Punchline

This is a short piece of instrumental music that I started working on at home shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine. It has quite specific meaning and resonance for me, for anyone else though I suppose it can be described as a tune for our times. I hope it makes people feel something, maybe something like looking back for something lost, or maybe something that never was.

Rochdale’s John Blackburn has a new project called Crocus Sunday. He describes the music, as demonstrated on Jimi, as ‘lots of repetition, harmony, electronics and a bit of guitar to boot’ which is a pretty good summary. It is a track that doesn’t obviously sit in any one category, having the feel of a documentary theme or even computer game interlude but it isn’t exactly cinematic in the grandiose meaning of that term. John clarifies that the title is not a reference to Hendrix but to a new addition to the family. It is an imaginative track and its major key arpeggio patterns and minimalist style patterns are upbeat and heartwarming.

Jimi

Using field recordings from Hull University in 1985 for a never finished avant-garde musical venture.  The odd ambient sounds were recorded using our custom made AKTR recording device.. actually an Amazing Knackered Tape Recorder... it was just about as sophisticated as we could get in 1985.  It starts with 1 minute of spooky chords, then a bit of TD/Krautrock, and finally ... well I don't know really.

On the aptly named Many Colours we are taken on a journey, often punctuated by staccato synth patterns but nevertheless very fluid, seeming to be vague and ambient one moment, quite Prog-like the next and even finding room for a few jazz infusions here and there. Spoken word samples play low in the mix and there is an atmosphere that shifts as does the tempo and texture of the music. Clever and engaging."

Bluest Nile

Most of this track came together in one morning, in one of those beautiful moments where you get so deep into what you're doing that you lose track of time. I produced it at a point where I was really trying to improve at doing and moving rather than overthinking and holding yourself back, which is where the name 'kinetic' comes from

Very loosely based on the opening chords to Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians ... Day 18 of Lockdown in April 2020 with only a single walk a day out of the house... this one with the entire family.  Stay safe.

Music For 18 Days

Formula2 are Vikki Carden and John Blackburn.  We are a covers duo based in the North West.  We've been playing together since 2009, and as Formula2 since 2017.  We also do a bit of original material and have been a fresh fave on FOTN and also played on BBC Radio 6.  Vikki loves David Bowie and John is into techno, rock and baroque.
