in 2003 Steve Raskin, Rob Myers, Jon Horvath, and Sid Barcelona formed Fort Knox Five in Washington, D.C. as a project to explore all things funky, regardless of genre or tempo. From the beginning, the vibe was retro, the sound was funk, and the beats were fresh. 20 years into it and FK5 are still going strong!

Another Decade of Funk continues the musical journey started on 10 years of Fort Knox Five released in 2013. That compilation showcased the origins and evolution of the Fort Knox sound and created the foundation for the decade that followed.

The story of the second decade kicks off with Fort Knox Five’s sophomore studio album,
Pressurize The Cabin. This collection features some choice gems from that release including the boom bap party anthem "Reach”, featuring Flex Mathews.  Mustafa Akbar drops the funk on “Whatcha Gonna Do” and “Keep it Poppin” while legendary British trombonist and soul crooner Ashley Slater brings the heat on “Fire in my Belly.” (Available here as a radio edit for the first time)

After a chance meeting with Sir Joe Quarterman, one of D.C.’s legendary singers from the 70’s, the group cooked up the floor burner “Don’t Go”, which captures the vibe of D.C.’s classic funk era. “Give it a Minute” pushes the hometown influence into the future with its Go-Go meets 808 jeep beats topped by the bouncing crisp flow of Bcap. 

In 2017 Steve relocated to British Columbia and some incredible collaborations followed starting with the modern funk-meets-glitch hop banger “Jinglin’ Janglin’” with K+Lab, featuring vocals by hip hop royalty Baby Bam (Jungle Brothers). The “DC to BC” series grew, teaming up with Slynk on “Keep the Funk Real”, and with Lazy Syrup Orchestra on “Start the Ride”, both exploring some west coast mid tempo vibes. 

Alongside these future forward collaborations, the classic FK5 sound can be heard loud and clear on “Playing with Fire” featuring Emily Molloy as well as the funky instrumental groover “McGuires Audio Shop.” 

The 11 tracks on Another Decade of Funk celebrate the funky flavors that Fort Knox Five have been creating over the last decade, and see the continued evolution of the group taking the FK sound straight into the future. 

Fort Knox Recordings thrives as a melting pot of genres, where Funk, Breaks, House, Downtempo, Trip-Hop, and more find their rightful home. What happens when you combine some electronic funk from the Nation's Capital and blend it with some glitched-out beats and basslines from Australia? You get a wobbly, funky dance floor banger, aptly titled Keep The Funk Real, the lovechild of Slynk and Fort Knox Five. Evan Chandler aka Slynk and Steve Raskin of FK5 have been long time friends and have played shows together going back a decade. As part of the Danio Music crew the two have represented funky beats across the globe, but it took both of them living in Vancouver to finally collaborate on a track.

Keep The Funk Real is a mid-tempo glitch-hop banger that features Evan’s signature killer keyboard riffs, fat bass drops, funky guitar hooks, strings, horns and bumpin’ beats. Exactly what you would want from a Slynk and FK5 cocktail. To top it off the vocal sample comes from the late great Mustafa Akbar and imbues the song with his grown & sexy vintage tones! In Slynk’s own words; “It’s funky fresh glitch-hop basslines are guaranteed to create a magnitude 7 earthquake in your glutes and upper thigh area - or your money back!”

Keep the Funk Real is the third installment of the DC to BC series, following on the heels of last months soul funk single, Playin' with Fire featuring Emily Molloy and the dance-floor banger that started it all, Jinglin Janglin, a collab with K+lab.

This tune is a funk meets glitch-hop banger that is primed to ignite dancefloors and festivals worldwide. Pack your bags, the psychedelic funk ship is about to set sail with the latest collab to hit Fort Knox Recordings.  Fort Knox Five and Lazy Syrup Orchestra are at the helm, so get ready to Start the Ride.

For the last decade Steve Raskin (FK5) and Duncan Smith (Lazy Syrup Orchestra, The Funk Hunters) have spent a lot of time together on the road playing festivals and shows. These two are huge fans of all types of funky music and have influenced one another and remixed each others songs, but never collaborated on an original tune… until now! 

Start the Ride is a mid-tempo trippy g-funk meets hip-hop floor burner that is a perfect blend of the two group's sound that can only be described as “Fort Knox sticky-icky Syrupy drip”. Incorporating chill wave synths and disco elements, Dunks and Raskin brewed the funky backbone of beats, bass and keys for the Syrup vocalists to flow over. 

