Born from the depths of existence came the desire to create. That what travels from the night into the day, that what lingers after an ultimate feeling of musical bliss. Elevating those experiences, we take the grooves and melodies converging them into a new night. Appearing as if new. All of a sudden.

This is the second release of the new All of a Sudden imprint, produced by Formel.

Starting off with some funky beats, the EP’s title track “Chocolates” quickly takes you into a relaxed realm of chilled atmos. When the bass starts pushing the track further and some bells open up another space, it’s time for a tension builder of a break filled with the typical analog goodies Formel brings to the table.

Although the second track of the EP, “Apollo”, starts with similar funky breaks and beats, it is much more of a moody beast. The big piano stabs, a groovy bassline and a driving synth line will lure you to the break, where a huge space, filled with voices, will take you to some other part of our universe.

In the ever so expanding Dutch house scène where peak time techno, house, trance or EDM is calling the shots, Formel is a true breath of fresh air. The Leiden based duo - consisting of Tom Noah and Bas van der Laken - are debuting on Bla Bla Records with their first full length album. Entzun is made up of nine carefully crafted pieces of modern dance music. You can dance to it, oh yes, but theres a distinctive thin line to walk here between dancing and enjoying the diversities that the Formel sound is so wonderfully exhibiting throughout this album. Despite the title, Cest Fini, track two on the album, is only just the start of a beautiful journey through a deep and colorful palette of sounds with a wide and varied worldly feel. Organic and melodic with a perfectly fitting balance between dancing and listening; Formel comes up with a refreshing and exciting sound you havent quite heard yet. Digging deeper in the historys of the ambitious duo, its no big surprise Tom and Bas came from totally different backgrounds. While Bas produced progressive (trance) music for many years, Tom made fame as a (tech) house dj. This, perhaps, unusual combination turned out to be there USP. Call it synergy if youd like, it sure works! Take Seleta for example. The track is driven on a deep, dubby groove with a funky bassline and precisely timed percussion, while short deephouse chords run through the track before it climaxes with a long, playfully.. wait for it piano solo! Unusual, yes, but very tasteful and beautifully arranged. The piano turned out to be the backbone of the Formel sound. Melodic, playful and warm string arrangements are heard in almost every track, while the albums groovy, percussive beats and cutup vocal snippets are keeping things danceable. Centerpiece is the track that carries the album title. Entzun, a beautiful, sultry, warm summer night masterpiece supported by an acoustic guitar riff with a breathtaking breakdown. When the kick falls back in, the album climaxes relentlessly. Entzun is a playful, encouraging musical trip through a wide range of styles not often to be seen. But its cohesive and a definitive bold and brave step forward in a world where dance music is more and more based on disposable dj tools. Leiden based duo Formel aka Tom Noah and Bas Van Der Laken debut on Piston with the superb The Magnificent Kaleidoscopa EP. The guys had met in strange circumstances, they were fighting over a bottle of Vodka backstage at a gig and from that they formed Formel. Since then they have forged a strong partnership and blended their respective styles, Bas having the more progressive sound and Tom having a more tech house style. They debuted in 2013 on Bla Bla Records and have played at top gigs and events across Europe. Well worth keeping an eye on this formidable pair.

We kick off this superb EP with the title track, The Magnificent Kaleidoscopa. The intro eases in with some cool percussions that have a hint of tribalism attached. A perfectly balanced thumping kick soon takes over with a super sweet pad and sultry vocal sitting in the background. The bassline is a wonderfully rich, full sound that warms the track beautifully as smooth synths add a colourful texture. A very smooth and upbeat slice that will be a feature in many sets for sure.

Popayan intros with a subtle percussion with distant melodic phrases fading in from the back. A strong punchy kick gets the track really moving with the help of crispy sharp hats and some brilliant FX. The bassline takes the sound that little bit further with its deep resonating pulses. Very smooth and groovy offering with beautifully layered sounds, top notch.

Prince Rupert sets off with a cool punchy kick as the percussions begin to form up to bring a steady, flowing rhythm. Lush chords bring a wonderful deep house groove to the sound which are filled with melodic flavours. The bassline brings a tough edge to the track which contrasts perfectly with much more upbeat main sound. The break reveals smooth pads that ebb and flow beautifully leading to some cool synth work before getting right back into the main groove for the duration, classy stuff that is not to be missed.

Formel is a Leiden based duo composed of Tom Noah and Bas van der Laken.  

While Bas produced progressive music for many years, Tom made fame as a techhouse dj. Combining sounds by using plain techno beats, raw bass lines and a hint of jazz, makes the sound that is typical Formel. The sounds of Formel are a beautiful journey through a deep and colorful palette with a wide and varied worldly feel. Organic and melodic with a perfectly fitting balance between dancing and listening; Formel comes up with a refreshing and exciting sound you haven’t quite heard yet.

Formel debuted in 2013 on Daniel Sanchez’ ‘Bla Bla Records’ with their first full length album of nine tracks ‘Entzun’. Their follow up was their EP Kolyma on Berlins Einmusiks’ ‘Einmusika Recordings’ in May 2014. Formel can be booked both as live or DJ set. Live you can expect the deep, grooving and danceable sounds of Formel. While Tom performs as DJ, expect an extra pinch of power, to get the dancefloor moving.

Formel played at national and international clubs and festivals suchs as Off Sonar – Einmusika meets Katermukke (Barcelona), Tach & Nacht (Hamburg), Pleinvrees Heroes (Amsterdam), Amsterdam Open Air (Amsterdam), Goldfish Outdoor (Amsterdam), Paradiso (Amsterdam) and Graefenthal (NL).
