Written as a three part story narrating the dissolution of a relationship, "Bad Timing" is the first proper single from Montreal-based musician and performer, @mindbath. The track was originally composed acoustically, but after being sent to friend and frequent collaborator Project Pablo, it returned as a pared back electronic hymn. A fourth verse was then added, vocally referencing Lauryn Hill's timeless break-up jam, "Ex-Factor." The single's b-side, Bedroom Dub, was created on the fly, "in about 30 minutes and recorded off my looping pedal in one live take," explained Mind Bath. 

2016 will also see Mind Bath release an EP along with more music by his other project, Cafe Lanai, whose Paradise EP hit a number of 2015 year-end lists.

‘Dirty Hercules’ is the fierce new single from Sydney based future-folk/soul artist Ngaiire (pron. Nighree). The lead offering from her highly anticipated debut album Lamentations (due out June 2013) — an album partly written in an obscure little drinking bar in the suburban outskirts of Tokyo, Japan — ‘Dirty Hercules’ is a commanding entry into the music world; Ngaiire’s peculiar vocal arrangements and rare sense of soul, reminiscent of vocal greats gone by, setting her well apart from other singers. 

The song speaks of the vast aberrations of the darkness, the sex, the lies, the money, the drugs that detract from the reality of our own core conditions. It sheds light on the towering ugliness of our ailing covetous nature, the misinterpretations of strength and the journey of acceptance that no two people can have the same story. 

Featuring friend and future-soul darling ‘Nai Palm’ of Melbourne band Hiatus Kaiyote, ‘Dirty Hercules’ sees Nai add an additional depth that charters bottomless profundities exclusively championed by Questlove, Erykah Badu and Gilles Peterson. Nai’s husky vocals lay further assault to the hard-hitting dub step-esque bridge before rolling into a harmony-thick outro — a Ngaiire trademark and one that constantly challenged even a 48 channel Pro-Tool session come mixing time. 

Co-produced by Ngaiire, Sydney bassist Tim Curnick and Japan based beat maker and pianist, Aaron Choulai, ‘Dirty Hercules’ exemplifies what is to be expected from Lamentations. Showcasing Ngaiire’s great attention to vocal detail and layering as well as her love for musical aesthetics, and Aaron’s distinctive, Japanese-influenced electronic glitch and piano work, Tim’s pop sensibilities and production mastery are at the fore as Curnick balances perfectly the live and electronic components of Ngaiire’s music. Together the three along with Ngaiire’s drummer Ross Ferraro tracked ‘Dirty Hercules’ in Tim’s parent’s beach house in Jervis Bay, mixing it (and the rest of the album) in a Tasmanian mountain studio shack with mixing virtuoso Chris Townend (Portishead, Silverchair, Violent Femmes). 

Standing on the triple j’s 2010 Next Crop list alongside Kimbra, Lanie Lane, and The Jezabels, Ngaiire was born in one of the last great frontiers of the world, Papua New Guinea, migrating to Australia at just 16. Since then she has been building a reputation for herself as one of the country’s most recognisable and dynamic vocalists and performers combined with her love for uniquely flamboyant stage attire. 

Moving to Sydney after a brief stint studying for a Jazz degree at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Ngaiire embarked on a long period of touring overseas and in Australia with roots collective Blue King Brown, mentor and electronic maestro Paul Mac and gypsy jazz outfit Monsieur Camembert lead by ostentatious front man and Camelot venue owner Yaron Hallis. 

Years later the need to focus on her own pursuits caused Ngaiire to quit the road and settle back in Sydney where she could discover and build herself as an artist. Journeying from folk soul to jazz hop to indie pop to everything in between, Ngaiire has finally settled on an eclectic sonic identity that is uniquely hers and one that can easily transcend universal territories with its electronic soul elements as well as gratify the folk sphere with her great adoration for storytelling and heartfelt laments. 

