Inspired by the works of Elianne Radigue, Phil Niblock and Pauline Oliveros, “Drone Diaries I” may be the truest entry to the drone/experimental genre on the Dead Letters Archive imprint thus far.

Layers of phased oscillators, intricately woven, come together in this deeply hypnotic collection of tracks from Arthur Song, a modular synthesist and sound designer from Malaysia, based in Belgium.

“Meanderings” is a mix that drifts through percussive experimentation, fractured rhythms, bold digital textures, soothing ambient + liminal, psychedelic vibes - the name being a nod to my own endlessly wandering listening habits (and the A. Song track, of course). 

It opens with a short field recording captured during a visit to my hometown on the New Jersey Shore - a cold winter November morning in the ocean air, a place I’ve always valued as one of the best to clear my head. This short audio file was simply labeled “bebey,” reminding me that I’d probably been thinking of Francis Bebey’s music during that walk. You can hear me lightly tapping and dragging on the boardwalk railing as I moved, likely inspired by the thought of his brilliant sanza (kalimba / thumb piano) work. Much of Bebey’s music has a hypnotic quality that I deeply resonate with, and "Sanza Nocturne" in particular has a special place as one of my favorite musical statements of all time. It felt right to let that energy guide the opening of this mix.

A quick note: 

The track "Beginner Race" is from the 1984 Atari arcade game Marble Madness. Playing this game in the arcade as a kid was an enormous inspiration. When I think about why I'm so attracted to esoteric music, the inspiration I got from early video games has to be up there. This game in particular - the soundtrack has always "haunted" me (in the best way possible). The only version I have found from the actual arcade game is on YouTube, which is complete with the noise (from what I guess are the chip limitations). Please note: I touched the track up slightly with some EQ and a gentle reverb that builds throughout. 

Marble Madness was the FIRST arcade game with TRUE stereo sound (previous games used monaural or simulated stereo). It ran on Atari System 1 hardware with (mainly) the Yamaha YM2151 chip. That’s part of why its soundtrack has those warm, eccentric digital FM tones that still sound exciting today.
