At the height of the Covid-19 lockdown, A-Trak had a musical epiphany. Stuck at home experimenting, he remembered he had a broken E-Mu SP1200 in storage that he’d been meaning to fix for over 10 years. The mythical drum machine with a gritty 12-bit sound was the weapon of choice for so many of the producers who shaped A-Trak’s ear: from Pete Rock to Madlib, from DJ Muggs to Kenny Dope, from Todd Terry to Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon. After a chance repair job, Trizzy taught himself how to use the rare SP, chopped up everything in sight and quickly churned out the rawest house beats he’s ever made. The result is a two-part EP of uptempo head-nodders, stripped down and named after the notoriously short sample time of his new toy. Best served dirty and loud.

This is the stuff DJ dreams are made of. When A-Trak released his 10 Seconds Vol. 1 EP, a project made entirely on the SP1200 drum machine, French legends Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon were immediately drawn to it. Of course those two are no strangers to that sampler. The Daft Punk and Stardust affiliates made many of their early-2000s classics on the SP. Braxe + Falcon were in the middle of releasing their own (fantastic) collaborative project, too. A conversation started, stems were exchanged, and within a few days this incredibly funky remix landed in Trizzy’s inbox. The French Touch is alive and well!

Danny Brown's "Smokin & Drinkin" first appeared on his critically-acclaimed album Old as the debauched peak of Side B, and has since become a staple of his live shows and a true fan favorite. So it's only right that Danny's anthem (produced by Fool's Gold captain A-Trak and JMIKE) gets a summer single of its own, complete with remixes from some of electronic music's biggest names and wildest upstarts. 

Boys Noize strikes first with a frantic blend of breakbeats and rave stabs, while FG newcomer TroyBoi turns in a technicolor trap masterpiece. Jack Beats slow "Smokin" down to a late-night acid house stomp, and Jersey club king DJ Sliink closes the party with a heavy dose of basement bass.
