Peel Dream Magazine is the nom de plume of New York City-based musician Joe Stevens. A nod to BBC Radio 1 legend John Peel, arbiter of all things underground, Peel Dream Magazine is highly evocative of a certain strain of independent music. As Stevens explains, “I wanted to create an outlet for subcultural wanderers. Something you can subscribe to."

Stevens harkens back to the early 1990s, when The Velvet Underground resurged as an inspiration to a new set of bands wielding synthesizers, off-set guitars, and a political bent. The Peel Dream experience is defined by a gentle, fuzzy psychedelia —it’s a hypnotic bit of mod-ish lo-fi pop, recalling the best of early Stereolab, Lilys, and other shaggy haired kids with vintage fuzz pedals, slim trousers, and good record collections. Stevens conjures a distinctly 90s vision of the 60s. Not the actual 60s, mind you, but perhaps a 60s daydreamed about from the creature comforts of a suburban living room. An abstraction. Shag carpet turned to bowl cut. Jean jackets — disaffected but wholesome youth. It's not irony, exactly. It's the love that comes from loving. And a bit of whimsy. It's the 90s, again. Post-post.

Written and recorded over a four-week period in the fall of 2017, Peel Dream Magazine’s debut album "Modern Meta Physic" fixates on the New Age universe of the Catskills region of New York. Stevens deals in generic bohemian fare — Far East philosophy, Native American tradition, mid-century modern cool — as he appraises the world according to privileged urban expats who increasingly call the upstate paradise home.

Leading off the album, "Qi Velocity" is a metronomic take on French pop that yields to a lush chorus reminiscent of Belle and Sebastian. “Deetjen’s," named after the much-loved bed & breakfast in Big Sur, would fit snugly on Unrest's best Teen Beat material. "Due to Advances in Modern Tourism" displays a soft take on Neu!, while the organ that enters could be a sly wink to Steve Reich's "Four Organs.” There is an economy to these tracks — everything is distilled down to it’s essential elements, no gestures are wasted, no superfluous ornamentation taking up space.

While Stevens is more than happy to show his influences on his sleeve — mind you, they're great influences — it's clear Peel Dream Magazine isn't just a “sound." The guy can write songs. Where he goes next is anybody's guess.

Over the course of five stellar albums, Papercuts' Jason Quever has shown himself to be a top-notch song-writer and producer, equally at home with lush, baroque textures and more stripped-down arrangements. His skill in the studio has helped him build-up an enviable resumé recording, producing and playing with artists including Luna, Beach House, Cass McCombs, Dean Wareham/Dean & Britta and Slumberland's own The Mantles.

Papercuts' new album "Parallel Universe Blues" reflects Quever's recent move from long-time musical home San Francisco to Los Angeles and all of the searching and self-exploration that accompanies leaving your home, your friends and your scene. The sound is intimate and close, nicely balancing the sonic concerns of the last few Papercuts records. The opening pair of songs "Mattress On The Floor" and Laughing Man" superbly sets the table for the rest of the album: perfect Spectorian pop songs echoed down through The Velvet Underground, LA's Paisley Underground, Spiritualized and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

"How To Quit Smoking" is a wry bit of self-examination, fueled by some gorgeous guitar melodies and a terrific chorus. "Sing To Me Candy" amps up the fuzz - distant peels of feedback blending into tape loops to create a Opal-esque atmosphere. "Clean Living" is another "jab at self improvement and who it's really for" that could fit right on on Nico's "Chelsea Girl." "All Along St Mary's" is an epic breakup song that would be right at home on The Jesus And Mary Chain's "Darklands" - ideal late night/rainy day vibes.

Never sacrificing song-writing for atmospherics, "Parallel Universe Blues" is a superb addition to the Papercuts catalog. Its themes of self-examination are as a timeless as the tunes themselves, the dreamy autumnal mood perfectly captured in the pastoral cover art. The album is a triumph and points to more great things in the future from Quever and Papercuts.

“Interdimensional Nonconversational Inconsequential Love” is about being a manager at a Best Buy and getting into an intensely pleasurable yet toxic interaction pattern with a customer whom you find yourself developing feelings for. Deep down you know it can never happen, but it’s right there in your face, the beautiful future you would clearly have together.  You might even get an inkling that they sense it too. But of course both of you know it’s impossible, and that if you were to realistically follow through with it the only conclusion would be the total annihilation of everyone involved. And this is the ultimate agony: a life dreamt of and partially tasted, but never fully lived. Perfect ecstasy, just out of reach. (In other words, the song is about being stuck in some kind of energetic lock with a person you’ll never actually be able to be with.) †

Interdimensional Nonconversational Inconsequential Love

With new album Twisted Crystal taking the place of most spun LP on the Bleep office stereo this week, @GuerillaToss have packaged together some scorching art-rock influences that fed into this latest run for @dfa-records. Bleep Mix #40 moves from a classic Serge Gainsbourg smoker into Kosmiche highflyers from La Dusseldorf and Cluster, before dropping in on Grace Jones, Aretha Franklin, Zazou, Bikaye and Cy 1 and even The Clash. To put it in plain words, it's a proper party-starting mix of pre-post-punk and funk as heard filtering through the sparkling studio wall of a group well attuned to the street sounds of electro, dub and new wave.