With his old school hip hop flavor, Thomas Workshop drops some psychedelic wordplay and storytelling on top of the bumping bass, bubbling keys, percolating percussion and west coast syrupy synths. Fans of the FK5 Twitch livestreams will know Mark Woodyard from their epic live looping DJ sets, and Mark's playful vocals slip and slide all over the tune.  

Start the Ride is a guaranteed fun trip! This release is the fourth installment of the DC to BC collaboration series, following the funk meets glitch-hop Keep The Funk Real with Slynk, last summer's soul funk Playin' with Fire featuring Emily Molloy, and the dance-floor banger that started it all, Jinglin' Janglin', with K+lab. The release also includes an extended mix and extended instrumental for the DJs so get on board and Start the Ride.

Building on the momentum of last year's hit single “Don't Go” Fort Knox Five return to the studio to collaborate with bcap, a fresh rhymeslayer from Boston, on the new tune “Give It A Minute.” The sound of this new single reflects FK5's musical sensibilities and exposure to new sounds from touring worldwide.  The result is a catchy, Future Funk, bass-heavy, Go-Go meets Glitch-Hop track that is sure to shake booties around the globe.

After Fort Knox Five remixed “Smoke Machine” by Ursula 1000 featuring bcap on vocals, they were eager to get him in the studio for an original production.  Brian Capobianchi, aka bcap, first vibed with the Fort Knox family while WXGR was lauching ESL Radio a few years ago, in support of Thievery Corporation and their label.  Recorded around the New Year, bcap's party-rocking and thought-provoking lyrics were dropped on top of some raw beats and his bluesy, NOLA-style vocals – in the vein of Dr. John – inspired Fort Knox Five's production.

The Washington, DC infuence can be heard throughout the track, with giant Roto-toms, a steady pulsing beat and a relentless Go-Go percussion workout. As usual, guitars rule the day for Fort Knox Five.  Where other producers might use synthesizers, the group puts the guitar in the spotlight, treating it as a synth throughout.  Rob Myers' funky, rubber band licks provide the melody and the hooks, while the chunky beats and sub-bass propel the song.  With nods to old-school retro-funk and the native Go-Go scene, “Give It A Minute” sets a new standard for the future sound of DC.

The DC Funk Parade picked Future Funk as the 2017 theme and “Give It A Minute” could be the anthem for the event. As bcap says in the track “Still the people keep playin’ my song.” Get ready to hear this infectious, funky-groover at festivals and boomin' out of Jeeps all summer long! Over the past decade there has been a strong connection between Washington DC and British Columbia, Canada. Both places have produced and nurtured some incredibly talented funkateers, many of whom have remixed Fort Knox Five over the years. It has been a dream of ours to collaborate with these artists on original tracks, pushing forward the future sound of funk to start a new era that we have dubbed "DC to BC." This release is the first of these collaborations, and the end result is nothing short of a boogie monster!  

Jinglin’ Janglin’ was written with the funk and glitch hop maestro K+lab, a New Zealander who now calls Vancouver, BC home. His funky keys, electro-basses and catchy clavinets ooze all over this track. With the addition of Rob Myers' Chic-inspired guitars and a super-stabby horn line, this track positively bounces along – a perfect hybrid of the K+Lab and FK5 styles! On top of all that, the tune features vocals from Hip-Hop royalty: Baby Bam of the Jungle Brothers, who has worked alongside De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest going back to the 1980s. His vocals bubble all over the track, telling you to just "funk wit it" and jinglin and janglin the vibes straight to your feet! This tune is a modern funk-meets-glitch hop banger that has been torching dance floors and festivals all summer.  

We are super stoked to launch the DC to BC series with this wicked Captain K+lab collaboration. Back in the heady days of the 1990s, some freelance work took the Fort Knox Five into one of the seedy back alleys of Dupont Circle. This alley had one of Washington, DC’s historic carriage houses, and barely hanging on the wall they spotted a relic from a bygone era, a sign advertising the long shuttered McGuires Audio Shop. The sign came home with FK5 and has been hanging in their studio ever since, a reminder of Washington, DC’s epic music heritage. The name and the sign itself are the inspiration for this new instrumental tune from FK5, a return to the classic simplicity and urban cool of yesteryear. “McGuires Audio Shop” is mood music, and the mood is cool like that.

Get ready to take a head-nodding and toe-tapping stroll as the infectious grooves of “McGuires Audio Shop” takes you on a musical journey. Crisp drum breaks and funky beats are complemented by hard-swinging horns throughout. The Horns contributed by the incredible Stuart Cole of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.
