There is something spesh going on musically along the Berlin / Montreal / Warsaw axes these days, and this tape is your one way ticket to never going back to unknowingness. Consisting of 11 heretofore unreleased tracks from the M&M stable and beyond, Mixtape 1 serves to document a scene which spans significant geographic distance all the while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic sensibility. 

Magic Island’s “Ostsee” opens the proceedings, and it finds dream pop inhabitant Emma C sounding more confident than ever, not only in songwriting but also in production. Same goes for Antoine93, whose pop star ambitions haven’t been dulled by his time spent basking in the glory of being one of Berlin’s new star club kids. If anything, he has emerged from the haze of all those late nights with a pop sensibility that is tuned to perfection. 

Pascale Project delivers a spaced out track which brings to mind a simpler time in electronic music and Bataille Solaire shores up the Quebecois contributions to the tape with a track that will satisfy the heads who like their tuneage knotty and complex. 

Dylan III is sorely missed around Neukölln, so his contribution here, a skewed take on 80s AM gold replete with flamenco guitar and emotive vocals is very a welcome reminder of his immense talent and charisma. While we’re talking sorely missed, how about Jason Harvey? No two ways about this guy is a beauty, and his track, though objectively “weird” is, in its own way, perfect. Just like him. 

Jack Chosef, Normal Echo and Helen Fry weigh in with punchier, harder takes on their respective brands of outsider electronics, while scene linchpin Sean Nicholas Savage teams up with his Polish partner in crime (and current touring guitarist), Better Person, for a smooth as cover of Chris Isaak’s “Can’t Do A Thing (To Stop Me). 

One of the most pleasant surprises on the mix comes from Karolini. After years spent fine tuning his coffee making skills, then his cooking skills, then his joke telling skills, Karolini finally found time to produce some music, and, by gosh, it was worth the wait. “Twice As Much” is a timeless piece of songwriting, as instantly memorable as it is distinct from the other tracks on offer here. 

Finally, Warsaw based Olivier Helm and Pictorial Candi collaborate on Ballroom, a digital only bonus track that, like a jellyfish from the depths of the Vistula, is so smooth it hurts. 

All told, what we’ve got here is a beau-tay of comp, an immensely pleasing snapshot of a scene operating at its own pace and in its own world. There's no going back now.

Earth Boys - Spring Fling

I wanted to kick off the new year with something fresh and exclusive to share with everyone and after the success of my first compilation Moxie Presents Vol.1 it felt only right to get cracking with a second instalment.

With the same premise as Vol.1 the 9 track compilation is made up of a collection of artists I support on my radio shows and in the clubs, with each track being an exclusive download to this compilation.

It features some up and coming artists alongside some slightly more established artists with everyone offering something totally different. I play so many different styles and I wanted to make sure this was a true reflection of that so I hope you enjoy. We’ll also be releasing some vinyl samplers later in the year so keep an eye out for that!

We warmly welcome back Kettel who makes his return to Clone/DUB records since his debut Cenny Crush 15 years ago (which was followed by the brilliant Whisper Me Wishes in 2007). After a hiatus of 3 years since his last release Kettel is releasing his new album on Clone Records. The talented musician has been busy with producing music for computer games and commercials, but is now offering a fine selection of pieces he has made in the last couple years with this full length in mind. The result is a playful, inspiring, eclectic, delicate, melodic, well-balanced and brilliantly produced album fuzzing elements of electronica, classical music, jazz and techno stirred into flawless, memorable compositions. As a 90's kid Kettel has always been inspired by the early electronica pioneers (whose names don't even need to be mentioned... everyone knows who we're talking about right?), and on this album too you can hear some of the aesthetics of those late 90's productions, but adopted into Kettel's unique world of confident rhythms and melodies filled with expression. The music on this record has a lyrical quality to it and is so expertly written that it does not strictly depend on it's electronical environment: these compositions would still stand firm performed on whatever combination of instruments. Another lovely and magical release by Kettel thats spreading good vibes from the first to the last second!

Early 2013 brings new niceness from the Luv Shack. Head honcho, Simonlebon teams up with other Luv Shackers, and comes good with his own lick. Simonlebon has been providing quality through his DJ’ing and productions in recent years, good to see his name at the forefront of this release.

Buddies help out of course, and first to fly is the collab with Jakobin on ‘Can’t Do With You’. Warm and flowing, as is the norm with the LS crew through seven previously wonderful releases. Gentle builds entertain; claps with sunny smiles, and zestful and effective chords do the job admirable. Indeed, you just can’t do without this kind of groove in a set.

LeSale joins forces with Simonlebon for ‘So Many’. Punchier and throwing bigger hits, it’s destined to work up a sweat. Tasty piano, vocal treats, and a tip of the cap to dirty Detroit and classy Chicago do await the floor.

Flip it over on the 12” for ‘All I Can’ and you get more excellence this time containing the fine work of Lee Stevens aiding and abetting Simon. The most atmospheric track on the EP with subtle hints and notes of mystery and lost romance. A sexy and classy ‘bridge’ brings it all home again, and takes it a little further down the road. Gorgeous track!

Finally, Domino lends a helping hand with ’Second Chance’. Again, the mood is majestic and divine. True House music has always contained the pervading tone of life and love, and this is where Luv Shack always come through.

New and old, today and yesterday, you hear it in all their releases. Lights off and listen…and get lost.
