der Wissenschaftler Yann de Mey, der Bio-Unternehmer Lubomir Nokov, die Vertreterin der Junglandwirte Katharina Schobersberger und Barthélemy Lanos von der Europäischen Kommission.

64. Agri-Food Days 2025: Ernährungssicherheit im Fokus

Ensuring food security across the EU is a priority for the current Common Agricultural Policy and the proposed new CAP. For our 64th episode of Food for Europe, we report from day one of the Agri Food Days 2025.

This three-day event — encompassing agriculture and food stakeholders, including farmers civil society, academia and policymakers — is an annual forum to deepen and broaden discussions about the latest policy trends, challenges and opportunities in the EU agri-food sector.

Day one was dedicated to in-depth discussions about food security and the steps necessary to support the resilience of the agri-food sector. There was also a strong focus on the ways in which research and innovation enhance competitiveness, and how sustainable farming practices can help in adapting to climate and environmental challenges.

The programme includes contributions from German regenerative dairy farmer Felix Riecken, academic Yann de Mey, organic entrepreneur Lubomir Nokov, young farmers’ representative Katharina Schobersberger and European Commission official Barthélemy Lanos.

64. Agri-Food Days 2025: focus on food security

Du 15 au 17 décembre 2025, Bruxelles accueillait la troisième édition des EU Agri-Food Days, comprenez les Journées européennes de l’agroalimentaire. Trois jours au cours desquels tous les acteurs du secteur - agriculteurs,  distributeurs, consommateurs, décideurs politiques, ou encore universitaires – ont pu échanger sur les dernières orientations politiques, les défis et les opportunités à saisir.

La première journée de l’événement était consacrée à la sécurité alimentaire de l’Union européenne, une priorité de la Politique agricole commune. Un thème que nous avons choisi d’approfondir dans le 64e épisode de Nourrir l’Europe.

Au fil du podcast, Barthélemy Lanos, de la Direction générale de l’agriculture et du développement rural de la Commission européenne, revient sur les instruments et mécanismes disponibles pour assurer la sécurité alimentaire de l’UE. Felix Riecken, éleveur laitier en Allemagne, nous parle des vertus de l’agriculture régénératrice qu’il pratique, pour plus de résilience face au changement climatique. Yann de Mey, universitaire néerlandais, évoque la récente mutation des risques pour notre sécurité alimentaire et ses implications politiques, à savoir la montée en puissance de la notion de souveraineté alimentaire. Venu de Bulgarie, Lubomir Nokov, entrepreneur dans le secteur biologique, partage ses convictions sur le potentiel de l’agriculture bio, et Katharina Schobersberger, représentante des jeunes agriculteurs, appelle à des actions fortes pour stimuler le renouvellement générationnel.
