The Transfer

I was 18½ when my first love and I broke up. Just before we ended, she said something that never left me:

“The next girl you date will be the one you marry.”

At the time, it felt like wisdom. Like prophecy. But in the years that followed, it turned into something heavier.

Her sentence became my sentence.

Not just something she said, but something I carried. A quiet pressure. A forecast I didn’t ask for but still tried to fulfill. So when it didn’t work out, I didn’t just lose a person - I lost a prophecy.

Gloria was written at 22, in the fallout of that unraveling. It carried the weight of expectation, the shame of getting it “wrong,” and the ache of knowing the future you were promised no longer existed.

Gloria isn’t her name. Not my first love, not the last. It’s the echo of glory - the dream I was chasing when I didn’t know I was still chasing her. It’s the sound of expectation crashing into reality, and singing anyway.

Everyone has a “Sparrow” that haunts them.
