Nick Lawson - By Any Means EP [BOE023]

Jade Seatle met Jane Fitz at tech-house haven Kerfuffle in Brixton around 2005 or 06 (they don't remember). They bonded that day over records, and a strange story about a pebble.

Disillusioned with parties in London, rather than moan, Jade and Jane decided to make their own. Night Moves was born in 2012, after Jade Seatle and Jane Fitz visited Jenifa Mayanja in the summer of 2011, at home in Connecticut, and promised her a party to play at in London. What then evolved was a journey in music, gatherings and friendship, and a lesson in how community can evolve from a dancefloor. Night Moves spawned Day Moves, Field Moves, a B2B partnership, and many, many ridiculous parties in a range of wonderful locations. The records on this release not only represent the sound of Night Moves - all are tried-and-tested NM greatest hits - but the sound that brought Jade and Jane together, informed what they do now, where they've been and where they are still to go.

Jade Seatle And Jane Fitz Present The Sound Of Night Moves

For the best part of 10 years, For Those That Knoe has maintained its position as a platform for obscure and under-represented artists of recent past, (re)introducing their music to the world in the form of a stories told in chapters and specially crafted albums.

Taking a slightly different tack, For Those That Knoe is looking to the present rather than back in time with a first LP outing for Slovenian producer Vid Vai. 

Vid Papez has had a succession of quality EPs under his belt, originally classically trained on violin, lute and guitar, his sound has developed into a lush mix of catchy breakbeat rhythms, precise intelligent percussion and other-worldly melodies and sound scapes.

In constructing Laminar Flow, Vid has taken inspiration from fluid dynamics and coupled it with early influences in the form of UK bleep, IDM and breakbeat sounds. The result is a timeless piece of liquid-smooth sonic art that is strongly relevant in 2022 whilst also giving a gentle nod to the pioneers of the deeper end of the rave scene.

@nimbus_music are three chaps originally from the house music epicentre of Woking, England. In the early 2000s, Oli, Funn and Pete carted a gigantic Dell computer between each other’s houses to craft a modest but timeless back catalogue of deep and emotional tracks. Their music was featured on European labels Bitboutique and the excellent Iron Box Music at the time; of which "Entron" a particular shining example of their sound, only recently gained notoriety amongst a number of discerning DJs. For Those That Knoe is proud to present a sonic snapshot of those times the lads spent in the home counties with three previously released cuts from the aforementioned labels and one taken from their unreleased archives.

In this episode I was able to welcome the guys behind a wicked little deep house label called Ordinaire Records, based out of Strasbourg in France. Rony, Alex and Thomas have been putting on parties in their area and have their third vinyl release baking in the oven right now. I’ve played both their previous releases on my past shows so it’s been a pleasure to have them on to lay down 90 mins of their signature sound. Listening back to their mix brought out a lot of nostalgia for me as they touch on some of the sounds I was really into (and still am!) during my formative years in the early 2000s, with records from Inland Knights, JT Donaldson, EBE and more. It has been some years now since Nail came back from the wilderness after one of his early EPs was re-released by Fear of Flying. Since then he has turned out plenty of new material as well as digging deep into his vast and vital vaults to serve up the sort of lo-fi but kicking house sounds that made him and his Nottingham crew such a driving force back in the 90s. And that's what we get here on For Those That Knoe - no fewer than eight masterfully stripped-back cuts of deep house. Some are laced with dreamy melodies, some roll deep for days, some are raw and textured pumpers and some are jazzed-up bangers with charm to spare. Essential stuff.

Halal Prepared Vol. 3

This first volume of Halal Prepared comprises of a who's who of boe's past, present and future. The label stalwart KiNK who has recently found form on Mule Electronic and Kolour contributes a fine piece of deep, synth laden house music that has a warm and fuzzy vibe.  The track builds from KiNK's crisp and punchy kicks and claps, helped along by a delicately delayed bell synth slowly opening up into the main chord sequence. The beat drops down to its minimum, a soaring string squeezes in as the pulsing synth pad's filter peaks and the bass kicks in. The track breaks down to include the ethereal vocal talents of Rachel Row whose sounds are limited to soft backings to the overall melody but add an extra layer of warmth to the harmony. The tension is built once more with a cheeky little male vocal for a fitting finale to a track that will have you desperate to seek out a glorious sunrise as a back setting to this uplifting underground gem.

BOE007 A1 KiNK - Kiss the Sky

I recorded this mix in the remaining weeks before me and my family upped sticks, leaving London for rural West England.

