Giants of Mandurah - FORM & Thomas Dambo

NOW I OWN shares the story of a creative learning program_Creative Schools Innovative Assessment_that is helping young people at risk not only change the narratives they tell themselves, but also how other people ‘read’ those narratives about them.

Devised in 2016 by FORM Building a State of Creativity in partnership with Creativity, Culture and Education (UK), Creative Schools was originally developed for Western Australia’s public and independent school system. For the last two years it has also been taking place in CARE schools, thanks to the championship of the Association of Independent Schools (AISWA). The experiences and reactions of the students, teachers and creative practitioners involved shape a remarkable testimonial.

NOW I OWN offers evidence of a process, and it presents stories of exposure, adventure, frustration and breakthrough. Of discovery, determination and trust. It’s about challenge and courage. About sticking with discomfort, trying out new things. It’s the story of deep, hard, meaningful learning for young people who may frequently struggle with learning.

NOW I OWN is a manifesto for creativity in learning: a multilayered narrative that has something meaningful to offer to students, schools and educators everywhere. And it is also a collection of vibrant, personal stories about daring, imagination, purpose and grit: of feeling_and being_more free to learn.

Creative Schools - NOW I OWN: A Celebration of Creative Bravery [2023]

This year, FORM has been running I HAVE MORE TO SAY, a podcast project, as part of the Creative Schools program in CARE schools. Partnering with Murdoch University’s Media Arts Centre and facilitated by podcasters Brooke Collard and Amanda Kendle, the project has mentored students through all aspects of podcast production, from concept development through to recording, editing, technical delivery, interviewing, and storytelling.

The key aim of I HAVE MORE TO SAY has been to offer a platform for some of Western Australia’s more marginalised and vulnerable young people to access a means of self-expression, to learn and use marketable and career-relevant skills to create soundscapes for their own learning experiences and identities.

It’s a chance for these sometimes muted and hidden voices to take control of their narratives, speak their truths, and tell the stories they want to tell. To share and curate their own interpretations of the world.

keeping the conversations going with the Creative Schools podcast project.

In July and August this year, 50 students from Alta-1 ConnectED, The Y Vocational School, Fairbridge College and Port School and a couple of home school cohorts travelled to Murdoch University’s media centre. The purpose of their visits was to learn all about making podcasts, to become familiar with recording and editing in a professional studio, and practise interviewing each other.

Ancient China/Modern Joondalup took our students on a journey through time, drawing threads from ancient Chinese history, philosophy and technology forward into the relevance of this
ancient culture to modern day life. Through creative uses of podcasting, graphic design and multimedia, we encouraged our students to consider ancient China’s ongoing contributions to our lives and societies.

Alta-1 College: Joondalup - Ancient China/Modern Joondalup

Constellations is a site-specific, cross-curricular project that encouraged a small cohort of students to explore and visually document a nearby bushland site. We used the cosmos as a conceptual prompt from which to launch discussions and ideas about creation mythologies, and how these could be represented here and now through the lens of emerging adulthood.

The Biz project was designed to explore the real world of business and financial literacy with students in their final years of schooling. Focusing on Key Curriculum Areas of Mathematics, Technology and Literacy, the project aimed to equip our students with real-world skills in organising and managing finances and budgets; and to design, fund and produce a product or service for launch at Port School’s annual in-house Trade Fair and also for NOW I OWN.

Port School - The Biz

Making the Invisible Visible is a science-based project focusing on microbes and the roles they play in the world around us. We explored our local environment of Wood Lake, and filled glass jars with lake water to make biomes. Each biome was protected by a ‘master of the universe’ in the shape of a Lego Minifigure made by our students. Each week in our classroom laboratory, we investigated what had grown in the jars, identifying microbes such as algae, fungus, protozoa, bacteria, and viruses. Our students learned how to observe like professional scientists, by looking through the lens of a microscope, and recording their findings in learning journals. Through macro photography they enlarged these microscopic microbes to make them visible, and then, using recycled materials from sustainable sources, transformed them into 3-D forms.

Alta-1 College: Ellenbrook - Making the Invisible Visible

Topographical Textures of Terrain delves into the different landscapes of self, connection to Country and physical geographical landforms. The Creatives from Fairbridge College were encouraged to explore their internal landscapes, the Indigenous spiritual landscape, connection to Country and the physical landscape of geography, while experiencing the space and place around them. This project was designed as an opportunity to investigate the Curriculum in tactile, kinaesthetic ways, through the use of a variety of materials, and with a focus on creating circular motifs.

Fairbridge College - Topographical Textures of Terrain

Over the last semester, students at Rockingham’s SMYL Malayin Miya campus have been applying the Five Creative Learning Habits to the Curriculum topics of Language and Leadership: specifically the Noongar language and Yoka (First Nations Women Leaders) from Western Australia. These Yoka include Noongar resistance fighter Fanny Balbuk (1840–1907), Noongar postmistress and telegraphist Mary Ellen Cuper/ Pangieran (1847–1877), activist and Noongar woman Barbara Jackson (c.1909–1976), and key figure in the Pilbara Pastoral Workers’ Strike of 1946, Martu woman Daisy Bindi (c.1904–1962).
