When i’d just turned 18 back in 2013 I went on a big camping trip/hike with my closest friends up that mountain, but I was in a really fragile mental state around that time. I had a pretty bad, embarrassing breakdown midway through the trip and had to go home, and it left a really big mark on me that I hadn’t really tried to unpack before until this past year." - Former Hero

I Need To Stay is a song I wrote shortly after finding out about the mental health struggles someone very close to me had been going through. I had to go to university for my exams, but I felt like I needed to stay. One evening I sat down with just myself and my laptop in my small dorm room, and I decided to put all my feelings and emotions into a song. Once finished, I sent it to my neighbour Emily, before we met up and recorded the final vocals for the song. Since then this has been a song of strength for me. A reminder of the strength and drive that person had to power through their feelings and emotions to still be here today. That same very person was the one that made the artwork for this song. I hope you enjoy it! :D

“I started off writing about a specific person who turned out to be a completely different person I thought they were when I met them. I left the song to sit for a few months, and the meaning completely changed for me. It went from being a song about a person, to a song about my relationship with mental health. ‘Friends Now’ is about being at odds with your brain, and wanting nothing more than to be okay with yourself when going through turbulent times. I love that the song can be read as both a ‘self vs. person’ and ‘self vs. self’ way depending on how you're feeling.” - Former Hero
