Aharon Amram - Sounds of Yemen (1962​–​1987) LP

Yemenite music in Israel is extremely unique style in the Middle-East and was conceived as a result of the immigration wave of Yemenite Jews s to Israel. The new immigrants brought with them a rich and ancient culture of language and heritage. The music they brought was mostly religious and ceremonial and was divided into either men or women songs, accompanied by drumming on a large olive oil tin can. The key figure of this genre is without a doubt the singer and writer, Aharon Amram, who was Born in Sana’a, Yemen, and immigrated to Israel as a child.

From the dawn of the sixties, and for over four decades, Amram recorded and released dozens of records on his independent record label, “Sounds of Yemen”. A pioneer of his time, Amram combined in his repertoire religious songs (mostly penned by Rabbi Shalom Shabazi) as well as secular songs which he wrote himself. Alongside traditional compositions, Amram experimented with Western electric instruments such as guitar, bass, organ and a drum set, as well as with rock and soul arrangements. This mosaic created a unique sound signature which became the foundation for today’s Middle Eastern “Mizrahi” music, and the presence of this foundation is felt to this very day.

Forever the innovator, upon the arrival of the eighties, Amram updated his sound with extensive use of drum machines and synthesizers, and weaved disco and pop arrangements into his songs, remaining relevant for years.

This double LP captures the finest of Amram’s immense catalog and reflects a variety of styles and artistic periods. Out of Amram’s extensive reel to reel archive, we chose twenty tracks, among them are timeless hits, obscure tracks as well previously unreleased material.

The Yemenite sound, of which Amram is a pioneering spear, is a part of a living culture which thrives to this day. His songs are constantly played in weddings, haflas, and other celebratory events. Amram holds a place of utmost respect within the Yemenite community as well as within Israeli culture in general. His songs were covered countless times and will excite new listeners for generations to come.

Midnight Ravers, de retour avec un deuxième album, annonce la couleur et affirme une double identité (Mali - France). Une rencontre vécue, nécessaire, qui libère la mondialisation de ses carcans économiques pour l’ancrer dans la réalité, celle de l’humain et de l’échange.

L’autre nécessité est artistique. Éprouver l’altérité pour se débarrasser de l’entre-soi, s’échapper de son milieu social et culturel, créer une instabilité propice à la recherche et à la création.

C’est cette démarche sincère d’ouverture à l’autre qui a fait (re)naître Midnight Ravers comme un nouveau combo éléctro-mandingue, trois maliens et trois français investits dans un projet complet et protéiforme : musique, dessin et vidéo . Une sensibilité qui transpire par tous les pores de la musique créée, émotionnellement intense.

Ici, les envolées du monstre sacré de la kora Madou «Sidiki» Diabaté et la finesse des ambiances électroniques servent les mélopées belles et tristes de l’incroyable chanteuse Fatim Kouyaté. Là, MC Waraba et Méléké Tchatcho - les MC’s les plus en vue de Bamako – donnent aux productions de Dom Peter (High Tone) des allures de transe festive, si loin des canons actuels du rap US et de ses déclinaisons trap au kilomètre.

Pas de «  coloration world  » ou de «  samples ethniques  » plaqués ici, mais un vrai groupe métisse avec la musique comme dialogue.

The Comet Is Coming are our guests in Hour 2 and to celebrate the release of their debut album Channel The Spirits on The Leaf Label, King Shabaka, aka Shabaka Hutchings (also of Sons Of Kemet and Melt Yourself Down) drops his first mixtape with a quality selection of music personal to him. He had this to say about his mix;

"I've never done a mixtape before so when asked to do this I immediately though back to my favourite DJs and what their selections did for me. I love it when I hear massive leaps in genre during a set which seem to make sense despite all the odds and retain a trajectory of intensity. Immediately I think of Gaslamp Killer who I toured with last year and was able to see him do his thing up close, and Ntone Edjabe who is a DJ extraordinaire based in Cape Town. These are all tunes that have meant a lot to me at various points in my life so it's interesting for me to see the narrative which connects them."
