I have actually lost the SuperCollider codes that I used for making the original track and I've for a long time used this reworked version that has organically been evolving throughout the years. I like it so much that I almost always play it live so I decided to release the track as a way of celebration :)

On PLASTISPHERE by FORCES, the radical treatment of its synthetic trance and EDM-aligned source material is best described as granular, microscopic or even atomic. Samples seem to pass through a fine razor and get rearranged into stuttering, stuck grooves of compound, assembled sound, into blasting kick sequences that stray far outside of the ordinary bpm spectrum, into frantic snippets of interrupted arpeggios, into metastable sound arrangements that seems just one bar away from total collapse into chaos. Far from just hectic, these provoking sounds operate in an environment of frozen grain washes, and what might have been huge euphoric trance climax chord progressions before get transformed into something closer to crunchy, shapeshifting electroplated textures, these transmutations powered by EDM-mangling supercollider code, almost like arcane plastic-gobbling bacteria.. This neatly ties into the conceptual focus of Plastisphere. The album situates itself in our current plastic ecological era, with its unprecedented hybrid ecosystems where new matter relations need to be formed with artificial detritus, where discarded xeno-materials are forced into coexisting somehow, with nominally inert but totally alien, omnipresent materials accumulating and dividing into microparticles until the always menacing collapse or revolution point.

The generative animation is programmed with Three.js library and with two different 3D models of Russian shipwrecks sunken in the Gulf of Finland in the 18th century. The Finnish Maritime Museum generously published those models online for free of use.

The whole album is inspired by the philosopher Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi’s 'Futurability' book and the way it deals with the systematic failure of Neo Liberal Capitalism and the current inability to resist it.  

The 'Chaosmosis' webpage project is a poetic rendering of the failing structures of current hegemony. The sunken imperialistic war and cargo ships of the Russian empire has of course political connotations of this current moment, but they can also be seen as more abstract remnants of the past. Disappearing and rotten forms.

Named after the mythological hybrid of the chimaera, Forces’ first collection for mappa was put together in a similar fashion. The sounds all stem from a fruitful residency at Stockholm’s EMS Elektronmusikstudion in May & June 2022, leading to a bounty of source material with which to build. The sounds and concept are equally chimeric, stringing together disparate and unintuitive jams, the music mimicking the multi-limbed, sewn together beasts of both creative open source coding and destructive multinational concerns who hide their cores amid endless appendages. Like Doctor Moreau, Forces - aka Finnish artist Joonas Siren - weaves wildly varying attributes into something new, from short-circuiting 8-bit dream ambience to fractured digital groans, drones, and noisy freakouts.

Though EMS is best known for its Buchla and Serge modular systems, Forces went ‘digital’ and largely navigated a lesser-known synth rack one can wheel between studios, affectionately known as the ‘90s Wagon’. “It housed different digital rack synth modules,” explains Siren, “ like the super unknown EVS-1 by Evolution Synthesis, a UK company who only produced this one rack synth only and then vanished.” Some truly alien sounds emerge from Forces’ creative misuse of forgotten 90s boxes and sampled modular jams. The result is an erratic trip through mismatched circuitry and digital codes, slipping between emotional artifice and harshly logical music.

The track titles stem from both famous mythological chimaeras and multinational arms dealing conglomerates. “Different quite sinister firms can operate in broad daylight, easily hiding their true nature. Many of these mega-corporations have different branches (like chimeric limbs) that are producing quite normal mundane every-day items, as well as mass-producing weapons.” A dedicated SuperCollider user too however, Siren states how open source coding snippets are also ‘chimeric beings’. “You end up always using some part of some old code and then building completely new work on some old idea,” Siren explains. Despite its misuses, there’s also something hopeful in the malleability of ideas, and the ability to creatively collage the world as it is into something wholly new, even better.

Ghost Nets (GEN022)

You see a robot dog standing on four legs in front of a man holding a long stick. The man tries violently to knock the robot off balance. The robots sways back and forth, still holding its ground. You feel empathy towards the thing, while nonetheless recognizing it as an artificial being. It’s uncanny. Perhaps it’s the lifelike movement of the robot that tricks our brain into recognizing it as a living thing.

