Initially emerging as a product of the nebulous post-dubstep scene, DJ, producer and jazz drummer Calum Lee aka @Paleman has contributed a huge amount to UK underground music over time, from his earlier Swamp 81 release to further explorations into more shadowy territory on labels like Zehnin and Nonplus, as well as his Rinse FM series 'Trenches'. More recently he's been dropping a string of vinyl and digital EPs via his personal PLMN label, exploring the more eyes-down side of warehouse techno that calls to mind the likes of Regis and Pinch. The third in the series, 'PLMN003', drops this month, and we're thrilled to premiere 'Worm Field' now. "With this record I wanted to create a patch on the modular then just hit record and improvise the whole track," he tells Dummy of the cut. "'Worm Field' was recorded this way in one take in my home studio. Then during my recent Canadian tour I was super lucky to be able to get a day mixing it with my friend and expert engineer Ryan Enockson in 'The Warehouse' studio in Vancouver. We spent hours tracking and and re-recording parts through a vintage SSL console and a whole host of other mouth-watering outboard gear. The result (I hope) is music that sounds tangible and alive and is rough around the edges. I'm happy to say that every element in the track has truly existed from the recording to the mixing process where it ran down wires and and became distorted by overloaded circuitry. I'm by no means an analogue purist, but I wanted to experiment with improvisation and one-take recordings on this record without compromise." Boasting hollow, moaning synths over red raw drums, it's a track primed for big room play.
