“Lost for days and nights…” the opening lyric appears to be a precursor to the strange and uncertain times in which we now live. You Can Be is about positivity, potential and most importantly hope. If there’s anything positive that could come from an extended period of isolation, perhaps it’s the chance for us to take a step back from the madness of everyday life and evaluate what matters most. A chance to reflect and think about our potential, and the time & space to work out how that potential might be realised. It’s tough being away from loved ones, cooped up indoors, gazing longingly at the sunshine outside, but think about that first beer post lockdown in the glorious summer sun. Keep the dream alive, and in the meantime let the blissed-out lysergic electro-pop melange of 'You Can Be' act as the soundtrack to your quarantine and beyond! In a departure from the upbeat electro-pop style that fans may be accustomed to, Fortnight in Florida introduce us to their more sensitive side with this downtempo and melancholic ballad, addressing deeply personal themes of loss and mourning. Multi-layered guitars, vocals and percussion build throughout the verses before culminating in a chorus of anthemic proportions. For the first time we hear Andrew trailblaze his way from beats to bars with a deft turn on the glockenspiel, an event so special that an entire recording session was devoted to it at AIR studios London, completely detached from the main recording session at Rockfield.  With both sessions conducted under the watchful eye of engineer and producer Laurence ‘Loz’ Anslow, ‘Breathe’ is the sixth single to be released from Fortnight in Florida’s debut album ‘In-flight Entertainment’.

Fortnight in Florida’s pop sensibilities is on full display in ‘You Know What You’re Doing’. Palm muted guitars and floaty synths are reminiscent of 80’s dream-pop pioneers such as the Cocteau Twins and Hall & Oates. The original four-chord sequence that became the basis of the song was actually written by a dear dear friend of the band Edward Downham in an East-end flat adjoining Victoria Park and it’s just the sort of sound you’d be likely to hear at around 6 pm on a hazy August evening at All Points East. Recorded at Rockfield Studios under the watchful eye of engineer and producer Laurence ‘Loz’ Anslow, ‘You Know What You’re Doing’ is the fifth single to be released from Fortnight in Florida’s debut album ‘In-flight Entertainment’.

The ostensibly upbeat and buoyant feel of Bullet masks a moving and poignant tribute to one of the UK’s most highly esteemed songwriters, Amy Winehouse. The song touches upon her struggles with substance abuse, mental health issues, relationships and finally her passing at the young age of 27. An interesting piece of trivia for FiF fans is that Bullet was almost completely re-written for In-flight Entertainment as the original version was considered too disparate and diffuse for the tight, neat pop sound that the album demanded. The original version still exists online, recorded semi-live at the band's coastal retreat in Folkstone, buried deep in the YouTube algorithms - happy hunting! A sequenced synth line buoys the vocal line at the start of ‘Easier To Lose’, the first single to be taken from Fortnight In Florida’s debut album In-flight Entertainment. Recorded at Rockfield studios under the guidance of engineer and producer Laurence Anslow, Fortnight In Florida pack a raft of diverse contemporary influences, ranging from Holy Ghost! and Massive Attack to Friendly Fires, into their blissed-out lysergic electro pop melange. Immersive, soulful, and subtle but ambitious, ‘Easier To Lose’ sees the group, which started as a purely electronic outfit, coming into their own after the recent incorporation of live elements into their shows and recorded music. As the track progresses, coruscating vocal harmonies and canny percussion enter the fray, swelling to a crescendo before the a singular guitar riff sees it out. ‘Easier To Lose’ is a testament to where Fortnight In Florida are at artistically now, ushering in all the yearning romance and vitality of a summer which can’t come too soon.

‘Fortnight In Florida’ are a London three-piece who consider Toro Y Moi, Holy Ghost! and Hot Chip as some of their biggest influences. Born from a shared love of disco, synth-pop, and an encyclopedic knowledge of Alan Partridge quotes, Fortnight In Florida symbolises the will to escape the daily grind, expressed by their inimitable brand of blissed-out Electronic Pop’. 

After finishing a tour as keys player for Lianne La Havas, the band’s singer/songwriter Simon Middleton met Eamonn Dawe (bass/guitars) on a previous musical venture and ‘Fortnight In Florida' was formed. Shortly after, they were joined on drums by Andrew Gallop. With six singles and a debut EP So Long released in 2016, Fortnight In Florida made the ‘Glastonbury 2016 Emerging Talent’ longlist and the ‘Unsigned Guide's Emerging Acts of 2017’ list having already been featured in their Spotlight blog. Their tracks 'Cameo' and 'It's Alright' both made the 'Fresh On The Net' Fresh Faves, and received radio play on BBC 6 Music and Amazing Radio. 

In 2017 they launched a crowdfunding campaign to help them raise funds to record their debut album In-flight Entertainment at Rockfield in South Wales, UK. Their second single ‘I Can’t Wait Forever’ was released in late 2019. It premiered on GigSlutz and has gained 40,000 streams on Spotify to date.