The robot in question is a prototype of Boston Dynamics, one of worlds most advanced robotics manufacturers. The company has strong ties with the US military research institute DARPA. Thus, it’s very likely that some day they might be used to fight proxy wars and kill humans.

The ‘Dynamics’ album was conceived in early 2018. While making it I noticed that there was an underlying theme of “robot-ness” in the tracks. Writing SuperCollider code that produced strange interlocking kick drums, shifting temporally almost in an autonomous manner, I felt that this is dance music better suited for artificial beings than humans.

The robots of Boston Dynamics came to mind. I named the tracks after the prototypes of the manufacturer and started to wonder, why can’t we make robots to rave and dance instead of fight our wars? Why is it that that the advancement of technology is often left to the military-industrial complex? Rather than producing killing machines, maybe we could produce robots simply because we can.

In 2012 there was a survey of the US public that asked the question: “Do scientists believe that Earth is getting warmer because of human activity?” Out of the people chosen for the questionnaire 43% replied no and another 12% didn’t know. Only 45% accurately answered yes.

One reason for this uncertainty is the continuous and ongoing media saturation of falsified information regarding climate change. This is done by shadowy institutes, committees, foundations and even departments inside universities that largely operate with funding from conservative oil and fossil fuel millionaires like the infamous Koch brothers. These pseudo-scientific institutions have been successful undermining the genuine research into climate change.

The environmental organization Greenpeace maintains an archive of these institutions and all the track titles of Forces’ “Climate Denial Machine” album are derived from there. The album was made after Summer ‘18, when record high temperatures were measured around the Globe – yet an another worrying sign of anthropogenic climate change.

Soundwise, the album should not to be taken as a literal sonification of a dystopian future, where the Earth is left barren and destroyed, or of a shiny utopian future, where technology has solved the climate crisis. Rather, it’s a collection of tracks that operate independently in many different levels of sonic experimentation. The sometimes mellow, sometimes harsh sounds form futures that are not binary, but shifting in tonalities and narratives.

The undisputed reality is that we need to recognize the influence of the people and institutions hijacking the scientific discourse of climate change for their own benefits. The album is dedicated to raise that awareness.

We present you with the compilation created thanks to the cooperation of Oramics collective and the person behind New York Haunted label - Drvg Cvltvre. All proceeds from the digital sales will support Polish queer organizations: Kampania Przeciw Homofobii and Miłość Nie Wyklucza, who monitor homophobia, provide all kind of support for queer people and have agreed to help us redistribute the proceeds throughout LGBTQIA+ organizations in smaller cities and towns of Poland, who need them the most.

Among the supporters of our action, you will find international headliners, underground stars, beginners, heroes from our local scene in Poland and music from the members of Oramics collective.

In recent years, we have observed an evolving campaign of homophobia run by the right-wing Polish government, spread by the government media and fueled by the Catholic Church. We have heard that the LGBTQIA+ community is a plague, a dangerous ideology, a threat to morality and Polish culture and should be fought with fire. These words caused an eruption of violence, e.g. recent pogrom-like attacks on a Pride march in Białystok and targeting queer people on the streets as well as their allies wearing rainbow symbols. This atmosphere of disrespect, violence and hate leads many Polish queer people to depression, migration or even suicide.
The electronic music scene in Poland has recently taken a stand and many initiatives, festivals, collectives and clubs declared their solidarity and support. We want to take it further and do what we do best: share our passion for music and creating spaces where we can all feel free and at home. Music, art and the club scene are all parts of culture which is not and cannot be indifferent to historical and social turmoils or political oppression. Quite the contrary, it has always been the voice of resistance. Club culture is something more than hedonistic sounds letting you forget about your everyday life, it is something more than a way to make money - it is a tool that can help other people. Apart from the fundraiser party at Jasna 1 on August 9th 2019, we present you with the compilation “TOTAL SOLIDARITY” created thanks to the cooperation of Oramics collective and the person behind New York Haunted label - Drvg Cvltvre. FULLSCREEN by FAUSTO MERCIER is, as the title hints at, a deeply immersive and undeniably full spectrum endeavor. With relentless showerings of razor-sharp kicks, precision-timed laser pulses and rubbery squeals, the overall construction is in the first place liquid, with individual sound objects having a flexible, plastic quality to them. Sprinkled with stammering synth stabs, these tracks distill something infectiously clubby out of a boiling stew of high impact smeared bass hits, zooming metallic clangs and THX®-reminiscent sonorous light beams. Juicy, bubbling percussion on one hand confirms the radical malleability both grid and frame but paradoxically also leads to a heightened perception of a precision in arrangement, no doubt further cemented by the ultra HD sound design approach sustained throughout.  Finally, the album is interspersed with a collection of spicy re-imaginings by Genot Centre associates, featuring a stroboscopic slicing masterclass by Forces, a no holds barred club killer by Ice_eyes and a full-range scanned mortal dissection by r.hunter.