‘Dirty Hercules’ steps forth from an album bookended by challenges, from Ngaiire’s car accident a day before recording started to the death of her sister upon the album’s completion: it stakes a flag in the ground as Ngaiire’s official arrival.

Ngaiire - Dirty Hercules (feat. Nai Palm)

After a massive summer playing packed out stages at Woodford, Earth Freq, Folk Rhythm & Life Festival and more, Bobby Alu is proud to release the first single – ‘You Know’ – from upcoming second album Take It Slow. Given that his eponymous debut album [2010] has just peaked at#2 in the iTunes Australia World Music charts, it’s definitely safe to say Take It Slow is keenly anticipated among Bobby Alu converts. 

For now, ‘You Know’ will prove a well-received salve, something Woodford Folk Festival punters are well aware of. Following Bobby Alu’s blistering performances at the beloved festival over the summer break organisers were quick to send a press release praising the “contagious performance by Bobby Alu who had the whole crowd out of their seats and dancing to his reggae rhythms and awe-inspiring percussion solos…” Similarly, Brisbane’s Scene Magazine bestowed their own gong: “The Unexpected Success award has to go to Bobby Alu. With people crammed into the tent and dancing out into the festival streets at each of his three sets, Bobby brought the percussive beats that Woodfordians crave.”

During a quieter period, new single ‘You Know’ was written during a period of reconnection for Bobby: reconnection with his heritage in beautiful Samoa, birthplace of his mother. Feeling “sentimental and grateful” and inspired by aspects of the culture he both loved and hated Bobby was moved to get a tattoo in traditional style as a marker of his time on the island; an experience that, strangely enough, doubles as a metaphor for ‘You Know’.
Although a playful, upbeat soul pop tune, ‘You Know’ is a serious reminder for Bobby about accepting truth and not avoiding it no matter the discomfort. Bobby and his band worked on the song together during downtime in Melbourne but as soon as it was roadtested on crowds up and down the East coast the bounce-heavy, beautifully-harmonised, popcorn-guitared track got a resounding thumbs up. 

Following Bobby Alu’s debut album in 2010, which quickly made the shortlist for triple j’s Roots N All’s ‘Top 10 albums of 2010’, his trajectory was swift, evidenced by the fact that Bobby Alu’s third ever gig was a by-invitation appearance alongside BB King and Bob Dylan at the 2011 Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival. His most recent appearance [one of many] at Woodford Folk Festival rounded out a massive couple of years, festival-wise, that has seen him play Reggaetown Festival, Village Festival, Eclipse Festival, Wide Open Space in the Northern Territory, Folk Rhythm & Life Festival, the Australasian World Music Expo, Nannup Festival, Island Vibe and Deep Roots. 

2010 was seriously the beginning of a prolific time as the grass roots word spread. Bobby Alu recorded a live video for single ‘One to Wait’, which won a Q Music song award and was a semi-finalist in the international song writing competition. ‘Love You More’, his latest video single offering received nominations in multiple categories of the Q Music Song Awards. It’s little wonder Bobby Alu won placement in the prestigious John Butler Seed Management Workshop and was invited on tour in support of artists like The Beautiful Girls, Katchafire, Watussi and Blue King Brown. 

But that’s not to say that Bobby Alu is an overnight sensation; Bobby’s alter ego Charles Wall has long been a highly-respected, sought-after musician for his incredible skills on the drumkit, his soulful voice and gifted songwriting. When Bobby Alu is taking time out from the spotlight, Charles Wall is touring the world as drummer and vocalist for renowned Australian progressive roots/dance trio OKA, and as a regular co-conspirator with the likes of Nicky Bomba, Kooii, Mista Savona, Saritah, Golden Sound, Cheap Fakes and many more.

Given that Bobby Alu shows create a contagious atmosphere spurred on by a therapeutic dose of reggae rhythms and roots with a distinctive Pacific influence, world beats, ukulele and awe-inspiring log drumming and percussion solos with influence from a fusion of Bob Marley, Ben Harper, Bill Withers, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Finley Quay it’s going to be one smokin’ tour.