"Citi 2 Valley" is a blend of deep techy flavours new and old covering a lot of my influences. It's full of lo slung deep chuggers, bumpy tech house rollers and dreamy trippy groovers.

Quickly becoming one to watch in the techno circles, John Shima is making waves with his fresh approach to that classic Detroit sound. His contribution for boe is nothing short of a stunning representation of underground electronic music.

The main track Prototype is an industrial house track machined with grit and mechanics. It’s a sonic ode to industry: blueprinted in the motor city and forged in Sheffield. It’s heads down for the dance floor with shimmering metallic overtones and a side order of robot jack.

Ancient Skies points more towards Chicago stylings with shades of Casual and Relief syncopated basslines and swing. John manages to capture the melancholy party vibe of those early records with crystal clear production skills and neat arrangements.

Transducer is groovy experimental techno that could have easily sat on the much revered Objet D’Art compilation from ‘94. Dreamy, fluid and pumping. It’s electronic music that will stand the test of time.

This latest Basement Wax selector mix is from DJ, label owner and producer, Ben Boe. Ben’s imprints have left a modest but credible mark on the underground house community over the last 15+ years, having delved deep across the electronic spectrum to search for individual sonic trademarks and push lesser known artists to the fore. 

Leaning deep into his record collection, Ben’s mix is a silky tapestry of NY gems, chuggy west coast rollers, space funk jams and soulful vocal pumpers taking a heads down trip across all four corners of the deep house world.

Parts of my set recorded live at O Galop on a glorious Sunday afternoon and evening in sunny Marseille. It was an incredible party with a friendly and up for it crowd, hence me throwing down stuff a little more up front than usual. PARTY VIBES. The recording had a couple of problems at the start and in the middle section so I've uploaded from about 30mins in and the last 2 hours.

Derek Carr is a name known by few and far between, with only a handful of vinyl releases in the early 2000s, he built a worthy but unfortunately not widely-spread reputation for putting together stunning deep techno. Originally pressed in finite numbers, the records have recently found themselves in demand on Discogs, and rightly so, Derek’s music is in a class of its own. Having been a big fan since his releases on then local (to label owner Ben) Leeds label Geek records, For Those That Knoe has dug deep into the archives to put together a sizeable selection of Derek’s back catalogue, with some unreleased gems dotted amongst the classic must-haves, spread across three EPs

Part two of three in Derek’s series kicks off with a Destiny, a driving deep techno funk filled jam, originally released on Derek’s label Trident. Bob is a spacey and sparse melodic electro gem taken from the unreleased archives. L’Equipe on the flip was one of the standout cuts on Derek’s solo EP on Headspace Recordings, pure unadulterated deep house. Museum Piece is a groovy ambient electro jam ripped from DAT and slotted into the B2.


KNOE 5/2 - Derek Carr

Half-Swedish/half British artist Leif is based in the UK. In the past few years, Leif has forged a reputation within the underground scene for his trademark sound - a blend of minimal house that encompasses elements of deep dubby tech-house, bleepy minimalism, delicate chord soundscapes and enough chicago-house style shuffle to to keep the dancefloor moving.

Leif’s first outing onto boe comprises of “Remember” an upfront deep house gem featuring the vocal talents of Donna Lea. Tight and punchy drums with that trademark garage shuffle bounce the track through the intro as Donna’s vocal snippets groove alongside the resonanced jazz chord sequence. Remember’s analogue bassline pumps it further into Chicago Boompty territory with hi hats swinging like old couples in a Louis Theroux documentary. The track is stripped down to its core groove and into an acappella breakdown that leaves the listener itching for that bassline to kick back in to its warm finale.

On remix duties are Azuni, Swiss partners in serious house crime fresh from their highly charted release on Drumpoet. Azuni take the elements from the original and truly rework it into a blissed out mid-ninetees house gem. It has as much of a nod the future as it does to Strictly Rhythm influences with its lush pads and European deep flavour.

Finishing off the EP is She’s Kooky, a dancefloor workout with scything disco filter chords that resonate in and out and finally open up over their low-slung beat and bass accompaniament. Definitely one for those up in the air moments in dark surroundings.

Part three in Derek’s starts with Cuba, probably the most sought after track in his back catalogue. It's stunning simplicity and charming summer vibe puts it amongst Derek's greatest works and understandably so. Red then slots into the A2 position which was originally released under the radar on a Headspace compilation. As warm as Cuba but with an added touch of melancholy. Truly outstanding deep house.

