Fort Romeau continues to roll out thoughtfully detailed productions for Ghostly in 2013. In March, the London-based producer released the Chicago house influenced "SW9" single on Ghostly's sub-label Spectral Sound, and showed his versatile house rhythms in July with its follow-up, the Jetée / Desire single. 2014 will see his debut album for Ghostly — it's his second full-length record, with his debut album Kingdoms being released last year on LA outsider dance institution 100% Silk.

In the meantime, he continues to forge masterful house on this four-track EP, entitled Stay / True. The title track is perhaps the producer's most memorable track yet, a languorous seven-minute slow-burner that moves away from classic house territory in a more experimental direction, cruising along on a leisurely arpeggiated synth figure and a simple but effective kick/clap pattern. The more classically house-influenced "Your Light" is all tight kicks and vocoder-laden vocals, while the "Together" starts with the sound of field recordings and then drops a heavy 4/4 kick and even heavier bassline. The 12" version comes with an exclusive track ("Trust Me"), as does the digital version (the dancefloor-focused house belter "And Now").

An involving italo-classic bassline characterizes Ultraviolet, together with an explosive layering of synthy melodies. These two tracks illuminate feelings of looking at a violet sky, but with different attitudes: the first pushes into the unknown looking for a happy ending, while the second is nostalgic and tender.

Fort Romeau takes you inside the world of the electronic music experimenters.

UK producer Michael Greene has been releasing music under the alias Fort Romeau since 2012 via labels like Ghostly International, Running Back, and Live at Robert Johnson. But we first discovered his prowess on Tim Sweeney’s excellent Beats in Space radio show in November 2014, sharing a double bill with Jackmaster.

We’re still listening to that set, on repeat, three years later, alongside new favourites and his own releases, which is why we’ve wanted to tap him for our VF mix series for some time.

To coincide with Fort Romeau’s new Emulators EP out on Running Back, he’s selected one of his biggest influences – electronic experimenters The Future Sound of London – for VF Mix 106. Listen to the mix and discover why Fort Romeau has chosen FSOL below.

“Brain Dougans and Garry Cobain have released a dizzying amount of music under a plethora of guises, the most well known of which is The Future Sound of London. I’ve been a huge fan of their output for many years and wanted to showcase some of their lesser known tracks in this mix alongside a couple of stone cold classics,” says Greene.

“Navigating their extensive discography is a bit of a task, and can be difficult to get your head around, so I narrowed my focus down to predominantly early singles, before the group hit the big time with ‘Papua New Guinea’, which ironically marked the end of the group’s dance/rave era.”

For people unfamiliar with the group, check out the debut album Accelerator as it epitomises the early FSOL sound, and for my money is the best UK techno LP of the early 90s.”

Fort Romeau returns with his first 12” of 2018 following a string of releases on Live at Robert Johnson, Running Back and Ghostly International as well as appearances on compilations from Cocoon, Rush Hour and Mule Musiq.

On the A side, “Pablo” unfurls with swirling arpeggios which build to a euphoric crescendo, while the more heady “Terracotta” explores polyphonic syncopated FM sequences and ambiguous chord progressions.
