Initially emerging as a product of the nebulous post-dubstep scene, DJ, producer and jazz drummer Calum Lee aka @Paleman has contributed a huge amount to UK underground music over time, from his earlier Swamp 81 release to further explorations into more shadowy territory on labels like Zehnin and Nonplus, as well as his Rinse FM series 'Trenches'. More recently he's been dropping a string of vinyl and digital EPs via his personal PLMN label, exploring the more eyes-down side of warehouse techno that calls to mind the likes of Regis and Pinch. The third in the series, 'PLMN003', drops this month, and we're thrilled to premiere 'Worm Field' now. "With this record I wanted to create a patch on the modular then just hit record and improvise the whole track," he tells Dummy of the cut. "'Worm Field' was recorded this way in one take in my home studio. Then during my recent Canadian tour I was super lucky to be able to get a day mixing it with my friend and expert engineer Ryan Enockson in 'The Warehouse' studio in Vancouver. We spent hours tracking and and re-recording parts through a vintage SSL console and a whole host of other mouth-watering outboard gear. The result (I hope) is music that sounds tangible and alive and is rough around the edges. I'm happy to say that every element in the track has truly existed from the recording to the mixing process where it ran down wires and and became distorted by overloaded circuitry. I'm by no means an analogue purist, but I wanted to experiment with improvisation and one-take recordings on this record without compromise." Boasting hollow, moaning synths over red raw drums, it's a track primed for big room play.

Mish brings a chugged out, wobbly techno treasure with hints of dancehall rhythms as part of the first release from the new Bristol imprint Pressure Dome. 

Tied together by syncopated rhythms and broken beats, each producer brings their own style, tempo and atmosphere to this debut release. All five tracks ooze individuality, yet subtly tie together with influences and sounds of a city that naturally nurtures progressive experimentalism. Pressure Dome’s offering is a fine example of burgeoning collective, with likeminded producers set on an uncompromising approach to the broken beat.

As he peaks out from under the duvet, he notices shadows shift in unfamiliar ways. He immediately pulls the covers back over his face and whips his arm back in from it’s dangled position at the side of the bed. As the clock turns, each second is marked by a tick that fills the room with sound. The emptiness of the house is marked by creaks of settling floorboards and gurgling pipes, each made in inconsistent and unexpected ways. The air in his blanket sanctuary begins to feel heavy, dense from the sweated bullets, evaporated with panicked breath as the covers cling to his skin. He curls up and pulls tightly at the bed sheets. Just as he begins to feel safe, there’s three hard knocks on the door.

Delve into madness with a track by Canadian ghetto-house connoisseur Garneau. Part of a compilation by London-based label Shubzin, out on a pay-what-can basis. All profits are in aid of Youth Urban Arts Foundation, a charity that gives disadvantaged young people an opportunity to express themselves through music and art. Foot stomping bangers and a fantastic cause, what’s not to love? The track ‘CLM’ sees Garneau trying his hand at breakbeat techno, and is littered with gnarled kicks, earth-shattering bass and enough breaks to make even the most committed Junglist slow their roll.

Pugilist steps up on Trule with a four track EP of sound system club heaters across various styles and BPMs. From the broken UK garage of the title track, the crunching breaks of Untitled with ILK, the dubwise Junglism of Adversity with Tamen, and the techno dancehall variation of Portal. Something for all the dancers.

Like the beginning of any dream, my subconscious fills in the gaps. “Where am I?”… I’m on the moon. “How did I get here?”… I’ve always been here. My dialogue subsides as an uncertain planet enters centre vision. A ‘chinese-whispers' Earth, with geographic features lost as rumour spreads through the cosmos. Though the solar path is obscured, I see no sign of darkness on the planet, only faint projections of unanswered questions and manifestations of doubt. As the projections focus, and words become more visceral, I turn away and walk towards the Sun.

With five years of releases under their belt, London’s DEXT Recordings are legendary curators of some of the most forward-thinking electronic music the UK has to offer. To celebrate the milestone, they’ve delivered 'eleVAte Vol. 1’, a 4-track compilation featuring some of their heaviest hitters. Track by track, the release is steeped in a dynamic spread of UK sounds, with plenty of bass weight and life-affirming synths added for good measure. Our pick, ’Eclipse’ by Pugilist is a skippy ode to the garage days of yonder, brimming with swing, bass and lush Rhodes stabs.
