O my dear heart, sit with the one
who draws knowledge straight from the heart;
and only go beneath that tree
that always has fresh-blooming buds.

Do not meander aimlessly
among these perfume-merchants' stalls;
but dwell instead within the shop
of one who has sugar in stock.

Unless you have your own true scale,
you'll be quick prey to any thief - 
he'll fashion lovely forgeries,
and you'll believe that they are gold.

The thief will seat you by the door,
and say that he will soon return;
but don't keep waiting at the door - 
remember" the house has two doors.

Don't bring your bowl and meekly sit
by each and every boiling pot;
for each and every boiling pot
conceals yet something else inside.

Not every cane is sugar-filled;
not every low precedes a high;
not ever eye can truly see;
not every ocean has its pearl.

O nightingale, do sing your song;
and rest assured that drunken songs
among hard stones and granite rocks
do leave a mark, do leave a mark.

If you don't fit, then give your head - 
for if the thread declines to pass
within the needle's narrow eye,
it is because it has a head.

This wakened heart's your guiding light-
conceal it well beneath your robe,
and travel through these winds and airs
so full of turmoil and decay.

when you've passed through those gusty winds,
you'll dwell beside the water's source,
and find a mate who shares your breath
and drinks from that life-giving spring.

And when that water circulates,
you're like a tree that's ever-green
and always bears the freshest fruits -
it journeys deep into the heart.
