👁Soca music is a hard genre to understand if you never experienced its context. The sound of soca is firmly tethered to the carnival experience; if you never experienced playing mas or sweating from hours of feteing, soca music may be hard for you to fall in love with.

👁Enter St. Lucia with their Dennery Segment (aka Lucian Kuduro) sound. Dennery Segment is a genre of underground St. Lucian music that fuses Soca with Angolan Kuduro and dancehall. Fast, minimalist, percussive, and gritty, Dennery Segment doesn't need anything but loud speakers to make sense... even when the lyrics are in kweyol.

👁ENTER G6 PRODUCTIONS. While Dennery Segment was pumpin strong at a wild 150+ bpm, G6 Productions made a commitment to slow down d dennery to 110 bpm... achieving a deep, dark and sexy signature sound that has become an important part of St. Lucia's artistic output.

Carnival is Black History: A Conversation (7p - 9p)
The Carnival is Black History panel featured an engaging conversation between Dr. Cathy Thomas and Adam “Foreigner” Cooper, delving into the expansive cultural, political, and historical significance of Carnival across the African diaspora. This dialogue explores how Carnival, born from resistance and reclamation, transcends borders—linking communities from Trinidad to Brazil, New Orleans to Haiti—each embodying distinct expressions of liberation, joy, and defiance.

About Dr. Cathy Thomas:
Dr. Cathy Thomas is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her work focuses on comparative studies of Black Carnivals across the African diaspora, with a particular emphasis on how Black women resist, show up, and dominate within Carnival spaces. Using autoethnographic approaches, her work connects the threads between Caribbean, Brazilian, and North American Carnival traditions, offering critical insights into how these celebrations serve as sites of both personal and collective liberation.

About Adam "Foreigner" Cooper:
Adam "Foreigner" Cooper is a DJ, designer and strategist best known for producing LA's most sought after Afro-Caribbean experiences. Hailing from Trinidad & Tobago, and raised in Caracas and Brooklyn, Foreigner's life has positioned him to forge unique, dynamic connections between the Caribbean, West Africa, and the Americas.

Rooted in Pan-African philosophy, his storytelling through graphic design, event production and genre-bending D, sets have garnered acclaim in the city, culminating in LA Weekly's Best Parties of 2023 accolade for Junkyard Jouvert and Roadblock™ as well as features in LA Times and Resident Advisor for his contribution to LA's cultural scene.

my experiences navigating caracas, nyc, dc, chicago, port of spain, miami and now los angeles as a black boy/man force me to experiment with and blend [new + old] black dance rhythms that are seemingly separate and apart just to see what the combo will do to our minds and bodies in a party setting. Just to see what happens when you put nova holanda in southside chicago, when you put santo domingo in accra, when you put port of spain in durban, just to see what happens when you suspend borders, nation + genre and solely rely on black rhythm. ⁣

this mix is an expression of panafricanism from the vantage point of being stupid drunk, covered in paint and mud at 5am on Carnival Monday morning in Port of Spain. enjoy.