Following Forces’ breakthrough string of acclaimed albums coming out on the key label triad of Bio Future Lab., Conditional & Genot Centre in 2018, we are now more than pleased to extend the output of the Finnish musician and multidisciplinary artist Joonas Siren with his next full-length 'Epoch':

"This is the epoch of uncertainties; of shifting and unreliable narratives, of rising temperatures and sea levels, of growing economic inequality, of increasing political polarization and far-right influence.

’Epoch’ is a testament of these disintegrating processes. It is also a narrative of my own struggles. The album was made during 2019, when I felt that my mental health was unraveling; panic attacks, anxiety and somatic pains left me almost paralyzed before I got some professional help.

My personal troubles can be seen as an indicator of the general political, ecological and social problems. There are many new studies, how the looming possibility of climate catastrophe is causing anxiety and mental health issues.

Besides the disastrous effects on climate change, late capitalism is also causing problems on a societal level. The job and social security is poor, especially for younger generations, which in turn generates even more distress, alienation and mental instability.

How to remain hopeful in this situation? Rather than reverting to abandoned nihilism, I believe in the force of grassroots activism. Not everybody has to be like Greta Thunberg, but her actions can be seen as an illustrious example, how you can actual make a difference.

The album maps out all these topical ideas sonically. Collapsing sound material, unsteady temporal structures, noise and distortion build up intensities without catharsis. The tracks are made with different live programming techniques, peculiar time-stretching and layering techniques and other VST and FX’s dysfunctions.

Within the mournful aural chaos, there is a potentiality for change."

We're running a pretty sexy label called glamour.

A few days ago our friend survived a major accident and he ended up being paralyzed from the waist down. He'd been in a coma for two weeks, woke up and doctors said he won’t walk anymore. He created a fundraising page (zrzutka.pl/s33zx9) so we decided to help him raise the money for everything by making a charity compilation that we would release on glamour’s bandcamp.
We wanted to ask, if maybe you (or any befriended musical project you know) would like (and could of course!) to be featured in such a compilation? For now, we have 70 confirmed artists (including galen tipton, John Object, Dmitri Mazurov etc.), many more to come.

Peramen! A Compilation for Belarus

“Change! Our hearts demand it. Change! Our eyes demand it”, sings Kino’s Viktor Tsoi in “Peremen”. This song may now be heard on the streets of not just Minsk and Grodno, but also Babruysk, Brest, Gomel, Mogilev, Pinsk, Vitebsk and what – at least to a foreign onlooker – looks like countless Belarussian cities and towns engulfed in protest. Following years of Alexander Lukashenko’s rule, another rigged election, omnipresent violence perpetrated by the state apparatus, censorship and draconian laws, the people have taken to the streets en masse. This is not the first time the Belarusians are out to protest, but the scale of these disturbances is unprecedented. Also unprecedented is the fact the rallies are led by women, who head the peaceful marches that have spread onto the streets of Belarus. All proceeds from Peramen! A Compilation for Belarus will go to #BY_help, a grassroots initiative offering aid to victims of repression, established on the wave of arrests that shook Belarus in March 2017. The funds will be used to pay fines, unlawful fees imposed for being held in detention, medical costs and lawyers.

The idea for the compilation was developed by Elena Sizova, Minsk-based DJ and producer. Peramen! A Compilation for Belarus was prepared with the help of the Radio Kapitał collective.
