Their mission is to share the spirit of Christmas with those in need through a collaborative community wide effort. Now in their 33rd year, they serve up to 1,000 families every year in Wexford and Missaukee Counties with gifts and a meal around the holiday season.

It’s only March, but 2022 has already proven to be an extremely busy year for the Cherryland Humane Society.

Everything changed completely for volunteers at the nonprofit in January when they took in over 160 dogs at once from a home in East Bay Township.

This proved to be one of the single largest animal seizures in Grand Traverse County Animal Control history. Nearly two months later and the neglected dogs are finally finding their forever homes.

We are finally into May, a time when many people are looking to move.

Affordable housing is already an ongoing issue here in Northern Michigan and the prices of some utilities, such as heat, can cause even more of a financial burden on families. The Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency in Traverse City wants to help alleviate some of that stress. They were recently awarded a grant for the Home Heating Tax Credit.

This is the fourth year for the Community Development Fellowship program. Ten communities across the state are getting financial support to hire an extra employee to help with growth and development.
