Americans Andrew Field-Pickering and Ari Goldman are Beautiful Swimmers, but they are also beautiful music makers, Future Times regulars and party starting DJs. As well as putting out a wholly refreshing album of left of centre house sounds, they have released loopy Rhodes jams on Peoples Potential Unlimited and jazz, funk and soul drenched cassette mixes for The Trilogy Tapes all in the last year or so. As such, they are proven to be a dynamic duo from DC that marry retro-futuristic hypnotism with string laced and stoner beats and horn fuelled dance that is playful, charismatic and genuinely idiosyncratic. 

The podcast they have put together is just the same: restless and relentless in style, it is full of quick, raw mixes, booty shaking bass jams, dusty house romanticism, slick electro and plenty of oddities in between. One of the most alive and instinctive mixes we have had so far, it packs plenty in over the course of a non stop hour and is a perfect showcase of this amiable pair’s laid back yet well informed approach to dance music. 

Dekmantel Podcast 045 - Beautiful Swimmers

Some producers manage to make many different styles of music that tie together through a shared sense of mood. Suzanne Kraft is one of those. Actually a man named Diego Herrera from Los Angeles, Kraft has excelled at ambient, slow motion house and Balearic drones in recent times. Releasing on Rush Hour, Gerd Jansen’s Running Back and the excellent Melody as Truth, there have also been dalliances with disco and deep house across a number of EPs and two full lengths. As able to layer up proper synth ballads as he is programme loveably lazy drums, Kraft’s mix for us excels at both. 

It is subtly propulsive mix that starts sun kissed and horizontal and slowly arouses your senses. Colourful disco, watery synth tracks, groove driven house and the odd Chicago classic all fly by over the course of sixty minutes, and with that we have a perfect peak into the shiny musical world of this real sonic craftsman.

Firstly, thanks for inaugurating our podcast series, we know online mixes from you are few and far between so we appreciate you taking the time out for this.

Where and how was the mix recorded?

In my studio in Berlin on 2xCDJ 2000nxs and an Allen and Heath Xone 92. (MH)

How do you prepare for your DJ sets and is this mix a good representation of how you sound in the club?

Record store digging, file hunting, promo checking, and choosing which of my productions in development are ready for a road test develops the pool for on the fly selection. I wanted to reflect some of the slightly tougher stuff which works well in some of the bigger rooms I’ve been playing more recently, whilst obviously keeping a bit of funk/soul influence in there. So I’d say it’s definitely representative of what I’ve been playing out of late.

Following the release of your debut album 'Social Housing' you've played Heidegluhen, Panorama Bar, fabric, Sub Club, Weather festival & Le Sucre to name a few, which out of those stands as a personal highlight and why?

I’d say as much as all those places you mention have been great, the absolute standouts for me were Dour festival in Belgium, which was very intense, and very impressive, in regard to audience response for such a big crowd. Heideglühen and Panorama bar are as ever my Berlin party stalwarts, with Heideglühen being a particularly special, given it’s lesser known status. Opening fabric room 1 was definitely the best set I ever played there, at least in my own opinion, and really really enjoyed gigs in Paisley and Trondheim. Sometimes the small outposts where the audience is really hungry for touring artists with good music are the best experiences. (MH)

What's on the horizon for Marquis Hawkes/Hawkes & Blake/Juxta Position in 2017?
As you know, we have the new record from me on Aus in the coming weeks, tentative steps towards starting work on the next album, and a few remixes I’ve done due to drop soon. Hawkes and Blake just happens when me & Tim are in the studio and we just hit the right vibe, I really hope we hit on something soon, but we never know when the magic is going to appear, and we won’t put anything out we don’t think is absolutely exceptional, so it could be a while. But you never know, sometimes it just comes in a flash! I have a LOT coming up with Juxta Position, we kickstart the new label I’ve formed for releasing Juxta Position material in the next weeks. The label is called Failsafe, and the first record comes at the end of January. The second release is already finalised and ready to go into production also, on top of which I have a rather large caché of Juxta Position tracks which I’m still deciding what to do with, whether to release myself, or find other outlets. We’ll see soon enough, either way, 2017 is already shaping up to be a very exciting year for my different projects. (MH)

Floyd Campbell - VISIONS2

Jordan has been DJing for a long time. More than half his lifetime, in fact. While most of us were studying for our high school exams, Jordan was zipping across Ireland with a roped-in mate, playing all manner of rowdy clubs, often lacking the ID requirements that would typically get him bounced from the door. What’s more, he wasn’t a national sensation with a hit single, he just fucking loved it. Eventually, Jordan walked a Radio 1 competition that saw him play in front of a home crowd of 10000 people in his home city of Belfast. He was sixteen years old.

While this may sound like the beginning of a particularly salacious Netflix documentary, we don’t need to ask “But where’s Jordan now?”, because he’s here, delivering the latest edition in the #PHANTASYMIX series. Between now and then, he’s maintained face as one of the most skilled DJs in Belfast, a city that thanks to it’s dedicated crowd and AVA Festival, has developed a burgeoning reputation as a hotbed of electronic music. Jordan helped build that foundation, co-running The Night Institute party for many years, hosting international names and then wisely scaling things back to a wide-ranging rave based on the skills of himself and fellow DJ Timmy Stewart.

More recently, Jordan has been dancing down multiple avenues. As well as traversing Europe as a DJ, his Nocturne edits series have become some of the most sought-after slabs of wax in the market, beloved by Gerd Janson, Kornel Kovacs and our own Erol Alkan. His halcyon solo productions on Belters and Loose Fit have a luminescent, timeless quality that recalls Orbital or The Chemical Brothers alongside his constantly refreshed record collection from a bubbling underground. And now he’s here for the #PHANTASYMIX. Alongside the music, he spoke to John Thorp about those wild early days, the perfect edit, the Belfast music scene and the potential effects of the recent pandemic.

#PHANTASYMIX 24: Jordan

A move from her birthplace of Kiev to Chicago, where she grew up, gave DJ and producer Alinka her first taste of house music. Getting her early education from radio shows like Sonic Boom and tracks from local heroes like Cajmere and DJ Funk, she soon became completely engrossed in the dance music scene, leading her to start DJing herself and begin taking on odd jobs at local parties in the city. 

In 2001 she was invited by Justin Long to be a resident at his .Dotbleep party at the legendary Smartbar, where she went on to hold a residency for a decade. Her movements in production came after following a chance meeting with Hercules vs Love Affair vocalist Shaun J. Wright, now her best friend, which led to the pair launching their record label and party Twirl. This would become a home for a lengthy string of collaborative releases, as well as several records via the likes of Crosstown Rebels and Classic. 

Earlier this year, from her now homebase of Berlin, Alinka launched a new label called Fantasy Life with an inaugural EP of infectious house cuts; a solid pre-cursor for what's to come next on the imprint. 

We got her on board for this week's Wednesday Alternative mix, and trust us, you're in good hands...
