Types of Collisions
Collisions can be broadly categorized into two main types: elastic and inelastic. Each type has distinct characteristics and occurs under different conditions.

1. Elastic Collisions
Definition: An elastic collision is one in which the total kinetic energy and momentum of the system are conserved. In other words, the colliding bodies bounce off each other without any loss of kinetic energy or permanent deformation.

Characteristics:
Conservation of Kinetic Energy: The total kinetic energy before and after the collision remains the same.
No Permanent Deformation: The colliding bodies return to their original shapes after the collision.
No Heat Generation: There is no conversion of kinetic energy into heat or other forms of energy.
Examples:

Atomic and Molecular Collisions: In the microscopic world, collisions between atoms and molecules are often elastic. For example, gas molecules in a container collide elastically, which is a fundamental assumption in the kinetic theory of gases.
Billiard Balls: When two billiard balls collide, they exhibit nearly elastic behavior, bouncing off each other with minimal energy loss.
Implications:

Predictability: Elastic collisions are easier to analyze mathematically because of the conservation laws. This makes them useful in theoretical physics and engineering.
Limited Real-World Occurrence: In everyday life, perfectly elastic collisions are rare because most materials deform and generate heat upon impact.

2. Inelastic Collisions
Definition: An inelastic collision is one in which the total kinetic energy is not conserved, although the total momentum is conserved. Some of the kinetic energy is converted into other forms of energy, such as heat, sound, or deformation energy.

Characteristics:
Partial Loss of Kinetic Energy: Some of the kinetic energy is transformed into other forms of energy.
Permanent Deformation: The colliding bodies may undergo permanent deformation.
Heat and Sound Generation: Energy is often converted into heat and sound during the collision.

Example:
Car Crashes: In a car accident, the vehicles crumple and deform, absorbing a significant amount of kinetic energy. This deformation helps protect the occupants by reducing the force of impact.
Sports Injuries: When athletes collide, their bodies absorb energy, leading to bruises, sprains, or more severe injuries. For example, a football tackle often results in inelastic collisions where the players' bodies deform and generate heat.

Energy Absorption: Inelastic collisions are crucial for designing safety features, such as crumple zones in cars, which absorb energy to protect passengers.
Complex Analysis: Analyzing inelastic collisions is more complex due to the energy transformations involved. Engineers and scientists use advanced models to predict the outcomes of such collisions.
Subtypes of Inelastic Collisions
Inelastic collisions can be further divided into partially inelastic and perfectly inelastic collisions.

Partially Inelastic Collisions
Definition: In a partially inelastic collision, some but not all of the kinetic energy is lost. The colliding bodies do not stick together but may deform and generate heat.

Characteristics:

Partial Energy Loss: Only a portion of the kinetic energy is converted into other forms of energy.
Separation After Collision: The bodies separate after the collision, though they may be deformed.

Perfectly Inelastic Collisions
Definition: In a perfectly inelastic collision, the colliding bodies stick together after the collision, moving as a single combined mass. This type of collision results in the maximum possible loss of kinetic energy.

Characteristics:
Maximum Energy Loss: The maximum amount of kinetic energy is converted into other forms of energy.
Combined Mass Movement: The colliding bodies move together as one mass after the collision.

Goanna's sets move between techy rollers, deep dubstep, leftfield oddities, psytrance, techno and drum and bass - always with an ear for storytelling and space. He's supported the likes of Strategy, Halogenix, DJ Hybrid, Boris, Goth Trad, Plastician, Nikki Nair, Sister Zo, Pariah, and Matrixxman, with each set delivered as a conversation between the sound system and the dancefloor.