Iceberg takes things back more into techno territory with a funked up bass line, stepping rhythms, Detroit strings and those trademark twinkly leads. Finally Penthouse Apartment 3AM a lush electro breakbeat track from the very hard to find Trident release, rounds off the EP with aplomb.

Foreword by Ben (For Those That Knoe)
As a young person growing up in West Yorkshire, my experiences of true underground clubbing became intertwined with names such as Back to Basics, 20/20 Vision and Carl Finlow. That period in the early 2000's became a life-affirming time for my young self. Frequent trips to Back to Basics, then held at the Mint Club helped forge my outlook on electronic music and how it should be played in a club environment. I would often hear stories about "the Farm" and the late night parties and studio sessions. The anecdotes and tales of US icons recording in the countryside with the local guys provided only a small insight into the creativity and fun that must have gone on during those years. Cut to now in 2017, whilst looking back to those times more than fifteen years ago, I can proudly say that the dots have been joined and the connections now formally established. I'm immensely proud to say that Carl Finlow, the understated king of British electro, and I, have put together a selection of his works that provides a themed snapshot into his musical history.

The music I have chosen with Carl may not be all of his biggest tracks but it is the music that is special to me. The selection has a vibe, one that is deep and emotive, music for the head as well as the feet. I hope you hear it in the same way.

Ben Boe has been curating some seriously sweet releases over the course of the last few years on his For Those That Knoe and Boe Recordings imprints. A devoted collector through and through with an aesthetic and sound that he has made his own, Ben turns in a super slick selection of old and new from across the globe.

For Those That Knoe delves deeper into the archives once more to repackage a bundle of hard to find cuts on vinyl that have been staple supplies in Ben's record bag over the years.

The early to mid 2000s was a period of minimal techno overload, finding quality house music then was a challenge compared to today. Rather than follow the herd, some European producers took influence from the original minimal pioneers and fused those approaches with house music themes in order to push a unique sound of the era. They turned minimal on its head and gave took it in a different direction. Canson from Switzerland released a handful of records between 2002 and 2005 that were a prime example of this aesthetic. Stripped back beats with syncopated melodies - perfect cuts for those early sets or hazy morning sessions. 

The three tracks featured on this compilation were originally released on two solo EPs for Canson: Itsudemo and Holiday Plug In, both of which have claimed squatter's rights in my record bag for almost 15 years. I don't think I've played one early slot or house set without one of them. This record is quite a personal one for me as it’s a representation of my deeper sound as a DJ. Now the original records are a little hard to find so I'm so glad to share my choice picks of Canson's material on a my label.

Canson - Knoe 8/1

For Those That Knoe kicks off a series of DJ-selected compilations featuring unearthed gems and tried and trusted belters. The first release in the series is provided by label owner Ben boe. Ben has dug deep into the racks to select two personal record box faves. Slaves Incorporated (Paul Rayner) released a short sequence of raw UK-styled garage music in the mid-ninetees on the label "To Groove To Records" out of the UK midlands. The pick of the bunch, "Baby", a peak time thumper with classic organ stabs and swooping subs graces the A-side. Tom Gillieron, perhaps only known to folk on the London scene has released some sought after tech house classics. Originally featuring on his first solo EP on Reverberations in 1998, "The Fire" is an impeccably produced deep breakbeat track for the heads.

Our 148th mix comes from Ben Boe, the founder of one of our favourite labels, For Those That Knoe. Ben set up For Those That Knoe in 2013 with an intention to turn the reissue market on its head. Rather than plainly reissuing individual expensive records on Discogs, Ben has re-positioned several artists previously unknown to most and given them a platform to shine; most notably Casey Tucker and Derek Carr in recent years. Ben is well respected for the breadth and depth of his A&R approach - For Those That Knoe will release two LPs before summer: the dreamy, super deep house of Planisphere, and the edgy, intergalactic electro sounds of ADJ. This approach is reflected in his DJing, with an ability to stitch together a rich tapestry of electronic sounds. This mix however has focused more on newer music with records purchased in the last year.

"On the mix I wanted to record something a bit fresher although I haven't really been on top of record purchasing in the past 12 months. It definitely leans more towards my housier sound and I managed to slot in two tracks from the forthcoming Planisphere LP. It was mixed at home on two technics 1210s and my Vestax PMC CX rotary mixer."

This mix has been in the works for some time so we are very happy to finally have it come to fruition. Big thanks to Ben for what is one of the best submissions we have had to our mix series!
